Photographing mini-series with my Rolleiflex
My friend Kari Paukola and I made a small trip to the coast again. It is always so much fun!
As for tools, I had my trusted Rolleiflex 2.8f and Bergger Pancro 400 film developed in Adox XT3. And this time, I had extra fun playing those little tunes behind the video with my 1912 upright piano!
After seeing this video, you can check out Kari's pictures.

An extraordinary photography/music -collaboration with Stefano Zanobini, an Italian musician

I had a marvelous opportunity to work with Stefano Zanobini, an Italian violinist and musician, on his new music album by Tobias Hume, an interesting Scottish composer, viola da gamba player, and soldier. We created a photo book and a music CD in the size of a traditional LP record. And now, you can order this CD and the accompanying fine art photo book here: www.novantiqua.net/prodotto/A-Quest...
Photographing for a simple reason: to see what things look like in photographs
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.14 дней назад
In this episode, we do some photographing for the simple reason of just seeing the pictures. We use 4x5 inch large format cameras, a Graflex Speed Graphic, a Graflex RB Series B, and a Mentor Studio Reflex all more than 60 years old. We then go to my darkroom to print the pictures to see what they look like.
Shooting landscape and seascape with my Hasselblad cameras on an amazing lighthouse island

Hasselblad cameras are excellent landscape cameras. Big, medium format film size stores all the details if you want. Very slow films for action photography: NoColorStudio at ISO 5 and Kentmere 100 at ISO 25.

I love movement in my photos. Using long exposure is a means to capture more than a fraction of a second into a frame. That freezes movement and crates exciting photos. For that, I used slow films: -NoColorStudio #5, rated ISO 5; www.nocolorstudio.com/shop/p/no5-high-contrast-120-film -Kentmere 100 pulled to ISO 25; www.ilfordphoto.com/kentmere-100-120

I found an old German large-format camera on eBay. I believe it is from the 1930s. The slow speeds we partially stuck, and it was missing film holders. And like all cameras from eBay, it needed some care! I fixed it and made film holders for it. I still need to improve the holders, but I took a few pictures. And it kinda works! 3D printing shop I used: www.3dsuunnittelu.fi/3d-tulostus/ 3D model...

Modern photography is heavily predicated on single, stand alone images - Instagram is 'home' to this. Every camera club I've ever attended has been the same, with a sometimes tacit and more often overt expectation that competitions based again on single images (occasionally triptych sequences) are the beginning, middle and end of photography. Mix into this that biting sharpness and resolution are automatic pre-requisites and you soon discover that there's no room (at least in the club environments I trialled) for individuality or personality or departure from those expectations that you'll simply fall into line and the chances of discovering a photographic 'voice' are effectively nil. Happily, I discovered 'long form' photography - projects founded on themes that are taking years to evolve. An early test 'zine of my 'Small People' project has been so rewarding to test 'proof of concept'. Print is the natural end game for photography and attached to this is my simplification of the process - everything is shot on either Rollei Retro 400S, Kodak Tri-X, Bergger Pancro 400, Fuji Acros II or Fomapan 400, all rated and dev'd at 800 ISO. I agree entirely with having different cameras - for me, a 1957 Leica M3 double stroke, a Leica IIIf 'red dial', Topcon RE Super and Super D, Pentax SV, Agfa Clack, a 1930-ish Houghton & Butcher Ensign Carbine No.7, Konica MR640 and Fuji GL690 all get regular use. It's said that we all need three things in life - a good doctor, a clever accountant and a forgiving priest but we actually need a forth...a top drawer camera repair person. Fortunately I have one and all my gear is tip top. The long form photography projects have really shown me where my interests are and now something of a 'style' is starting to make itself known. It's such a pleasure to discover your channel - always interesting and thought provoking. Keep on keeping on...

A Diana 151 from the 60s also works to get that 'softness.' Advantage: tou don't need an umbrella which winds up in your images. Disadvantage: you might yourself get soaked wet and your Diana 151 might not only have light leaks. Great video. Thanks!

I've used a backpack and umbrella. You can tuck the umbrella stick under backpack strap and it keeps there almost by itself. I've also used velcro straps to mount umbrella on backpack strap, that way you can keep it over your head too. I must say I'm much more worry about rain with film gear. It can rust, film is ruined by tiny bit of water and gear in great condition is not as easy to replace as with digital.

If you havent already considered it, you might think about making some kind of electronic 'zine of your work. I thought to myself that the combination of your piano and photography would be worth "displaying" as background to a get together with friends or just for myself. Break it up into chapters - seasons of the year, location(s), your favorites, whatever. An hour or two or more?????? I would think I'm not the only one who would be glad to pay for this content. • @ShootOnFilm
      @ShootOnFilm 6 дней назад

Thank you, thank you. Yes, it is fiber-based. I have a three-phase process to get my prints flat: 1) Let them dry by hanging them with clothes pegs just enough for the wont to drip anymore (ruclips.net/video/mo_pdkcLSn8/видео.htmlsi=5u47kRJ2H9hguB_N&t=415) 2) Then, put them on a flat surface with some weights on the corners for about a day: (ruclips.net/video/mo_pdkcLSn8/видео.htmlsi=Sragu3F47WuG2ek-&t=416) 3) Then, finally, if it is a small print between the pages of a sturdy book and a lot of weight on top (I use my guitar amp :-) ) or for bigger prints, I took some shelves from an old Ikea bookshelf, and I put them between the shelves for 2-3 days. The key is this process. You cannot let the curl al the way ever. That's why this #2 is so so important.

Your approach to understand and interpret the composer and music and then choose from preexisting prints is interesting and for MOST of the album sleeves (and music) I have curled up with over the decades - a bit backwards. Most (not all) would go on a "shoot" for a given album cover and then maybe co-mingle a few live performance shots. I'm wondering how would the end result have been different if you had searched for the "perfect shot" . In any case, this is a wonderful endeavor which I predict will have a life of its own for decades of listeners (and readers) to come.... Immersing ones self in an album sleeve, photographs, music and liner notes for an afternoon of listening and understanding has always been once of my greatest pleasures. Look forward to receiving my order.

Very good topic. I use the method of taking the camera everywhere I go. Even if I'm not going out to take pictures. Hospital visits, job interviews, shopping and many places where no one else would take a camera or take a photo. Of course, some light camera that fits in the kangaroo pocket of a hoodie. Or in the little pocket of my backpack, and I don't regret bumping into something. I even set the aperture in advance, at the last minute I just set the shutter speed if necessary. The result will be random. In this case, I stipulate one thing for myself, not photograph something that is ordinary. And I'm only aiming from the hip. Viewfinders on them are just stuffing. Thus, a whole roll becomes the "last" frame. Just carry Your camera with You for two weeks or months. I wish You good lights!

While I was commiserating with you about the loss of LP-size covers and artwork I thought - well, why don't you make a 30x30 book and include a CD at the back of the book - only to find out minutes later that that was exactly what you did. Bravo! And then I couldn't resist the temptation of immediately ordering a copy of this Gesamtkunstwerk from Italy. Finally a chance for me to actually "own" a collection of your Images. By the way: music and photography have a long history of complementing each other in the collection of Manfred Eicher's ECM records. OK, only in the meagre format of CD cases and the tiny booklets they contain. But it's there all right. And sometimes I'm not sure whether I bought the CDs for the music or for the evocative photography in the booklets, mostly in B&W. Thanks for your inspiring contribution ...

Thank you!! Yes, a tiny CD booklet can be like a zine -- and some of them are really nice!

That music and your style of photography seem like a great match. Ethereal, evocative, elegant.

I feel so lazy after watching your videos. I guess that is a good thing because it is motivating.

Such an inspiring and unique video. And such a creative enterprise. It's about time the packaging of CDs came into this century. Such an opportunity for you to showcase your marvelous photos.I hope it an overwhelming success.

Photography is not visual but musical and piano is black and white. Incredibile, vero?
