Lighting VFX Completely Changed my Game!
What's up, Gamers?
Following Mengo's advice, I created some really sick lighting vfx I can use for my indie game - and I think they turned out awesome! Hope you enjoy the lights and lighting effects I added, and maybe it'll be helpful for your own development as well!
The game that I'm developing as an indie game dev is called Isadora's Edge! A 2D Pixel Art platformer game, that I'm developing in the Godot Game Engine! If you're new to Godot or have any questions about Godot or game dev in general, feel free to ask me!

I made a BIG mistake with my indie game
Просмотров 16 тыс.14 дней назад
What's up, Gamers? I really messed up pretty bad with the first pass on my enemy AI system, it legit barely works for what I needed. But that's okay, this video explains how I managed to salvage an otherwise pretty terrible situation! The game that I'm developing as an indie game dev is called Isadora's Edge! A 2D Pixel Art platformer game, that I'm developing in the Godot Game Engine! If you'r...

    Any beginner tutorials for making a 2D platformer that you would recommend? Aside from that, I’d like to see how you can create temporary platforms like an enemy throwing a spear and sticking to a wall for a short time.

    The one thing I have always wondered is simple. When making a character that can fly, or an ability that can allow a character to fly temporarily, how do you easily switch between the animations without it jumping wildly between them. Loving the series so keep it up 😊

    In unity, you can check for collision with your groundet trigger and then check for the tag of the colliding game object (or that's how i do it at least) Edit: You can just give the floor different physics properties. No code required

    @inboundshovel how would you tackle players that circumnavigate this by just jumping and using the mobility of jumping/moving in the air to skip different flooring?

    • @InboundShovel
      @InboundShovel 5 часов назад

      Great question! I think there are a couple techniques. One, you can disable jumping on those floor types, but that's the least fun option, so I generally dislike it. Second, is you totally allow for jumping to avoid issues, but you have secondary challenges that pressure the player into holding their jump. Jumping around is a lot less safe when you need to hold your jump for a timely dodge! Third, you can alter the jump based on the flooring. With low acceleration, you could make the jump have a little wind-up before they can perform it - or force the player to reach a certain speed before they can jump - or any other "physics-based" interaction that can limit the jump! It's all about playing with different options until you find something that works! :)

    I would use a different animation for the sticky floor, like “my boots are really heavy” walk. It looks more like there is a lot of wind

    • @InboundShovel
      @InboundShovel 5 часов назад

      You have a great eye for detail! This /is/ actually her "heavy wind" walking animation, I just re-used it for the sticky floor for demonstration purposes! If I actually end up using the sticky floors I made here, I would either change the animation slightly, or potentially put some kind of "stink" particles effects so it looks like she's covering her face!

    I tried to see if i can make below 0 friction on a floor in unity but it didnt let me so idk how to do it xD.. im just learning unity as i go and its going rlly slow. btw i like the look of your game and player character and attacks

    • @dieseldan2562
      @dieseldan2562 Час назад

      Below 0 friction would essentially cause the player to continue accelerating in the direction of their current velocity (as opposed to opposite it like normal). So, imagine if when you stopped walking you not only continued moving forward, but also keep getting faster too. This is generally not what you want, which is probably why Unity doesn't allow it.

    • @dieseldan2562
      @dieseldan2562 Час назад

      Depends on exactly what you mean by that. I'm going to assume you mean when the player falls on it they automatically are bounced up (minecraft slime block style). One way to do that would be first detecting what block the player is standing on. If the player is standing on a bouncy block, then set their y-velocity to -1 * velocity. This will essentially redirect all of their velocity back upward. If you want this bounciness to decay over time, multiply y-velocity by a damping factor between 1 and 0. So y-velocity *= -damping_factor.

    This is great to make special levels too, like a fun level where your speed is faster the whole time, either only on the ground/air or all the time, and/or a challenging level by making associated time limit(s)
