1930's Crocheted Lace Dress | Fashion Anatomy

This lovely two-piece dress was hand crocheted somewhere between 1910 and the 1930's. When it came to me it was so dusty that the wash water was brown. To get the collar to stand up, I made a Mandarin collar of nude colored silk organza and hand stitched it inside the original collar. This can easily be removed if needed and it did not compromise the integrity of the historical garment. The cle...

Ooh now I want one
Hi, Skirtedgalleons! Great to hear! I want another and have enough of the green from last years boiled wool coat to make one. I think I want several! Thanks for watching and for leaving the comment. Happy Sewing!
Thanks so much for this, You're a thorough teacher and your explanation of every step is so appreciated. I've never sewn boiled wool, but you've convinced me that I should consider it in the future. It's too difficult to find vests and jackets that fit me properly. It would be well worth the time to learn and make a pattern for myself that I can use again and again. 🪡
@@designlady1732 Dear Designlady1732, Thank you so much for this comment. I deeply appreciate it. If you decide to make a vest of woven fabric, you can do the same just be sure to give yourself enough seam allowances all the way around, including the neckline and armholes. Also make facings. I hope to teach tailoring at some point and if I do, I’ll teach how to line a vest. Happy sewing and thank you again!💝🌈🥰
@@SewWithSally The compliments are well-deserved! Thanks for the tips! ❤
Sally!! I was looking for patternmaking youtube videos for my students (high school) and I see you! What a surprise! Thank you for everything, you're the best teacher EVER! love you.
Dear Kittydidivah, What a wonderful thing to hear! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My mission is to pass on as many of the patternmaking and sewing skills I can to the next generations. You are helping me do just that! I would love to chat more and learn what it is you teach. If you ever feel you want to communicate with me, please send me an email. thedressmakersstudio@gmail.com Have a wonderful day. Happy Sewing and Patternmaking!
It does not work, I have tried my wife mesuring with your drawing, and it does not work, look totally crooked
Dear Eddieengelbrecht7550, This is not good news! I am sorry to hear this did not work for you. I have used this method for decades and it has NEVER let me down. Also, if you look at the comments below, you will find a lot of happy people. I wish I could see how you are doing this and also the shape of the sloper you are using. In any case, perhaps try checking all numbers again. If the front and back armhole measurements are a lot different, try to find a balance by adding the two together, then add 1/4" to the back measurement and take 1/4" away from the front measurement, draft the sleeve, cut it in muslin and test it again. If the angle of the drape is not good, then try rotating it a bit to see if that helps. Best wishes! Happy Sewing!
certainly interesting design, Not fabric I would have picked. guess that is why I'm not a fashion designer. Being that bold making fabric selections not one of my better ideas. Thank you for sharing another wonderful design.
Dear Dianacaffee, You are most welcome. I would not wear a dress this eye-catching but the woman that did wear it looked amazing in it. There are so many interesting elements in this garment. I am glad you shared your thoughts and thank you for taking time to comment.
Hi Sally.Yes I read it too and was also captivated by the details of Angela's life. A great read. I believe she has another one coming out.Looking forward to your next review.
Hello, Marion! Thank you for leaving this comment. I did not know that Angela is coming out with another book! This is good news, thank you for sharing it. Happy Sewing!
When you look at the sleeves on the finished garment, the fabric twists inward toward the wrist. Is that intentional? How could that be prevented?
Hello, Seekercons4498, You are right! I have a feeling the sleeves could have been rotated a bit to the back and this would have been solved. I sometimes miss things so am glad you caught it and mentioned it. Thanks for watching and for commenting!
P.S. The printed silk blouse does not seem to have this issue. Not sure why,...
Wow! Every time I watch these fashion anatomy videos I think: Humans are wonderful creatures who have the capacity for great things! Thanks for sharing, as always!
Hello, Clauselmilord! Thank you for commenting. I am so happy to hear someone say this. Being a human is so magical when you think we have created SO much out of the natural things we see around us. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Happy Sewing!
Thank you for this video. I'm getting back into sewing after years off and now have a strict plan to only use natural fibers for my garments. I wanted to know more about the traditional natural interfacings because fusible interfacing made of heated plastics (and bi-products of petroleum) make me uncomfortable. They don't biodegrade and they add an unnecessary toxic element to your garment which penetrates your skin every time you sweat. Food for thought! Thanks for this very informative video.
Dear Jasminjwhite, Thank you for taking time to leave this comment. I am completely in agreement with you about plastics getting into our bodies. As a matter of fact, I am going to be making a video about certain "healthy" fabrics in the not too distant future. I appreciate you commenting and watching this video and am very glad it was helpful to you. Happy Sewing!
thank you for sharing such a beautiful work. You are so right, it must have taken so much time and patience to make such a piece and how fortunate was the one who got to wear it.
Hello, Dianacaffee, You are most welcome! Yes, it is a masterpiece ! I feel fortunate to be able to jus look at it up close. Happy Sewing! Thank you for watching and for commenting.💝
A beautiful outfit. What a difference to the fast fashion makes of today!!
Hi, Marion! Yes, how very true. We sewers appreciate the slow way of making good garments. Thank you for watching and for your comment. 🧵🪡♥
I love this. Perhaps it was someone's wedding dress. I have a very similar garment, just the blouse. The stand up collar on mine is wired with fine white coated wire.❤❤
Dear Maryleeswope3353, Thank you so much for telling me this! Wire makes perfect sense! If there was wire, it may have deteriorated over time and was removed. This is a perfect answer to my question! Thank you again!
It is beautiful! I agree that it was probably made in Ireland. Going by how long it used to take my grandmother to crochet things, I would guess about 4 to 6 months crotcheting all day. Thanks for showing us.
Dear Annette, Thank you SO much for telling me about your grandmother and how long this might have taken. I LOVE that so far two people agree it is most likely from Ireland. Happy Sewing!
Thank you, Sally, for this treat! I was thinking the dress could be from Ireland. In knitting those little things are bobbles or nupps. I'm thinking Ireland because they are so patient; the cost charged for the dress might be spare change for a well-off buyer.
Hi, MimiRouth! Again, Ireland! This is fun to hear! I love that the little bobbles or nupps are named that. Thank you so much for writing. So glad you enjoyed this! Happy Sewing - or crocheting(?)!
You call them "popcorns", the bubbles in the pattern of the skirt. And it also has Irish crochet on the bottom. This 2-pieces-dress is absolutely stunning ❤ Thank you for showing it! I would love to see it on a person.
Hello, Cor3944, Thank you for the "popcorns" information and that you think it is from Ireland! This is such fun to hear. It IS stunning and I am so happy you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching and for commenting.
I hope to see and hear how you solved the belt area issues. I can't say I like the colors, but the dress is an interesting design.
Hello, Mary, Thank you for inquiring. I did leave the information in the area below the video. go to "...more" and it will come up. Thank you for watching and commenting.
This is interesting but so fast I can't tell how it works.
Hello, Skirtedgalleons, You are right! I might refilm this sometime soon. In the meantime, take the bobbin thread and thread it up through the needle and as if you are threading the machine backwards. Then you have only one thread, the bobbin thread. When you sew the dart, start at the dart tip and go backwards. Hope this makes sense. I will keep in mind that this video is not so good and will refilm it. Thanks!
Very interesting. Would love an update on how you fixed the belt area.
Hello, Skirtedgalleons, Yes! I will add this to the description box. Thank you for being in touch! Happy Sewing!

Thank you, Chibifanz, I’m glad it’s been helpful! Happy Sewing!
I love voile and also sateen. My favorite places to drool include Emma One-Sock and Cali Fabrics. I also love pure cotton, organic if available. I rather detest that stretch stuff. I mean! We don't know what it will do in our heirloom garments in 100 years. I have two rayon print crepe pieces that may be a century old. They were in my auntie's stash. She was born 1903. She and Mom would get them out and ooh and aah. Well, I am inspired to sew a simple kimono or beach cover-up -- not for the beach, but a style so simple that some woman who comes after me can make a vintage big-band-singer dress with nipped waist. Cali is in San Francisco, online and in Modesto. I used to shop in person. You never know what they will have. Some inspired high-end fabrics if you don't mind untoward colors. I love the deadstock shirtings. I just discovered Max Alexander (horrors!) and I suspect he may buy from them. He is a Californian, after all.
This is good information about fabric sources. Thank you! Happy Sewing! It sounds like you are going to be doing a LOT of sewing!
Just a heads up that we are going to want to change the outlines of suit jacket lapels. I've been wanting this for a time, and the pattern companies are slow. Someone I much admire gave an important speech awhile back, and I read that her exquisite navy blue pantsuit was by Chloe. Lately, jackets with that beautiful lapel are about all she wears. Could I just redraw the lapels of my suit jacket pattern that fits? And make a slightly smaller under-collar. The silk bow blouse is doable. Thank you for showing us all this!
Hi, MimiRouth, You can easily change the size of your patterned lapels just as you said! I will check out the Chloe pantsuits. They sound nice. Happy Sewing!
I shared you on Facebook! This is great! Thank you!
Thank you so much, MimiRouth! I deeply appreciate this. My channel is growing a lot because of kind gestures like this! Have a great day!
Ooh, this is so good! I spent a year in design school, so I could SLOWLY draft anything on paper, working from a book, with pencil and rulers -- but I still had not tried draping! I was not even sure what it was! I appreciate that you are experienced and mature, but nice to have chosen a model who is built more like a lot of us! And she is so brave! I know from my own professional sewing that we have to love our customers one at a time, get the best possible fit, and do it quickly enough to make a living! I love your happy but very serious way of explaining your work. No hand on hip, no hollering or dancing or talk about your cat or weather, etc. God bless you for sharing this solid gold knowledge!
Dear MimiRouth-t4d, Thank you for this heart felt comment. Yes, no hand on the hip! It's not easy to learn all of this if you do not have anyone to show or teach you! I am SO happy you enjoyed the tutorial. As you can see, I have a LOT of tutorials on patternmaking and sewing as well as other things to share. Welcome aboard! And, happy sewing!
Bernina 930. I love it! Bernie helped me edge-stitch on miles of snap tape at 3 a.m. for a children's wear designer. Bernie made a tailored "skirt-suit" for my petite mom in pastel tapestry fabric, matching blue linen blouse, beige cotton voile blouse with tucks, cream Swiss cotton cloque blouse, beige and white poly print blouse, denim jacket for husband with simulated beadwork embroidery on the turn-up cuffs, quilts and doll clothes. Now I am weary of fast fashion. It is time to sew for Mimi. (Well, dear Sally, you asked!) When I considered turning this machine in for one that stitches airplanes flying toward each other, I got several passionate sermons telling me this would be total insanity! I listened.
HA! A LOT of sewing! You are a good listener!😂 Best wishes!
This is such a treasure in a time when almost nobody remembers their "homec" classes and we actually have a commercial pattern for the same gathered skirt I made in 7th grade in about '54 and 4-H in '56. I have past lives as a seamstress in Paris. As a tiny child I watched my mom make ruffled sheer curtains for 4 windows plus a bay window. She made my Easter dresses and a classic red wool coat fit for a princess. I recently read "Sidonia's Threads" and the two sequels. I was thrilled to read about beautifully made real-life clothes like yours. When I married, I bought a polyester organza dress for $400. It was costume and not heirloom! Thank you, Sally, for sharing your beautiful work!
Dear MimiRouth, Thank you for this wonderful message. I am so happy you enjoyed watching this and I am SO happy hearing of your experiences and the red coat! I am not familiar with the books you mentioned but am going to look into this. Thank you for that, too! Happy Sewing! 💝

I just discovered your channel. Wow. You are an excellent teacher. I watched the how to make a sloper playlist with Morgan as the model. I am looking forward to learning more from you. I have a request - I am super large and fitting myself is quite the challenge. If you ever have the opportunity, I’d appreciate seeing you fit a RTW size 32 or thereabouts. I dream of making myself beautiful clothes but fit has always been a stumbling block. ❤
Hello, Miriam, Welcome aboard! I am thrilled you are happy with my teaching and tutorials. I would be so happy to work with a larger person. When the pandemic started I stopped working with models and am not sure when I will have the opportunity to do this again but will keep your request in mind. If you watch my tutorial on the pant sloper, in the description box I mention sites that can take your measurements and make slopers for you. I have also seen companies that can do the same with patterns, or so I think I have seen this. This situation may be helpful for you. Best wishes and Happy Sewing!
Don’t know if you will see this comment, but I have a question on fit. It looks like the sloper has some “drag folds” under the bust - from the outside bust apex to center front. Am I being super picky and that is acceptable? I have always thought (perhaps incorrectly), that those folds need to be corrected for.
Helo, Miriam, Yes, those are drag lines! I have looked carefully and I believe it is mainly that she is not standing straight. If she raised her shoulders, the drag lines would disappear. I think she was tired and I did not notice everything and should have walked away from her to get a better view before talking about it. Good catch and good point! I am glad you brought this up - thank you! Happy Sewing!

Hello, Skirtedgalleons! SO glad this was helpful to you. I am not clear on what you mean by "forward shoulder". Do you mean your back is somewhat rounded so the shoulder is forward of the body? I learned this method from a professional pattern maker many years ago and I think it's the best sleeve method I have ever seen. It has NEVER failed me and I am happy it has not failed you, either! Thanks for letting me know!
@@SewWithSally Yes, my shoulder is rotated forward and I have a rounded back. Usually with sleeve drafting the sleeve comes out with the shoulder point up and down and I need to adjust it. Your method gave the correct hang of the sleeve. I'm fine tuning it now for a sloper and then I can't wait to make some blouses. Thanks again!
@@skirtedgalleons Thank you for clariflying and I am SO happy this method is good for you! Surely sewing for yourself will be much more fun knowing the outcome will be better. Thanks!
