    You were only talking about the concern avout climate change, while that is by far the smallest offender of plastik. Plastic's biggest problem is the poisoning it does to us, both by the chemicals it gives off to the food it directly touches and even more so by the plastic that lands in the oceans from where it returns to us inside the packaged fish we buy. It's not about the emmissions, it' s about the direct negative effect of plastic simply flying around everywhere. Or did I miss that point in your video?

    What concerns me most about plastic is its impact on ocean and waterway health. It also breaks down (and down, and down, and down) until it gets stuck in our blood (and men's balls and semen), potentially causing who knows what health consequences. Environmentalism is hard because it's multifaceted. It depends on societal norms, as well as economic and political policy. It's a constant trade-off between convenience, what's available, the biodegradability of materials and CO2 emissions. It's hard. I've dedicated myself to only buying second-hand fabrics with plastic in them, but I don't even know if that makes a difference. And now we have the existential nightmare of AI. Not only is it terrifying to artists, but its environmental impact is a nightmare.

      amazing comment and i wholeheartedly agree that this environmental issue in particular is so difficult and multifaceted. this video isn't to say that plastic is good [it's not]! rather, completely forgoing plastic in a society powered by fossil fuels creates an ecological tradeoff that the zero waste movement doesn't like to talk about. p.s. did you listen to the recent clotheshorse podcast about AI?? omggg

    I feel that reducing plastic is less about climate change because that's what buying less and reusing more is about. The plastic portion is about minimizing how much bigger you're making landfills which helps the 3rd world countries the US sends trash to and the environments surrounding landfills.

    What about the ingestion of micro plastics...........pretty sure glass won't leach endocrine disruptors. This complicates the discussion regarding saving food in plastic as it sheds onto the food its wrapped in. I haven't found a way to always avoid this yet either but I don't believe plastic is a better option until we require confirmation that all chemicals leached are proven to be safe for the ecosystem as whole; plants and animals. PFAS.........for example. I do very much appreciate the importance of critical thinking if our beliefs of something are true or if we are living in an echo chamber.

    Plastic brakes down and gets inside the body. It's been found in the brains, and heart of people, and even placentas of women. Only 10% of the 8 billion tuns of plastic that has been made gets recycled. It all ends up on somebody's front lawn on one of the islands in Asia. People live with plastic in there rivers and on there land, but we don't see it so we think it's fine. I think those scientists you talked about don't know their stuff, plastic is toxic and animals eat it and die, but I guess that's okay by your scientists. We're losing wildlife because of plastic. Just because you can't think of a better alternative, doesn't mean plastic is ok

    I literally watched this while folding plastic bags to reuse because we still have to use them to dispose of trash where I live in. Having a more sustainable lifestyle is not at all about being perfect but about reducing impact in habits that matter like what you mentioned on the video (more sustainable transport, reducing meat consumption, etc!) and basically just doing your best

  • @kanishkamishra1863
    @kanishkamishra1863 Месяц назад

    I think the amount of energy used to create an environmentally friendly, reusable product ≠ the energy created to produce more single use plastic products because it's not the question of how much energy is getting used but the amount of trash that is being created. For example, I live in a third world country and was once travelling to a different state by public bus. What I saw on barren lands was HORRIFYING. Huge mountains of trash piled up together waiting to get burned and create unimaginable amounts of pollution, and the sad part is that it wasn't even our waste. There were bags from Walmart, Target, Cheetos, etc. Things that do not even exist in my country. This trash gets shipped to third world countries, uses a lot of space, contributes to land pollution, and the worst part is that burning of all this waste causes our nearby cities to become the most polluted cities in the world, where thousands of people die every single year because of breathing problems. So, getting rid of single use plastic should be everyone's top priority because it's literally costing us death of street animal lives who are eating that plastic, as well as human lives who are dying from air pollution.

      i agree with everything you said but instead of putting it solely on consumers to change their buying habits [which isn't feasible on a broad scale without extreme government intervention], this could be solved with better waste management on the part of the u.s., canada, etc. we should not be dumping our trash on you, it's beyond unconscionable 💔

    There is a similar analysis that shows that riding an electric bike releases less greenhouse gas than a traditional fully human powered bike especially if the rider is a carnivore or an omnivore (like me). For a vegan it is close to equal but slightly in favor of the electric bike. The problem with these studies though is that they do not show whole story. In reality if you imaging that many people who ride any bike will be doing more exercise just to exercise then you can say that their is no real extra calories for riding the bike because they are just borrowing those calories from their regular workout. All that said, both modes of transportation is far better than a car. Now to your video, very valuable to do the research, but I will say that for a zero waster that is very dedicated to minimizing all forms of consumerism their slight increase CO2 for using glass and tote bags would be more than made up for by perhaps their other non purchases. If that lifestyle leads you to not always go out and buy the latest gadget then the whole lifestyle still puts them ahead of the average American. For the record I am not a zero waster, I am an environmentalist, and I do try to waste as little as I possibly can while still enjoying life. My biggest lifestyle changes for this is that I mostly do not drive, I live in a tiny place, and I try to practice the environmentalist form of minimalism. In other words minimalism for reasons of less use rather than for reasons of aesthetics.

  • @RaphaelaEdelbauer
    @RaphaelaEdelbauer Месяц назад

    I think with all due respect that you are wrong here. Firstly because nobody replaces ONE plastic bag with a tote but the habit of using one bag per shopping tour with a bag. If you use a tote instead of lets say five plastic bags over the span of a year, you will only need to use said tote 34 times. Secondly, the calculation doesn't take into account the decomposition time, the fact that an accumulation of cotton, even if aequivalent in energy production, is not as big if a problem as an accumulation of plastic. The same goes for washing a bees wax cloth - I guess producing one plastic fork and washing a metal one. Would you therefore suggest only using plastic plates because you don't need to wash them? Fact is, that we are talking about a finite resource you need to produce them whereas warm water is in theory endless and we don't confront future generations with our waste. Energy cost are but one factor in a very complex equation and one that could in therory be solved in a renewable fashion.

    I believe most people can multitask and handle getting rid of plastic at the same time they make use of glassed jars etc. I am reusing glass jars that my great grandmother used in her kitchen. Plastic is a product of the oil industry and will stay around because it is all about money, health be damned.

    I used to live in Eugene, Oregon and there is a tofu manufacturer there called Surata tofu. On Tuesdays, you could go to the building a buy the tofu ends and pieces and you could bring your own containers. Every city doesn’t have a tofu maker, but many do. You can do a tiny bit of searching and find items and be sustainable at the same time.

    I think you're supposed to try and grow your own instead of cutting them out of your diet. If you live in an apartment, you can try container growing. This cuts down on your fuel use and the fuel it takes to get produce to the store. If you still can't do that yourself, try to find someone local growing or a farmers market. If all that fails, try to buy produce in season. If plastic is unavoidable, just make sure to try to reuse it as much as possible to keep it out of the landfill. A good way to sequester plastic is to use it as form filler in sculptures. To me, it's just about being more mindful.

    From a co2e perspective, yes. But sustainability is also about waste production and on you waste reduction point, you compared it with co2e. Vinegar cleaning spray is not sticky unless of course you mix it with honey or sugar. Vinegar is astringent and leaves no stickiness behind. I have to wonder about the quality of the information on this channel. There's a lot to be said about being a contrarian with a movement such as zer waste as far as RUclips goes and likes and views and finding your niche to be able to make money off of your RUclips. my guess is that is what this channel is about because the information she's giving is not correct in many aspects. I do believe we should question what we do as environmentalists to make sure we're being most effective But most of her arguments are very weak And should be able to be seen Through easily.

Reuse that plastic soap dispenser if you can't get a glass one, don't throw out your stuff and replace it with eco-friendly stuff when you've got plenty of life left in the stuff you already have. Little things add up big. ETA: 17 reusable bags. We don't always get to the store, but when we do, we need to stock up on groceries, so they get filled. My cotton totes are used like a handbag tbh.

    I think plastic is an amazing material, and has been essential for massive advancements in (especially) medical care. I also feel it’s being abused and taken for granted. If plastic serves a purpose I have no issue with it. I feel like a lot of eco movements that exclusively target individuals are just a smoke screen to shirk the blame and guilt onto individual people and to disguise evil company actions that pollute and destroy. None of us are super hero’s, we all have the ability for real actionable change.

    I must admit that we should all take lessons and keep ourselves educated and still learning throughout our lives, but personally I didn’t go for plastic-free because of environmental issues at all, but for my personal health issue. I still avoid plastic as much as possible especially towards food because I don’t want to process micro-plastic and I don’t want to accidentally inhale plastic fumes in case of fire in my house. I try be or tend to be as much as i can a zero waster too, but as a lazy realistic person, sometimes I go to the fastest option too. The more I go old the more I have learned that living a perfect life isn’t reachable but trying to do small changes here and there and maintain those habits is the best that one’s could do. I am an imperfect millennial but I try my best to do my part. Hope that you would be kind enough towards yourselves too because life is too short to live in constant fear and remorse. Have some mercy on yourselves and be happy even if you’re not the best person in the world. Have some gratitude for your belongings and for your best memories, treasure them as much as you can, show some appreciation to your loved ones, and don’t take them for granted. Kisses everyone.

    I don't agree with your views on not driving out of the way to a more sustainable store because though it is more sustainable for you to do in the short term, the thing is that in the long term we need more stores that practice more sustainability and if we continue to go to conventional stores rather than support the stores that are trying to fix the problem and be more sustainable, we are showing with our dollars that we will accept things as they are now. Companies don't change unless it is no longer financially beneficial to continue things the way they are. When you support a sustainable store, you are supporting the cause and the more people in the movement who do it, the less money these big corporations make and once it starts hurting their wallets enough, they will make the change to do what will bring back their customer base.

One of our biggest concerns is over consumerism of everything and you are only looking at small parts of using less plastic, look at the third world countries that send women and children onto the massive dumps that we create to sort our mess, no glass here, and then look at the damage to our bodies from micro particles from plastic, the animals killed, the oceans polluted. I could go on but won’t.

    Thank you for sharing. I would like to give a feedback. Maybe it will be valid for you, maybe it won't be. I would like to suggest you to add a comment to the links in the 'sources' section. Because it made it really hard to check what you were saying and it was not nice :(

    I appreciate the video! and had heard a lot of these points before, at the same time I don’t really like the first point “plastic won’t reduce your co2 impact”, I don’t get why people would be avoiding plastic for the CO2 impact in the first place? For me the reasons to reduce plastic use really come down reducing your microplastic exposure and reducing the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills, water ways and the oceans (and the fact that recycling plastic in the US is essentially a myth, the vast majority of “recycled plastic” ends up in a landfill or in the environment). However I do agree with the point on glass waste, if you’re not using a product that uses 100% recycled glass, it’s basically just going to get downcycled into cheaper grade glass and not reused

      thanks so much 😊 to your first point -- there's a common misconception in the sustainability movement that because plastic is made from fossil fuels, it has a heavier carbon burden than alternative materials and therefore makes global heating worse, so this is what i was speaking to!

    Hard to trust anything on yt - there is no requirement to disclose one's corporate interests. This one smells of refinery.

      i guess i can understand how nuance might be mistaken for corporate propaganda when so many sustainability creators just go off vibes when researching their content 🙂
