Wishing you all the best in the new year! Looking forward to your videos next year. As for me, best camera is Fujica GW690, and the top films were Acros II, which I can't find anymore here, and then Delta 100. You are exactly right that photography is about seeing and experience. I see the world differently when I'm carrying a camera.
Discovering your channel, I am pleased to finally find out some really interesting content about photography and not gear!! Thanks
Awesome!! Happy to hear -- an Happy New Year!! :-)
Yes,, art!
Wow the the image at 6:07, just beautiful light, and unique look.
I keep looking at the RB slr's on Ebay. You are kinda a bad influence. I'm just going to walk away now.
:-) My apologies!
Te felicito Ari ...tus videos son motivadores .
I like snow too. I also like your pile of books waiting to fall off your piano. 😅
Great video, as always. Wondering how frequently you rely on the meter in your Rolleiflex. Happy holidays!
And the Oscar goes to: Ari Jasksi/Shoot on Film, ---------for Producer, Director, Actor, Musical Score, Set Design, Costume Designer, Make Up & Hair Design-------- In other words you win the "Whole Enchilada". Congratulations & have a great Holiday Ari. Cheers from the Academy.
This video reminded me of a photography teacher in college who preached the idea of… first emulate, then create. Great stuff !
Very inspirational. Thanks 🙏 🏴
I love how you just talk... no BS. Simple. Straightforward. Keep at it, Ari. And thank yoj.
I always enjoy your videos and also your music! I'm glad that you picked your TLR as your #1 Camera. My #1 choice is my Mamiya C-330! I love Medium Format and the ability to change lenses on my Mamiya. I have all 7 lenses and also some of the accessories, so my life is complete. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Lovely!!
Really enjoyed this. Had to put on Blues In Green to celebrate.
Love it!
What about developers, shure there is some favorites for you!?

Great stuff as always, Ari. I'm surprised how much contrast you bring forth in post. When I alter my film photography to the point I can really see my edits, I feel like I've gone way too far. I might start with some of the examples you showed, but I would then back each effect down until it looks to me like it could have happened in-camera. You are clearly more comfortable with bolder choices. (Maybe that's why I am watching your wonderful videos and not the other way around!) Personally, however, I love the muted original of the grasses photograph with the horizon in the background. I find that flat, sleepy look much more sensual than the tighter frame grass-focused image. I "feel" the muted image more, while I "see" the edited, refined image. Different strokes! Thanks for the great thoughts.
And that is the beauty of photography: we see things differently, and then we can show that to others. I'm not suggesting my edits are the way to do it. And, I seem to go forth and back depending on my mood. As I said, especially with the first picture, I think I went too far in editing. The grass picture, on the other hand, was clearly a choice I made -- and as I tried to explain, I knew that I will loose some richness of the original image with the expense of the punch :-). Thanks for commenting and reminding us that there are different ways to see and edit. :-)
Oh. "Analog film process junkie". I love this. That's me too.
Great work! It's your site and home, so You decide! Every episode a Joy! Always interesting! Where we differ, the AI thing! It will take us even more from reality! I will do a longer piece on this! Have a Great, Super Christmasand a Wonderful New Year, to You and Yours! Bravo!
Thanks thanks!! And we may have a slightly different point of view to AI, DUNNO. Here's mine: First, it doesn't interest me as a photographer AT ALL. As a software engineer, professor, and software executive, I am interested in this area a great deal. But as a photographer, I'm not interested. I'm also not interested in AI-enhanced photoshopped images that fall into the same category as totally artificial prompt-initiated images. Not interesting. Not creative. Second, I do not believe AI risks the work of creative people at all. I have not seen anything that would suggest so. All AI-generated images I've seen so far are boring, obvious, gimmicky, and without any emotional depth. Same with AI-generated music, by the way. Of course, this could change, but I doubt it based on my understanding of how generative AI works. Third, AI will make many jobs obsolete. If you get your income from shooting products, fashion, birthday parties, weddings, and other conveyor-belt photography, that all will be at great risk. Why would you ask a photographer to take your business portrait when you can already upload your cellphone selfie to the cloud and get a perfect business picture back? For creative photography -- AI will make it all even more obvious and valuable!
I started shooting black and white in 1970 as a 15 year old. I bought a camera for five dollars, we had little money so frames were precious. By the time I got to college in the mid-70's I had saved up for a Nikon FM with a 35 mm lens. And I had the college darkroom, chemicals and paper for free. I took some years off to concentrate on my profession. The pandemic was helpful as I had lots of time for film. I have a few medium format cameras. My favorite is my Rollieflex 3.8 E. Second is the Mamiya 7. I am now begging to take 4x5 photos. It is all B&W. I develop and scan my own film. I prefer Tri-X. I really enjoy your channel above all others. A few reasons, I very much like the photos that you take. Your technical ability is superb and you share it in a way that is enjoyable and accessible. I like the cameras that you shoot with. Your personality, sense of humor, and philosophy all sit very well with me. So my message to you is Happy New Year. Please keep the content coming, I watch every video. And finally, thank you. Jim Jacobsen, Seattle, Washington.
Jim, thank you so much!! Means a lot coming from somebody like you with such an extensive and long background in photography. Now, a word of warning: at least for me, the jump from medium format to 4x5 was much bigger than the jump from 35mm to medium format. 4x5 and bigger has been a struggle --- not so much as a technical challenge but more an artistic dilemma. The amount of details and nuances is just overwhelming. So give yourself some slack and time :-)
@@ShootOnFilm TX Pan is NOT TRi-X. It's a poor copy! sad! The curling a major reason for me,to go Ilford!
Hi Ari, just a question: I seem to have pesky water spots in my B/w negs. I used to be too rushed in inverting my developer tank, was worse then. So I learned to be much gentler. I still get Those nasty spots from time to time. Any suggestions?
Great experiment. RUclips showed me the video of Lucy Ridges - Between Truth & Illusion on the Ilford channel after your video which was perfect in atmosphere
😊 Awesome. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Glad you picked FP4+ as you favourite. I absolutely love the look of that film. Just the perfect amount of grain and the buttery tones are divine.
I totally agree. It really speaks Film but is not too weird or grainy to be extremely usable!
Shoot on Film has been my favourite YT channel this year, and I watch quite a few. I think the things that set you apart are the creativity, the sense of fun and exploration and particularly the philosophical dimension. Thanks for making and sharing all these wonderful videos in 2024. Merry Christmas!
Oh, I'm very happy to hear you find my rants entertaining and maybe even useful :-) Means a lot! And Merry Christmas to you, too!
Two thumbs way up! The only gear we have in common is the Holga and Ilford films but that's OK. Have a Happy Christmas!
Thanks!! And merry Christmas to you too!!
happy holidays to you & yours, will see you in January to look at another interesting video & hear your fireside talks
Happy holidays! See you soon.
Ari, thank you, now I can get rid of all my cameras and get the ones you say are the best. I already use most of the films you rate as the best. And thank you for a year of your insights and thoughts on photography, always entertaining and thought-provoking. Have a safe and peaceful Merry Christmas. I look forward to more of your wonderful videos next year.
Thanks!! Just one piece of advice: buy, don’t sell 😊. Have a wonderful Christmas time!!!
Hi, Ari-long time since I’ve commented. I agree with you about Rollie cameras except for one thing-the orientation drives me nuts. The film rolls in the camera from a down-up direction rather than from left to right as in an SLR. This makes me crazy when I get it in the enlarger! The pictures are sideways so I have to stand to the side to understand what I’m looking at. I have to rotate the easel 90 degrees and depending on how close the enlarger lens is sometimes it bangs into the easel when you change paper. So…nothing wrong with the cameras but boy does it make me crazy when printing! I just need to get used to looking at things sideways I guess!
That is so true. That is one of the reasons why I have my enlarger so that and can also stand by its side. 😅
Thank you for a great video to end your RUclips Year. I think my Rolleiflex 3.5f and Ilford FP4 are my favourite combination but I don't have a boat! I've enjoyed every one of your videos. Very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year with your family, see you in January.
Excellent. Many people are of the opinion that it is actually the 3.5 that is the sweet spot of quality and usability. And then just a small secret: small wooden boats are cheaper than your Rolleiflex 😊
looking forward to seeing more content in 25 - thx! merry x-mass
More to come! Have a wonderful Christmas!
Every Saturday you make my day, Ari. Best wishes from Canada.
Wow, thank you!
Thank you for the videos that you post. I may not always agree with what you have to say but your comments are always interesting, inspiring and thought provoking. Have a wonderful Christmas break. BTW, the Rolleiflex 2.8F is my favourite camera too!
Thanks for sharing. And it seems you also sometime agree😊. I think agreeing is overrated. And a good discussion and difference of opinions is underrated. Generally speaking.
My film photo year was created by Praktica B200 and Kiev 60. I also enjoy compact East German camera Beirette Electronic. Merry Christmas!
Very nice! Interesting cameras!!
Unfortunately, none of those cameras came on my top 5 list (don't have them 😂). About the Bergger PanCro 400, do you develop with the Bergger Berspeed? Have a nice end of the year and a happy new one. 🙂
😊. I developed Pancro with Rodinal or with Adox XT3
Hello Ari and thanks for you're video. I wonder what you develope black and white film in and/or what you could say about Filn/developer combinations? Thanks again and happy ho;idays, John.
I use two developers: rodinal and adox XT3. Depends what I want, but my favorite combination was FP4 and Adox.
@@ShootOnFilm Hello again Ari, yes I use Rodinal with agfa APX. I found a large stock of APX in 70mm. Once used in "photo finish" camera systems at race tracks, I understand! Adox XT3 is a new one to me, I will explore. I notice you say your favorite F/D combination WAS FP4 & Adox. Is there a problem with a supply of the film or Dev? As I started in photography almost seventy years ago my favorite F/D combination became FP3 & Ilford Hyfin, sadly Ilford took the developer off the market and I have never been able to find the Hyfin chemical make up which is a pitty as I'm sure I could make it from raw chemicals? Regards John.
@@johnriley1960 I don't think there is a shortage. But to me those two are kind of opposite ends of the spectrum. Adox XT3 is a Kodak XTOL copy. It gives a smooth, fine grain and pushes really nicely. Rodinal, on the other hand, increases grain (which is often good as I shoot only Medium format and larger). Rodinal is also perfect for stand development. I sometimes say that XTOL / Adox XT3 is for the Sunday look, whereas Rodinal is for the work days :-)
I congratulate you for your channel. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, experiences and advice about photography. If you can and have the time for it, I’ll much appreciate if you you could advice me about what 120 manual camera (eventually a battery only for the meter) and medium format 4x5 (eventually bigger because II want to shoot with positive paper and make reversal process, even direct cyanotype in camera). The only problem is my budget I can not afford expensive equipments. I thank you in advance for your advice. Merry Christmas and very happy and best photos ever Sergio
For medium format I really like Japanese TLR cameras (Yashicamat etc) or Rolleicord. For 4x5 take a look at Intrepid cameras.
Thank you very much for all the work you have put in to share your knowledge and experience with us. I'm really looking forward to more philosophical knowledge dissemination in the coming year. Merry Christmas and a peaceful 2025 to you and everyone close to you.
So nice of you. Have a wonderful Christmas and the New Year
Hey Ari. Regarding your travels, how do you get film through airport security - do you ask for hand checks, or do you just run the film through the scanner there?
Always hand screen. 😊
@@ShootOnFilm I always carry an empty box for Delta 3200. Once in Malaga the personnel showed me 1600 max on the side of the machine, but then I showed him my Delta 3200 box and then I got hand inspection. The personnel at Aalborg Airport would not hear any argument as they have been instructed that their scanners are film safe. No scanner is fil safe. And thank you again for a fantastic channel here on youtube.
Heya Ari, fomapan 100 (ok in 35mm) has been my revelation this year too.. developed in caffenol for extra budget friendliness.. have a great Christmas and a fantastic new year - lang may yir lum reek - as they say round these parts.. look forward to following your journeys in 2025..

Thank you for your presence on RUclips and the sharing of your thoughts and photography/photographs during 2024. You inspired me to return to the joys and pleasure of film. I just bought a Rolleiflex 3.5F along with a Crown Graphic 4x5. I will be using these to start a project for 2025 photographing my local area throughout 2025. A changing of the seasons. Thank you! You too! See you in January 😊
Thanks for your wonderful videos! My number one camera is a Mamiya RB67 and my "tourist camera" is a Pentax KM. My favorite film, especially in 35mm, is HP5+ but I also shoot quite a lot of Fomapan in 120 and 4x5 for a more "gritty" look.
That big mamiya is an awesome beast. I was contemplating buying one, too, but the decide no at least for now. 😅
