Terrible Crossing - Miami to Bimini in our Tiny Boat- Ep 60
Join us this week as we cross from Miami to Bimini Bahamas in our little liveaboard boat . It was terrible. After 8 hours of being bounced around we both ended up with serious back pain. But, the weather window was so small we decided it was safe enough to make the crossing. A bit bouncy but safe. Unfortunately the motion caused the water jugs to become loosened and we almost lost them overboard. Michael saved the day with a heroic rescue.

Crossing over to the Berry islands from Bimini is a lot easier on the Bahama Bank...of course it will depend on winds. We've gone that way several times on our way to the Abacos. Water is around 12 to 15 feet deep most all the way to Great Harbour. Of course my comments come too late. Enjoy the Bahamas.

Take a look at the Takacat 260 dinghy. Less than 60 pounds, rated for up to 8hp. No bailing, easy in and easy out of boat, stable, feet will not get wet unless you want them to or if really waves, packs up in two bags. Downside, it does not have a solid bottom and could get cut on a really rough beach like western Florida with the seashells. We have put 4 adults in it no problem. Tows really well but over 15 mph it is almost too light and and almost wants to start kiting.

Enjoying your videos a great deal. You strike a great balance between "boat stuff," "real life stuff," and the [more glamorous] "Instragram adventure stuff." Great photography and pacing overall. Two questions/comments: (1) Have you considered shooting in 2k? I think the 1080p is underselling so many of your beautiful scenes; and (2), just a nitpicky preference on my part, but so much of your beautiful nature photograph is overlaid with music. I often find myself wishing I could just experience the sounds of the scene as you did. Anyway, great channel, keep it up -- we appreciate you guys & your work.

I like to put dielectric grease inside the crimp tube before adding the wires and crimping. just extra protection. I think the built in float switch in that pump is bad. Every time I put my boat in the water I check the float switch to make sure I'm in the auto position on the pump. I also rigged up a back up pump which I can plug directly into the battery charge extensions, in case I need the back up. Also I currently use it to pump out my floor fish box because the macerator pump is bad and a new one is very expensive. Always something on a boat but you also need back ups and work arounds. I really enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work. Thanks

We don’t use the batteries for the air conditioning. We only have two house batteries and they would deplete very quickly. If we want to run the air conditioning, we would use the generator but we have never had to do that. The only time it’s really hot is when we are at the marinas in the Bahamas or in Florida, and then we are hooked up to shore power .In the Bahamas, the breeze is beautiful and with the hatches open, it keeps us at a perfect temperature all day and all night

A few tips on the electrical. The 4/0 cable is far overkill for the purpose. Question on house battery bank fuse. Is this fuse going to your 12 bolt panel? If so, 100 A is plenty. If the fuse is for battery protection then I would fuse at 300 A which is standard if you have a larger engine in the event of having to use the house batteries for cranking. I would have used tinned copper wiring as you are taking boat to salt water.

4/0?! Wow, I guess better over kill than under kill, but that can handle over 300 amps, probably over 400 at that short length. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a battery jumper cable over 2 awg. I wouldn’t have worried about matching the jumper to the main wire, if something is drawing enough to overheat a 1’ 2 awg, that device is probably already on fire, lol. After seeing this PENTHOUSE boat:) in person all i can say its a live aboard in comfort............Now when i saw that fish on his leg (tattoo) that spoke to the fisherman in me! .............im so torn between the XO defender 9, followed so closely by the regal 26 with folding tower........................outboards are the future!

Love your Journeys as well as the quality of your videos. Loved them so much we bought a new R25 this past year. It is truly amazing what you have accomplished with this boat! We are currently looking for a bedding solution similar to what you designed. I just have a couple questions if you dont mind. How thick was the topper you used and was it latex? Again, you guys are great!!!

Hi Chris, Thanks for the kind words. We acutely got rid of the topper and just bought new foam mattresses. We had to cut them with a long knife. Hey maybe some day our paths will cross.

Where do you buy the sun shade stuff you use on the inside of the windshield?

Have you two considered getting a pair of "marriage savers". Seems like a pair of headsets would make communication easier for the two of you.

Hi Bob, Ha Ha..Marriage savers. What a great name. Our little boat is small enough that when Julia speaks in the bow I can hear her clearly. As long as the window is open. Thanks for the tip..

Hi , here in N Z , towing with electric brakes no safety chain is used. If the trailer should detach from the truck, the safety chain would prevent the trailer brakes being applied . Is it something to think about ?

Hi Doug, That actually make complete sense. I had never thought of that. Thanks for sharing.

Great video! Do you store your Honda generator with fuel in it or do you run it dry before storing in your cockpit floor locker? Also, do you have the generator with a 30 amp plug to connect to your shore power cable, or use a 110 to 30 amp pigtail?

We store the generator with fuel in it. but close the vent. we use a 110 to 30 amp pigtail. Cheers, Mike

Been through there a few times. There is great walleye fishing to be had in the channels. Lots of rocky ledges too
