  • I had a marvelous opportunity to work with Stefano Zanobini, an Italian violinist and musician, on his new music album by Tobias Hume, an interesting Scottish composer, viola da gamba player, and soldier. We created a photo book and a music CD in the size of a traditional LP record.
And now, you can order this CD and the accompanying fine art photo book here: www.novantiqua...
A special thanks goes to Olli-Pekka Karppinen (www.tampereenk...) from the Conservatory of Tampere, who helped me translate the correct translations of musical terms and instruments used by Tobias Hume in Finnish.

What an amazing project. As a child of the 60's, album covers, and especially fold out ones, were almost as important as the record itself. Truly a lost art, but maybe on it's way back (I hope). Well done Ari on what looks like a stunning set of images. I will try and get a copy of the record if I can, as long as brexit hasn't stopped me from doing that (like so much else).

Your approach to understand and interpret the composer and music and then choose from preexisting prints is interesting and for MOST of the album sleeves (and music) I have curled up with over the decades - a bit backwards. Most (not all) would go on a "shoot" for a given album cover and then maybe co-mingle a few live performance shots. I'm wondering how would the end result have been different if you had searched for the "perfect shot" . In any case, this is a wonderful endeavor which I predict will have a life of its own for decades of listeners (and readers) to come.... Immersing ones self in an album sleeve, photographs, music and liner notes for an afternoon of listening and understanding has always been once of my greatest pleasures. Look forward to receiving my order.

Oh, I so much relate. Since my teenage years, I would save money, go and buy an LP, read every word from the cover, sleeve and booklets, study who played, what instruments were used, what studio it was recorded, who is the composer, arranger etc etc. and enjoying the pictures -- while listening to the music. I miss that experience!

Yah. Even to the point where listening to a single track on the radio is only part of the discussion without the previous or following track. A crappy pair of headphones and a pile of albums was an afternoon excursion to far off places.

@@stephenm103 Totally. And even today, if I hear one of those tunes somewhere, I know exactly what is the song/tune to follow next :-)

Because I missed the opportunity to buy your wonderful Zine some months ago I immediately bought a copy of this music book and look foreword to hold it in my hands. Thank you for that opportunity.

An intriguing post! While I was commiserating with you about the loss of LP-size covers and artwork I thought - well, why don't you make a 30x30 book and include a CD at the back of the book - only to find out minutes later that that was exactly what you did. Bravo!
And then I couldn't resist the temptation of immediately ordering a copy of this Gesamtkunstwerk from Italy. Finally a chance for me to actually "own" a collection of your Images.
By the way: music and photography have a long history of complementing each other in the collection of Manfred Eicher's ECM records. OK, only in the meagre format of CD cases and the tiny booklets they contain. But it's there all right. And sometimes I'm not sure whether I bought the CDs for the music or for the evocative photography in the booklets, mostly in B&W.
Thanks for your inspiring contribution ...

Wow that is very cool!!! Also beautiful instrument!!! I am still not fully understanding how you decided to pick the photographs to the music. Was it by research of the song or his life and what the song felt and what the picture felt? I am probably overthinking this because I don’t understand the process. If you were to put a picture or series of pictures to one of your favorite songs what would the song and the picture be and why? This was a great and thought provoking video!! Thank you!!!

The selection process was mostly emotional. But I also wanted to understand Hume's life and reflect on that to the best of my abilities. So I studied him and his life. I also studied Humes's original compositions on paper and tried to understand the harmonics, melodies, and structures. Just to get to the same wavelength.
Then, I selected a theme for each section and started to go through my photos. At some point, I had probably hundreds of alternatives - and then, finally, I selected these.
So some systematic work, but mostly intuition. 🙂. Thanks for asking!!! Maybe I should have explained that better ....
