Papaw in the Woods (Papaw in the Woods)

Добавлен 1 янв 2019
I have lived in the Big South Fork area my whole life, even before there was a Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area. As a child my Dad took my brother and me camping, fishing and hunting all over the Kentucky and the Northern Tennessee sections. As a teenager I would drive to camping areas or tie my gear to a dirtbike and go into the backcountry. With the formation of the park and all motorized vehicles banned, I started hiking. I have hiked a great number of the trails in the park with many more on my "to do" list. I have yet to be disappointed with any hike. In the Big South Fork there are unnamed rock formations, waterfalls, overlooks, etc. many without developed trails to them. The feel of discovery is there for adventurous backpackers. You will encounter few, if any other hikers in the backcountry. If you want solitude and adventure, along with the rugged beauty of nature, the BSF is for you... Need advise about a trip? e-mail me, maybe I can help.
Laurel Fork Creek, Blackhouse Branch, Mushrooms, Creek Crossings and Locating a Saddle in a Ridge.
I drove out past Bandy Creek Visitor Center and Campground to the Duncan Hollow Bypass. Out there, at a junction with Jake’s Ridge Loop is a multitude used road that will take you out to a trailhead leading to Laurel Fork Creek. It’s basically a horse trail down there except for the hiking trail along the beautiful stream.
I have a hunch there’s something, or somethings in the Laurel Fork Creek Watershed I would love to find. Even though I didn’t find what I believe is there, this can be considered a “recon” hike. I definitely learned a considerable amount about the area.
I have a different game plan now. My new plan will take me into those drainages by a different route… meaning no mor...

The Amazing Sunset Slot Canyon, another awesome off-trail wonder in Big South Fork!
Просмотров 71814 дней назад
I had heard of but never located Sunset Slot Canyon, a smaller version of Devil’s Cave in the same general area near East Rim Overlook in Big South Fork. When my friend Ben bought up trying to locate the off-trail formation, I was excited for the opportunity. We located the area down to the ridge that contained the rarely visited slot canyon. The main issue was finding a way from the ridge and ...

I decided to take a little drive on a warm late fall day. It took me through the Daniel Boone National Forest on the backroads of McCreary County Kentucky. The overlooks on Parker’s Mountain Road are as beautiful as I remembered them being. My main goal was Rock Creek, a plateau stream first introduced to me when I was just a young boy, by my late father. I visited the day use picnic area, Heml...

My friend Ben, his two dogs met at the Bandy Creek parking lot, then headed on out to the end of Duncan Hollow Road. Laurel Fork Creek and Station Camp Creek join together there. Both streams are simply beautiful and are a combination of deep pools wit...

I hiked with a couple of fine hiking friends who had never been down, or up, the feature known as Maude’s Crack here in Big South Fork. We would do both near the beginning and end of our hike. In between we hiked to the river, downstream to Big Island, up No Business Creek and completed a loop by going up Craft Branch. While I’ve never located where I believe the old homesite along the stream i...

Kerry Woolbright, Jimmy Staffey and I met up at Burnt Mill Bridge for a series of short hikes to some amazing places. Potter’s Double Arch was our first stop. The trail to it begins at Honey Creek Horse Camp. It’s only about a quarter of a mile to see this outstanding feature. We then drove out to Mt. Helen Road to the Mt. Helen Trailhead. We hiked a little over a half mile out to the White Oak...

They had been to Devil’s Cave before and wanted to see East Rim Tunnel and the East Rim Double Pane Window. I met them at East Rim Overlook Parking ...

Two fine Ladies from Northern Kentucky, Angie and Pam, contacted me about hiking in Big South Fork during the fall season and came down for a few days. I took them to see the amazing views from Falls Branch Overlook and Angel Falls Overlook. Just around the John Muir / Sheltowee Trace beyond Angel Falls Overlook is the very nice Angel Falls Arch. We started out at Sawmill Trailhead on Fork Ridge Road in Big South Fork on a cooler than usual late summer day. Big South Fork- Laurel Fork Creek, Station Camp Creek, Historic Homesite, Late Summer Wildflowers

After some health issues and the oppressive summer temperatures taking me off the trail for any strenuous hikes, I finally decided to see exactly what I can handle. The steep hill at the end of Duncan Hollow Road in Big South Fork provided me with just the challenge I needed to prove to myself that I could still do the climbs it takes to hike into the backcountry here. I hiked down the hill to ...

On a day of driving around in Big South Fork looking at the damage from the severe storm on May 26th, I worked a short hike in too. Lots of downed trees along the trail but the National Park Service has done a great job of cutting them out of the trail. Indian Rockhouse was, undo...

I set out solo on a search for the historic homesite of William Riley Hatfield. I found absolutely no evidence of any homesite where I went. Recent evidence of a mature male bear was everywhere I went it seemed. I came within a step and a half of being in striking range of a mid sized copperhead. Whether you like them or not, they’re a beautiful creature and belong exactly where I found it. I a...

That's a pretty little creek for sure. Definitely a few pools in there I would want to cast into.
seems so peaceful out there
Pretty cool to see the rock ledges and slot canyons. It is amazing how the tree roots just find there way into those cracks. Awesome explore and adventure. Congrats on your sub count. Take care and have a wonderful day.
Merry Christmas Randy, as always, enjoyed your video
Congratulations on 1k subs! That’s so awesome! Your videos bring me so much joy. I can’t spend nearly as much time in the Big South Fork as I’d like and your videos help me feel close to a place I love so much and I learn so much about the awesome stuff there! Keep it up! Also that last climb up the mountain on Black House branch was one of the toughest climbs on all the Sheltowee during our thru hike. I had done it before and was wondering if it would be less tough after hiking for 330 miles but it was every bit as tough as i remembered!
Congrats on 1K subs Papaw! Big South Fork holds a special place for me as it was where I had my first solo backpacking trip (before I started recording on YT). Your channel is such an excellent resource for those planning visits to the BSF area. I will definitely be headed to BSF sometime this winter...
I really enjoy your channel. Congratulations on 1,000 subscribers.

Beautiful place my friend! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Congrats on hitting 1,000 subscribers! I think you had 48 or so when I first started watching your channel. My wife and I love your videos. We search through RUclips every Sunday hoping we find a new one. Keep it up! Chris Gray
Another great way to spend a day. Thanks a bunch.
Another nice video Randy. Merry Christmas and hope you have a safe and blessed new year.
What a blessing your videos are. Not only do they help me relax while enjoying your great adventures, but also show me places to go, and many I haven't been to. I've got to head that way in the next few days. I'm excited to see so many of these beautiful places and features. Thank you so much. Merry Christmas.
Laurel is a beautiful and peaceful stream. Always enjoy all the trails down there.
Congratulations 🎊 on 1k The rock formations are so cool looking. I like the way the river looks with that bit of fog along the top. Beautiful scenery out there! Interesting about the treated trees. I enjoyed your hike! Thanks for showing us around 😊

Well I guess I am the only one that hadn’t been there now😁 the slots were very impressive. Will have to get out there shortly
@@kerrywoolbright5716 Whenever you want to go we’ll make it out there. With all the rain we’re having the big waterfalls will be running too. That’ll be a big bonus! Thanks Kerry. Take care my great friend.

10:20 mark. So cool. Off Trails are the best trails. Awesome views and video my friend 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Jason. It’s a beautiful area out there. This isn’t far from Devil’s Cave. There appears to be several slot canyons in that area. Take care and be safe my friend.
so amazing to see and those roots are amazing, so great that the trees find a way to grow in there. Congrats on 1k too!
@@NicoleHikesalot Thank you Nicole. Big South Fork has always amazed me with just how trees can grow roots around solid rock and reach the ground underneath. I don’t understand how they can survive long enough for roots to grow that long. But they do! I’m very pleased to have passed the 1,000 subscriber milestone. Who would have thought that an old guy, pretty much based in Big South Fork would have surpassed a milestone like this and still be growing? It’s all because BSF is a very beautiful wonderland. I’m just the messenger… Hopefully we’ll meet again on a trail soon! Until then please take care and stay safe.
What an exciting day with wonderful finds
I have been seeing Sunset Slot on the landforms site for quite a while, just didn’t know how to approach it. A good friend had been to it from near O&W by hiking up from beyond the bridge. A different friend found a gap in the cliff and went down to it from above. So that’s what I did. On the hike back out I located an easy ridge walk back to the main trail. Now I can easily get back out there to see some amazing, big waterfalls when enough rain has fallen. I’m excited about that! Be safe and take care Cindy.
@@papawinthewoods Thank You! I hope to meet you on the trail someday.
@ If you ever want to meet up for a hike to this or mostly anything else you’d like to visit just let me know. I love helping folks get to see the wonders of BSF. Please bring friends too! It’ll be fun!
Amazing
Thanks Cindy. Do you want to see it for yourself? That can happen you know. Take care my friend.
Great video
Thank you easypeezie. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Please take care, be safe and stay healthy!
That canyon is amazing 😊😊😊 what a cool place to visit 😊
Big South Fork is full of things like this. You have to work a bit for the off-trail features but that makes it more rewarding. Take care Eventyrsoren.
Always look forward to your next adventure and this one was fun to tag along with. Glad to see you went over a thousand subscribers.
I appreciate that. I have many plans for this winter. Hopefully you’ll enjoy them too. 1,000 subscribers.. who would have thought that a little channel like this, based in BSF, would still be growing. I’m sure pleased with it. Take care, be safe and stay healthy.
Great video! At what point did you head down to look for the slot canyon? At Sunset Overlook?
Thanks you Robert. At 16:23 in the video you’ll see exactly where to cut off Sunset Overlook Trail. About 1/2 a mile out Sunset Overlook Trail, you’ll come to this 4x4 post, the main trail turns right at it. Just go straight at the post onto an old, abandoned road. Stay on it all the way out to the end of the ridge, probably 3/4 of a mile. Go through about 100 yards of thicket and bear left to the cliff line. The gap is through more thick brush around the edge of the cliff to the right… Enjoy!
Beautiful slot canyon explore! Nice you saw a turtle out there! 😊
Yeah, Sunset Slot is pretty neat! I hope the turtle finds a warm place to hibernate before temperatures get too cold. Thanks a lot nationalparksprincess. I appreciate it. Take care and stay safe.
Wow, what a find! I had that slot marked on GAIA but hadn’t made it out there yet. Definitely want to go after watching your video, great job!
@@tughoward If you turn off Sunset Overlook at a 4x4 post about a half mile out and do an easy 3/4 mile ridge walk out an old abandoned logging road to the cliff top just before the end of the ridge, you’re there. The gap is to the right of the overlook in this video. It’s hidden by thick brush but just push through it. Take care and enjoy Sunset Slot Canyon. It’s nice!
beautiful 👀
Thank you Lori. I have several hikes planned for this winter. Hopefully you’ll see some things you’ll enjoy in those too. Take care.
Very beautiful
Big South Fork is loaded with hidden, off-trail gems like this. I’m trying to find as many as I can. I’ll never get to see them all! Thank you HEAVENGLAMOUR. Take care and be safe.
Rock Creek is a wonderful place, 8 miles or so from my cabin, I cross it every trip. Always enjoy your videos !!
@@JimJayroe Thanks Jim! Rock Creek is my favorite place in the world! I’m going to be on the lower end, downstream from Bell Farm on Monday. Probably go all the way to Yamacraw and back up. There’s a lot to see down that way too. I appreciate it brother.
Beautiful Trail and Colors! Always nice to see a small stream running after being in a drought. WGB
Very cool to re-live those early memories. See so many beaver signs but I have never seen one. BSF beavers must be nocturnal. That was a great day.
@@kerrywoolbright5716 Going to Rock Creek is always a great day Kerry. On a hike last spring we came down from Parker’s Mountain Trail there at the state line, crossed Rock Creek to take the Sheltowee Trace all the way to Pickett State Park. Part of Rock Creek Loop in BSF was part of that hike as well as the tunnel in Pickett. That’s one great hike! Appreciate it my friend. We need to take the drive to Rock Creek soon! Take care!
I enjoy your videos! Question, is there a trail running along the East side of the river from Station Camp all the way to Angels Landing?
@@kentwilliams13 Thank you Kent. Yes, there’s a trail that runs all along the River on the east side from Big Island all the way to O&W Bridge. It’s a great wildflower hike in the spring.
This brings back so many memories for me, Randy. It's my favorite place on Earth. I can't wait to get back down to see it in person again, it's been way too long since I've been to Rock Creek! Thanks as always for sharing. And congratulations on 1k subscribers!!
