Go out and get a violin made from a very good luthier today. It might cost more than a used SUV, but less than a home , and sound and play as well as a 300 yr old strad. It's crazy these musicians get it in their heads they must have these instruments valued at millions. They are after all, only wood till somebody makes them sing.
When violin dealers talking about musicians being unable to afford instruments...and when a museum curator says a violin that never ever plays is the best violin in the world...🙄
In 1961 I was offered use of the Bass of Spain Stradivari cello for a performance of the Dvorak concerto. The owner of the instrument required me to use the gut strings which were on the instrument, and I had 5 days to become acclimated with the instrument. Regretfully, I refused that kind offer in favor of my instrument, which was a high quality modern cello with steel A and D strings and silver wrapped G and C strings. Possibly a mistake of youth.
I bet the museum workers have secretly played the glass encased Strad Seems silly and snobbish to demand it not be played. It would be like donating a Michaelangelo painting with the requirement of hanging it facing the wall!
If I were to live in a world where the instruments of Guarneri and Stradivarius weren't so highly regarded with auctions and entire industries around them I would be a lot happier.
If you have a maximum of a thousand of anything in this world, then the prices go up. Add to that 300 years of maintenance work and hey presto! For you and me... just buy a 100 year old one.
We have the technology to CT scan these instruments down to the micron level to determine their endomorphologies. It is the carving of the inside plates of the violin that makes them special. This is the least known thing about them.
Thanks so much for posting this wonderful film - but am I the only one to have trouble with the sound? One channel only? Particularly unfortunate with a music documentary! Any chance of reloading (there is the trailer here on RUclips where the sound is fine)? Thank you!
La plupart du temps ce sont des prêts de fondation philanthropiques ou de banques et de milliardaires comme Bernard Arnault LVMH qui prête un Stradivarius à Tedi Papavrami.
Chuck Missler title brought me here. Stayed for the perspective. I think propping up these instruments as a sacred cow is a lesson in narcissism. These musicians believe THEY deserve to play an exclusive instrument. Most other musicians own various instruments such as a jazz trumpet vs a classical one. Leave the fiddles alone, they are part of history for everyone to enjoy.
24:59 "I don't care who you are, anyone who has the privilege of playing a great Strad, um, must see it as a privilege. You know, they can't expect to play them for life." Uuhhhhh..... what about Maxim Vengerov and Joshua Bell who have bought their Strads for life? There must be a couple of others who have too. It's extremely rare, however, possible for a world-class musician to own their own Strad.
I protest! Violins belong to violinists! Not to collectors or museums or academies who only lock them up or hide them away! The makers of these instruments would have agreed with me! These people are like the goblins in the Harry Potter series. seriously!
+Jan Viljoen that is actually a rather biased test. Think about this: say you compare at least 3 violins. You can compare the first 2 violins but after the second one is played, do you REALLY remember how the first violin sounded actually without bias on how "good" or "bad" it sounded compared to the second? Psychologically, impossible. And also, it is the history and the perfection of the craftsmanship of these instruments that are special. These instruments have NEVER been improved dramatically since those instruments came out. Hence, they are the perfect instruments and are only copied and duplicated but never improved on.
lots of fake "Strads" and "Guarneris" out there, with even more spurious "Certfications of Authenticity"--some by very famous and 'reputable' dealers/authorities. Also many that have been "restored" beyond recognition. There are also many concert fine violins of this period or equal tone quality by makers such as Tononi, Ruggieri, Bergonzi, Tecchler, Gofriller etc, etc.

Such elitist crap. I very much suspect that any professional player could find an affordable handmade instrument that was close to the playability and sound of these mega buck antiques if they took the time to find one. This is all about marketing investments for the mega rich and has nothing to do with music. It's also about rich white men sitting in their gaudy mansions on their hideous thrones inviting musicians to play for them. Just as it was when these instruments were made. How ironic.
Boogiewoogie. I wrote it was quite sad to read your comment, not that your comment was sad. The difference is that I do not agree with your sour grape comment.
My left ear loves this!
Fascinating! I am so very happy for Ruth Palmer. Glad she found her Strad.!
What a wonderful program. Gee I learnt a lot about violin appreciation and value
Thank you!
Very Instructive Bravo !

I've heard some fabulous violins and a viola out of Phillip Injeian...

The sad part is that this documentary is that 3 years later Dietmar Machold himself was exposed. Oh the irony that they interviewed him for this.
I bet the museum workers have secretly played the glass encased Strad Seems silly and snobbish to demand it not be played. It would be like donating a Michaelangelo painting with the requirement of hanging it facing the wall!
... so the reward for being the most finely-crafted instrument of music is to be silenced forever...

More to follow just starting!!
HE IS VERY MAGIC .
i wonder who was the rich person that deemed these violins "great". studies have shown you can't really tell the differences between old and new.
Thanks so much for posting this wonderful film - but am I the only one to have trouble with the sound? One channel only? Particularly unfortunate with a music documentary! Any chance of reloading (there is the trailer here on RUclips where the sound is fine)? Thank you!
bein passed some years back.
Gemeint ist wohl "Guarneri"!
La plupart du temps ce sont des prêts de fondation philanthropiques ou de banques et de milliardaires comme Bernard Arnault LVMH qui prête un Stradivarius à Tedi Papavrami.
Stupid not to play it. No way in hell he wanted it to be that way. No way.

As a luthier, Guitars and not violins, I'd hate to see the instruments I've built during the past 55 years going to waste and never played.

It's all in their minds!
in stereo if possible pls.
The Wood Was Aged In Volcanic Ash , The Varnish Contains Crushed Gem 💎 Stones .
One benefit of these instruments becoming valuable is it's more likely it will be taken care of better.
I protest! Violins belong to violinists! Not to collectors or museums or academies who only lock them up or hide them away! The makers of these instruments would have agreed with me!
These people are like the goblins in the Harry Potter series. seriously!
That is why they are so overrated.
Watch the blind test on Web/U tube between old and new violins, the result is undetermined.
I don't mind that he owns them. But they should be made available to the worlds great violinists to be played.

But what happens when they’re all gone or broken? Some should be preserved so the future can remember the remarkable craftsmanship
@@cwhatch1 Once they become too fragile to play, they can then be placed in a glass case for their beauty to be preserved.
@48:15 what is this song?
Hora Staccato by Dinicu, maybe the Heifetz arrangment/transcription...?
It is the Heifetz arrangement and is played by James Ehnes. (It was in the rolling credits at the very end)

What is the title of the song played at 17:14 ?
yegoun kim recuerdos de la alhambra by albeniz
its by Francisco Tarrega
Atrocious audio! About 10db down with a raspy noise at around 200Hz.
Bro!! Fix the Fing sound before you post videos, on INSTRUMENTS THAT DEAL WITH SOUND!!!! OMG, Sorry.... pet peeve!
I have a made in Mexico strat.... ocaster
Stratovarius
Why do these musicians need to borrow instruments, surely there are affordable great instruments being made all over. What utter snobbery this is!
And what exactly is a "Meassiah" ???
The term Messiah means someone chosen To be the king or ruler over something. Such as a world.
Or savior as well.
OK. But what about "Meassiah" then?
As far as I'm concerned that's either how they spell it in a different language or they spelled it wrong all together.
Or that might be how the people such as Stradivari spelled the word at the time.
Truth is that a great player can make a student violin sound like a Strad....all the rest is just marketing.

Pretty sure that race has nothing to do with it and it is quite sad to read your comment.
Oh my comment is sad? Ok just rich people...that make you feel better?
Boogiewoogie. I wrote it was quite sad to read your comment, not that your comment was sad. The difference is that I do not agree with your sour grape comment.
I'm not sure how grapes sour or otherwise come into it.
Blah-Blah-Blah... do you play violin? Or do you just sit around and find race in your corn flakes?
I am not fan of Suzuki method. From my own teaching experience, that method had very bad influence on kids.
