Honeybees Saved | Bees Dumped Like Trash Roadside
I have two cement hives trying them out. This winter western cape was wet and my bees left as water goes through lid or it was condensation. Opened up to moldy frames . So this year i will paint them and put steel lid on them. The bees do like them , badger proof , fire proof but very heavy and you cant manipulate bees.
Interesting that the water was able to permeate into the hive. I have not experienced this yet, but I have also not had the quantity of rain you experienced in the Cape this year.
Think it's a nice to have but not practical
I agree. Something I didn't mention in the video is at least with the wooden Langstroth, there is an abundance of spares, and everything is the same size. I have seen with these Bunka Hives that if you need a new lid or a super, they can be difficult to acquire at certain times.
You not doing to bad for a old topple caring the super with the lid
Thanks Hannes, that lid and Super are about 30 kg empty. It is just impractical to do hive maintenance on many hives.
Sacking, cut to size will make a good inner cover in this case.
Yeah Mark, They recommended something of that sort on their site. Gonna have to make a plan. Thanks for watching.
Brilliant! Thank-you for this review.
Thank you for watching.
What is the taim this trap out fainly sir
We struggled to restrict the bees to just one exit and so this took us a while, but once you have them only using the exit with the cone you must leave it for 28 days. Thanks for watching.
O did you see a queen?
No we did not spot spot her.
Hi Stuart Can I ask few questions When was this removal done Reason I ask is yes queens do stop laying sometimes but colonys that size there should be some brood Did you see any queen cells maybe they replaced her or she swarmed an the new queen did not make it back from her mating flight But keep us posted I would give them a frame of all stages of brood from a nother colony just for in case If there is no queen they can replace her Nice video and explanation
Hi Hannes. This was just before winter, so I suspect it was a seasonal slowdown, but that was an assumption. We did not see the queen so it is possible she was no longer around as well. The frame of all stages of brood works well, I have used this in the past too, great recommendation. Thanks for watching.
I´m fascinated how easy it can be. In Germany we have one million other frame sizes. I hope the hive beetles will only come to us in 30 years...many greetings from Germany ;)
In South Africa all the beekeepers seem to stick to the standards when it comes to hives. Hive beetles while very present tend not to be too much of a bother, the bees tend to take care of them. Thanks for watching.
Fascinating journey - such a complex 'world' on its own. Thank you for sharing the information.
Glad you enjoyed, you in particular know which hive this is. Thanks for watching.
Oh how I've missed these videos! Going to binge catch up.
Hey Tash. Welcome back to the channel!
Bee hives nearby seem to 'advertise' for new members bringing gifts of honey by dispersion of there pheramone at the entrance.
Yeah, that was my thoughts too. This would mean the swarm that landed to a certain extent, depending on the gifts they are bearing, will be accepted into the established hive.
Morning Sunshine on the entrances and higher boxes are the best lure. 👍🏻👍🏻Well done.
Thanks Mark, those are two tips I am going to use in a swarm lure experiment we are setting up. Thanks for watching.
Were are you from in SA?
In Johannesburg.
Would love to come and visit you
What an incredible thing to witness! 🙌
Thanks for watching.
Funny old thing, I have one moving in this AM in the KZN Midlands, snow on the Berg and all
Wow!
Wow. They must have been desperate for a new digs. Nice a warm here in Jozi this morning.
Nice and chilly bees
I would like to point out that honey and pollen bread are⁶ only survival food for getting through winter and they can not feed larvae with it Your reproductive food is fresh pollen and nectar that is used for feeding larvae In winter the feeding bees supplement the low protein levels of pollen with protein stored in their body fat That is why it's important not to stimulate the queen to lay with a thin sugar syrup because the feeding bees will deplete the protein in their bodies and this can lead to colony collapse if done continuously for 3 brood cycles It is only the feeder bees in a hive that can consume pollen for production of royal jelly and worker bee and drone jelly Yes they feed all the bees in the hive
Thanks, Hannes, this is so informative and has led me to read up more on the use of resources gathered by bees. I found this article from Jamie Ellis at Florida University that goes into detail but is an easy read. edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/IN868 - Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Very nice and educational
Thanks for watching.
Thank-you.
Thanks for watching.
Wax moth,.. chicken feed!
Yeah, fishing bait.
this video blew my mind 🤯 i had no idea India or China had that many bee hives 🫢
Thanks for watching.
Fascinating! Thank-you so much. 🐝
Thanks for watching!
It was nice to work with Stuart again We learned a lot and had good laughs Coffing of all the dust Thanks Stuart we will do this again Hopefully a easier one the next time but we do what we need to do for the bees
Thanks again Hannes, always great working with you, I learn something new every time. Looking forward to the next one.
So cool!
Thanks for watching.
New addition to the sanctuary 🌻🐝🌸🫶
Thanks for watching
That is such a treat to see! It’s an enormous swarm 😮
Thanks for watching
Please try putting the Brood frames above the vacuumed bees, not below. Maybe turn the vacuumed box upside down and then place the Brood chambers above the bee's. Surely they will follow the warmth and desire to build new comb by moving up into your prepared Brood frames if they are at the top. Maybe a frame holder at right-angle across and in-between the frames to stabilise the bottom of the frames during transport. Thank you.
You are 100% right, the problem is with the design of the bee vacuum. The supers on each side of the brood create a large cavity where the bees cluster. We are redesigning this at the moment by reducing that space and can then do as you have suggested. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
Wasn't a failed job the bees are out! Just ad the field bees to a other colony In winter a queengard works in winter but in summer the drones can block it if it's a big colony Nice video
Yeah the removal was a success but could not add another colony to my apiary. I find a good trap out can give a strong colony if all goes to plan. Thanks for watching.
I'm currently doing a trap out and also placed my trapbox separate from the cone. Keep thumbs please!
I have done it that way quite a few times with great success. Most important is to make sure the cone is the only way in and out of the nest, it will work perfectly.
I found that Steel Wool works great to block entrance holes. It is bendable, and the bees can't chew through it. Good luck and thanks for the great videos.
I have used steel wool before it works well. In this video we used the fabufill we had from previos removal. It also works well and I have lots of it.
hi, amazing video! If that was A.M Capensis they would have laid clone eggs and could make a queen.
Yeah, it is pretty amazing they can do that. Great for the beekeeper as it makes it a lot easier to correct mistakes with hives.
Will the African honey bee not do this? Only the Cape honey bee?
The Apis Mellifera Capensis found in the Western Cape can make a queen from an egg laid by a worker, which is unusual for insects. The Apis Mellifera Scutellata, the African Honey Bee needs a fertilized egg from a queen to make a new queen.
Ive seen 2 tipes of capensis, one thats parasitic and will lay eggs in other capensis of scutelata hives. And ones that seem to not do it. Not sure
The research shows that not all workers of the Capensis can lay diploid, female eggs, which is required for a queen. Most workers of the Capensis can only lay haploid, male eggs. But some have what they call Thelytoky, controlled by a recessive gene, which is a type of parthenogenesis, the ability to grow an embryo directly from an egg without fertilisation, and is the absence of mating but still being able to produce female offspring. This can be found in other insects but is rare in animals. I find this fascinating as I am only aware of it in the Capensis and it makes me wonder why.
So if there had been a queen guard on the box then the queen would have stayed and not swarmed?
She would have been forced to stay in the box and naturally reverted back to laying as she would seen the hive was still thriving.
I add a queen guard on my swarm traps once a swarm has moved in and on boxes used during removals. It greatly helps preventing abscondence.
I used to do it all the time. But you do need to get back to the box to take it off at some point so I have stopped. I find it can get blocked with dead drones if left on too long.
Once again, bee-rilliant!
Thanks for watching!
what's in the bottle?
It's a 1:1 Sugar Syrup. Only use white sugar, because brown sugar gives them diarrhoea. Thanks for watching.
Well done guys Flip I get nervous looking at you Get a positioning belt then secure the ladder and then use the positioning belt to secure your self then you can hang back and both your arms are free
I think this one looks higher than it is, but it is till gonna hurt if we fall. Thanks for watching.
The girls know how to make use of space That box is completely full Yes a removal like that you are very lucky if the combs do not brake off Well done
If you catch these early enough then they can sometimes come out easily, but this one had been there for some time and the bees had used every bit of space it had to offer. Thanks for watching.
Once again, brilliant. Thank-you 🙌
Thanks for watching!
Hi dude! Nice removal. Where are you located. Im in Prince Alfred hamlet. Western Cape. I got 2 hives and am a young beekeeper. Im looking to do small swarm removals
Thanks for watching. I'm located in Joburg, so a bit of a way from you unfortunately, but I am happy to answer any questions you have.
Smoke boys smoke😅
Yeah. Had a comment on a previous video asking me why we use so much smoke. Thanks for commenting. 👍
Is that for your brood or suppers
Cut in half for supers. I have been doing the wave cut for brood. But think a full sheet is still better.
Well done guys Taking the brood of under the honey crown is good practice because then you don't get honey running over your brood and suffocating it You did well even with out your roatery drill
Thanks for watching. These are old removals. So still need to use your practice of the vac box under the brood box.
Day in the life of a South African beekeeper.
As dangerous as they can be, still love working with them. Thanks for watching.
Lovely study and grafics thank you. This is very similar to our summer and winter pattern in Germany, near the Alps. So I presume you are at altitude with cold winter nights. Was the new Brood development on the east (morning sun) or the West Side? What direction do you face your entrances? 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for watching. This Apiary is about 1000m above sea level and only goes to a minimum of 4 degrees Celsius, so it is not extremely high or cold. It is interesting that you talk about the sun direction as I am sure it has an impact on maintaining the warmth of the colony, I do see my hives that have sun early in the morning are most active from early but tend to be less active in the late afternoon. With this hive the entrance faces East, and in the apiary, the hives face various directions we consider shade and sun for the seasons when placing them. Summers can be very hot. Thanks for commenting and your support I am very interested in beekeepers from around the world and their practices.
Great video but why is the gentleman smoking the bees constantly
Thanks for watching. Our bees on this site in the lowveld in South Africa are pretty aggressive. We keep the smoker going to just keep the pheromones at bay and that way the bees are easier to work. The last short we posted shows how they can attack when not smoked sufficiently. Appreciate your comment. Thanks.
Thank you. This was a great video
Thanks for watching.
This is absolutely brilliant! I love the comparison showing the positive changes. Well done! #bees
Thanks for watching!
Eventually all the European bees in the Americas will be like this thanks to scientists and greedy people
I agree 100% with you, if humans mess with the natural world the natural world tends to bite back. There is one positive, we don't have to deal with varroa mites as the Scutellata Sub Species can manage these pests without the beekeeper having to intervene. Thanks for watching.
Bee-utiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
