Hello , we are Michael and Julia . Recently, we purchased a 25 foot Ranger Tug. We plan to travel across North America photographing and filming the natural world. Michael is a professional wildlife photographer, guide and has been a licensed captain for the past 30 years. He usually chooses the road less traveled. Julia is a retired teacher, super-mom and artist. Some of our adventures will be on land, and some on the water. Come along with us. We hope you enjoy the ride. New video out every second Friday at 4:00 pm EST . ( Unless we are on the road , or fishing , or working in the field....then it may be once a month- honestly , keep checking .... )

Very informative. Thanks for showing how you live on that beautiful boat!
You two are living the dream 👏 How do you get your boat from Florida to Ontario ?
he's fishing even when he isn't fishing! 🤣🤣🤣
hi i am peter 62 years old from europe and i must say i like you guys very much , if i was living there i buy me a 25ft tug like yours and you gone be my friends for sure because all the things you are doing that is me also.....🙂 greetings
Very cool, thanks ya'll!
Does your boat have heat or AC?
I have been enjoying your videos of Georgian Bay area. All I can think is how great a boat like that would be for travelling the Trent-Severn and Rideau waterways. Have you been up the Severn at all? I think you’d enjoy the section from Port Severn to Lake Couchiching anyway. That’s an area I know well, by 15’ fishing boat anyway. 😉
Beautiful little anchorage 👍👍🇺🇲
Love your style of video talking and casual talk!Great videos 🎉
Carol , thank you for the kind words and for taking time to comment . We always appreciate that.
Quick question, you mentioned running a generator. Are you, then, running a portable generator to charge house batteries? Thanks for sharing - currently looking into a Jeanneau 795.
oops, a little impatient. saw your comment about it. thanks again 🙂
Glad you found an answer to your question. All the best to you .l
You are great. Want to the do the Loop when I retire in a few years. Looking to see if wife and I could survive on a smaller boat that doesn't need a lot of work or larger than needs some. Break downs suck! We've pretty much been apart for last 2 years because her mom is needing 24/7 supervision . We get occasional weekend, a vacation or two and try to lunch every Friday. She'll be home for 4 days this Labor Day weekend. Living together for a year on a small boat might not be the best idea
John , this is Julia ...I know what you are going through. Michael experienced something like this when my parents were aging. It is a difficult time , but your wife sounds like a wonderful person. These chapters can be as hard on the individual as they are on the couple . We have no problem living on the boat full time for 3 months but after that we feel a break is good so that we each can have more space and connect with other friends and family. Wishing you both all the best.
No need to run ethanol free if you run the boat regularly.
@@cowlumbus that’s all we use
Which blueberry mix etc do you use. Just milk?
Martha White Blueberry cheesecake muffin mix . Betty Crocker also has a just add milk or water mix. Great for the boat with limited supplies.
@@expeditionseanest thank you!
This was so helpful showing extra storage ideas. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Loved the video !
Thank you!And thanks for taking time to post such a sweet comment!
Lovely tour and channel. Just subscribed. Last month we were up in Southampton on Lake Huron, which is beautiful, then we drove up to Tobermory Ontario what a beautiful place
Sounds like a wonderful trip. Thanks for subscribing and leaving such a nice comment.
Great video, I’ve never seen that part of the country. Do the shoals and reefs show up on the maps/nav?
Jay, many of them do but they are not exactly located as shown on the charts. If you can stay in the main routes and not get distracted by the beautiful views , you should not have a problem. Unfortunately Michael can sometimes be like a dog chasing a squirrel , and he loves to explore places where other people do not go.
First time I have ever commented on a You Tube Channel-:) Yes - excellent content and videos! Two quick questions: 1.) Do you still love your Ranger 25 - is the quality top notch? ( we are in the process of seriously looking to purchase one ) 2.) What do you call / how can I get that spool system you have for your stern anchor. Thank-you! Peter
I think the build quality is good. Most of the components are good as well. All of our raptor decking feel off, and there was a few gelcoat issues, but all is good now. The structure portion of the boat is very good and would buy another tomorrow.
Such an awesome channel! Great editing and pacing. So interesting and informative. I'm a couple of years from retirement and wanting to explore the Great Lakes and maybe the Great Loop at some point. The Ranger Tug has definitely gotten my attention as a possible platform. Cheers!
We have been very happy with our boat. And would highly recommend them.
How deep is the channel?
If you stay in the middle of the channel the depths are plenty good for any cruiser. But if you veer off too much grounding could happen. Some spots are narrow. You would love it there.
Where did you find the reel for your stern tie line? Does the reel mount to a bracket that goes into a pole holder hole?
We bought it online years ago and can't remember. Sorry
Fabulous video! ❤️ You are right. The scenery along your route was absolutely beautiful. The area around the sportsman lodge looked really cool with a beautiful marina. 😎😎 I spotted another Ranger Tug there with what appears to be a Washington registration number? Did you meet up with owners?
Yes we did. A very sweet couple that decided to spend the summer on Georgian Bay. I asked them if doing the loop and they said no.
❤
Thank you for taking us along on your journey. I love Georgian Bay! I worked at a summer camp as the Tripping Director and I chuckled at Julia’s comment, on her paddling background. I immediately pictured a group of sun-kissed young people in a “raft” of canoes, legs draped over each other’s gunnels, asking, “who has the food pack?” To walk barefoot on the smooth pink Canadian Shield is a sensory connection to the last ice age. It’s so hard to pick a favourite area, so I will choose a few. The white “mountains” of Killarney were life changing to this southern Ontario boy. The islands and shipwrecks around the Massassauga Provincial Park are amazing. And finally the interface between limestone bedrock and exposed Canadian Shield in the waters just off Victoria Harbour are visual reminders of our geological history. (Sorry, earth science nerd.) Thank you for the video.
Great video. You can get a “luxury edition “ Ranger Tugs with down rigger mounts, you just have to ask for the mounts when ordering the boat . We’ve owned R25 and R27 luxury editions outboard boats , both had factory installed down-rigger mounts and wiring.
Good to know. Thanks.
Great banjo melody. Thank you, for sharing. Another beautiful cruise. God bless you two
Thanks Ted, God bless you too.
Great to see a radar.....i was woundering when you will get one 🙂 - I just purchased two Scotty Downrigger for my Parker 760Quest. Can't wait to do some fishing again....
Are you fishing out west? I'm looking forward to more down rigging as well.
Why such a small boat? Those rangers are expensive. You can get a 34+ foot trawler for less then 50k and restore and still be less then that ranger. We just got a 34 mainship we plan on doing the bahamas in only runs about 8 knots but only 2 gph and has onboard genset and water maker. Seems like you could be more comfortable and spend less on fuel... you like going really fast? Plus not flushing that outboard is not the best scenario either.
We wanted a trailerable boat. We spend our winters in the Bahamas then put the boat on the trailer in the keys. 3 days and we are on Georgian bay. Five days puts us on the west coast of British Columbia. No cost for storage, insurance is a fraction of the price and we can run 40 mph if we need to get some where fast. Although we normally cruise at 7 knots. But it's not as comfortable as a bigger boat. We only flush the outboard once a week. Not great. If I keep that up my outboard may only last 6 years. Next year I will replace the thermostats. We run all summer in freshwater.
Great info and great delivery - many thanks! (Have owned two Quigley vans and agree 100% with your review)
Yes, its nice to own something that build to last.
Love your videos and your adventures in the Bahamas. I live in Tampa and also planning to go to the Bahamas for some adventures of my own. How often do you flush your engine and how do manage to do that off grid for an extended period of time?
I only flush my outboard once a week. I don't expect the engine to last more than six years doing that. Although we run the boat in free water all summer so maybe that flushes all the nasty salt out of it. But I thin k corona has already stated. Next year we will replace the thermostats.
Shivery is over! Send your wife to tie off? Seriously 😂 Beautiful place
Julia was a competitive swimmer in college and she doesn't want to run the outboard while the boat is at anchor. So I get the easy job. Whew:)
Shame there’s no fish locker? Where do you store your catch until it’s processed? I don’t even see a good spot to mount a cooler that wouldn’t be in the way? Love the look of the ranger tug but wonder how it fishes. Thx
We have a large cooler bag that can hold fish to 4 feet. But if smaller fish we put them in the cooler on the roof rack. I normally clean fish right away.
Michael really stepped in it this time....
Yup, he is always getting himself in some kind of trouble. :)
Heaven on earth.
Yes a great spot. Too bad in 3 months it will be covered in snow and ice. But I guess that's how it stays special.
I like your version of the poem better.
Interesting to hear the technician regarding fuel... Yamaha states that their outboards will run E10 fuel no problem. Is that not the case? Obviously we all like clean fuel better, but its not always available.
I run boats almost every day for work and have had issues with some internal plastics breaking down because of ethanol. I do use some ethanol fuels but try to purchase ethanol free when I can. But don't loose sleep about it.
Love these videos, just found your channel so I am discovering the historical record lol
Its crazy when there is that slight fog on the horizon and you can't actually see where the ocean and the sky meet. Very cool.
Yes its something special indeed.
Awesome video! Do you also do small engine flushes when in the Bahamas on extended trips? Keep up the great content, I see this channel blowing up!!
Thanks John - never in a million years thought more than our families would actually watch the two of us! We flush the engine every time we go to a marina in the Bahamas. Thank you for the support and kind words.
You guys docked at the marina I keep my boat at 😂
We love that marina! Lucky you !
@@expeditionseanest if you guys are ever in Nassau again, a good place to catch tuna is the north side of Nassau in the deep ocean. You can use radar to find birds and troll around 7mph. You can get skipjacks, blackfin, and yellowfin tunas here. I actually work for that charter company that’s at the marina so I go out there almost every day!
Love the PNW. Lived here for two years, sadly will have to move next year due to the military.
Now you have a great place to visit or live when you retire! We love the west coast!
Tying off to trees is a big no no in places like the Thousand Islands. Park staff will fine. To say its ok if only a few do it is not a valid reason. If the authorities say do not? Then dont. Maybe Georgian Bay is different and ok with the authorities but many areas it isnt.
This is good information. We do not cruise the Thousand Islands. Of course we understand that if the authorities say no , then follow the law. If we can avoid stern tie to a tree , we do . Some rocks work as well and we use those also, as well as man made tie downs cemented into rocks like the one we used in Episode 11
Might I ask what you paid for her? Regards, Fred
I think we paid around $240,000.00 but that includes trailer and taxes
I really appreciate your videos from the bottom of my soul. I currently single hand a small sailboat in the PNW, but I am considering either an R-23 or R-25. I absolutely love sailing, but I am sort of at a crossroads where I think the exploration part of boating trumps the sailing part for me. I would like to more safely and efficiently get to places to explore. If you think storage is a premium on a small tug, let me tell you about a small sailboat. Obviously the price is a major detractor from me jumping to my goal, but I know ultimately I can afford one and I understand the "price" of boat ownership. Your videos are helping me make a very important decision.
That is the sweetest comment! Thank you so much , and we are so happy that you are enjoying the content. We seriously considered a sailboat some years ago, but it just didn’t work out. Michael grew up on a sailboat, but for this chapter of our lives, and the decade moving forward, we felt that the Ranger tug was the best fit for us. Especially the smaller R25 because we can trailer it anywhere. Best of luck finding something that suits your needs and good for you to continue having adventures on the water. This is what life is all about.
As a sailor myself, I will never be caught without a lifejacket when in blue water or even inlets. Granted, sailing is much more involved than this type of cruising, but you never know if you need to move about the boat in a split second.
Very good practice!
Beautiful where you are there. I always thought Georgian bay was crystal clear for snorkeling 🤿
@@adamsons2890 The location is in the title . The Bad River. The closer you are to the tributaries like the French River the more tanin stained the water . There are many locations with crystal clear water elsewhere.
@@expeditionseanest Ok thanks, that makes sense. I Googled Georgian Bay and it’s massive. Good luck with your channel and safe travels. Watch out for those Sasquatch things also 🦧
Great video. What is the make and model of your boat? Very nice set up 😮
Our boat is a 2022 R25 Ranger Tug. Here is a link in case you want to find out more about them. www.rangertugs.com. Thanks for watching and leaving such a nice comment. We appreciate it .
The tell tale (water outlet) is not be dependent on a thermostat opening. It is purely to indicate water flow through the pump. I check ours every time on every motor. If no water, usually the telltale is plugged but not always. Zip tie or thin wire to clean it, but if that doesn’t work then the pump might not be working and bad bad. Same for waverunners, tell tale is on the side of the hull.
Some mercury motors only pump water out of the tell tale when the thermostat opens. The 20 and 25 hp are that way.
Hey guys, I have spent the day watching your videos. I sold my 40’ trawler 3 years ago and now live in the smoky mountains North Carolina. I have really enjoyed watching your adventure on your ranger. I have to say it has kindled a spark in my love of cruising. I have two cats that have been from fixed home to boat life to motorhome back to fixed home here in the mountains. I don’t think they would want to give up their home here so I guess I will be land locked for now. Will continue watching your videos and maybe one day I will be back on the water. Enjoy and God bless ✌️
Richard, we are happy to hear that our videos have prompted good memories for you . There comes a time when life on the water no longer is feasible but for now we will do it as long as we are able. A relaxed life, in the mountains with beloved pets sounds pretty wonderful too. Stay happy and thanks for watching . We love hearing from you , so drop us a line every now and again😸
Are you going to buy a needle nose plier when you get back?
