What is cut and cover method?
The T2D Project tunnels will be constructed using tunnel boring machines (TBMs), except for short lengths at each end of the tunnels where the roadway is too shallow for the effective use of TBMs.
For these short lengths, the tunnels will be constructed from the surface using cut and cover methodology.
Cut and cover areas are large open trenches that will be:
➡️ cut deep enough so that the TBMs can be launched or retrieved at the required gradient
➡️ reinforced with retaining walls and props or roof slabs to ensure stability.
Watch the video to learn more about cut and cover method.

What is a Tunnel Boring Machine?
Просмотров 647Месяц назад
The T2D Project tunnels will be constructed using tunnel boring machines (TBMs) which are complex and massive pieces of machinery. They are manufactured to suit the ground conditions for the project, and will progress about 8-10m per day. In September, the T2D Project signed the contract to purchase three TBMs from world-leading manufacturer Herrenknecht. The first of three TBMs is expected to ...

What's a laydown area?
Просмотров 3943 месяца назад
A 'laydown area' is where we will temporarily store equipment and supplies for use in construction. For the T2D Project, laydown areas will be established for both the northern and southern tunnels. TBMs for the southern tunnels will launch from the southern laydown area, which is located on the western side of South Road in Tonsley/Clovelly Park between Tonsley Boulevard and Norrie Avenue. Ever wondered what a tunnel boring machine looks like up close and how it works? T2D's Senior Engineering Manager Frances McNulty walks us through the model TBM, currently stationed at the Community Information Centre in Hilton. Tunnel Boring Machines are very large and complex pieces of machinery. The TBMs we will use to construct the T2D tunnels will be around 100m in length and 15m in diamet...

Why is understanding ground conditions important before tunnelling?
Просмотров 1315 месяцев назад
A considerable amount of planning and investigative work has to be carried out before main construction can begin for the T2D Project. A big part of this is what's called ground investigations. Ground investigations are crucial to the success of the T2D Project and excavation and lining of the tunnels, helping us understand the nature of the ground and how it will behave during construction of ...

T2D Project - Shaping the future of South Australia
This should be completed before the State Bicentenary in 2036. 😁
As Liam Neeson would say. "Quickly, Quickly. There's no time!" (Yes, I'm looking forward to using these tunnels.) 😊
Its good that the govt is addressing this. (I just wish it gets done quickly.)
no it won't. look up induced demand. car dependency is killing us
induced demand look it up
good urban design is not building massive roads everwhere. enjoy the induced demand
Is it possible to re-use the TBM's later for other projects like a rail tunnel?
The TBMs to be used for T2D will be recovered when they have finished tunnel construction as they are subject to a “buy back” scheme from the TBM supplier. There are several factors that affect whether a TBM will be re-used at the end of a project for a subsequent project. Various parts of TBMs do tend to suffer considerable wear in excavating and constructing any tunnel project and their useful remaining life may not be sufficient to make refurbishment and re-use worthwhile.
@@T2DProject Makes sense. Thanks
Why isn't this a railway? The volume of traffic supported looks like it could well be equally well supported by a significantly cheaper single bore two track railway.
One of the best things about this expressway, unlike toll roads in other places, is that the normal South Road will still exist. This means if a section of the expressway needs to be closed, the traffic will still have somewhere else to go.
it will arguably be the safest tunnel in the world. naturally because it is the newest and will have the highest standards applied.
Why in every 3D illustration/ video, do you always eliminate the section from the Cross Rd bridge to the tram bridge? No one will show the residents of Glandore / Black Forest a reasonable inducation of what this section will look like.
Oh wow I'm impressed
Will there be traffic lights on the on ramps like Melbourne?
most likely not since the traffic level on the new expressway will be far lower than melbournes. it could possibly have them in 20 or so years but if the traffic engineers knew what they were doing they should never have to implement them 😊
@@archiecoppola6854 yeah hopefully not. I thought I saw them in the video but it’s probably something else.
Looks like the West Thebarton Hotel is on the way out. Or am I interpreting the graphics wrong?
Thanks now I can’t go rock climbing and my support worker can’t go to her OTR😡
Looking forward to driving the full length of this project. Also hope to see some more rail improvements in the future too.😄
That's nice, what about the highways in the rest of the state? Last I heard the bill for repairs was $60 billion and climbing!
Yippee wen can we start paying Tolls?
There are no plans for the T2D motorway to be a toll road.
I was actually researching about this project. I was impressed with how ambitious it is, but then I looked at what the other states are doing. Compared to QLD, NSW, and VIC, our project is like digging a little hole in comparison haha
I know I'm only dreaming, but when the South Road tunnels are done, I'd love to see one of these dig a tunnel for freight trains from just south of Mitcham, all the way through to Callington. (Sigh... a man can dream)🤔😁
And once they're done with digging a rail tunnel through the hills, they should then use it to create one from the bottom of the south eastern freeway, to link up with the north/south corridor so you can seamlessly transition between the two without any lights. Then a tunnel to finally get some rail between the Adelaide Airport and Adelaide Station. Perhaps after all that they could even make the Adelaide Station a through station and finally get trains to the eastern suburbs. Maybe by the end of the century Adelaide might finally have a sensible transport system.
@@EngiocGames Cool Ideas. With the Airport though, I'd run the underground railway straight up the center of Adelaide, with a station under the Central Market or Victoria square. Then I'd split the track with a lime out east, and a loop around to the current station, and one at Rundle Mall, near Pultney Street.😁
@@EngiocGameswell they were considering a tram to Adelaide airport at one point
Pretty sure I saw the same video about a week ago. Has something changed in the plan, or is this just a re-post?
Great
I love Induced demand!
I would like to know were the re routing of vehicles are being put in place, i have rung a number of times and they say they dont know... rubbish
HeysenTunnels were first.
All images are at least one year old…show something new, maybe in 2040
Caring about the community, such utter hypocrisy. My wife and I live in Blackwood and suffer from ear piecing freight train noise 24/7. How in 2024 the ATC and their clients can get away with such blatant disregard for the "community". The EPA do nothing, they are useless.. Please add your comments, Thank you.
Hello. What company makes this boring machine?
As usual, it is difficult to get all the information from these videos. They need to be slowed down and have Voice over commentary. My main question is how do people coming east up Raglang Avenue from Marion Road turn right to get Home along south Road to suburb such as Saint Marys Darlington and Flagstaff Hill etc. do I have to go into Edward Street drive up to Winston Avenue turn right back down into Price Avenue to South Road.. What do other people think about this?
You would take the link road from the new Raglan Avenue roundabout to the Edward Street traffic lights to turn right onto South Road
If the lights remain at Furness Ave what has been achieved apart from shifting the lights to the South side of Hungry Jacks ? Will work beautifully if the traffic flow is the same as the video - but fail miserably with the actual South Road traffic volume!!!
Yup I just cannot see this working either
there is a Housing crisies in SA and all this Idiot thinks of is ...Highway ...yeah another highway lets spend $$$$$ we dont have ( ooops we can by making police speed cameras pull over more people ) this Idiot of a prime minster has No clue how to run the state
I'm all for aligning Raglan Ave and Edward St. But there are new traffic lights at Price St. This is just moving the Raglan Ave lights to the South a bit.
Agreed. This is wasting all of the gains made by removing the dogleg.
lights at price should only only be the relocated pedestrian
Agreed. All traffic entering Castle Plaza should be pushed to the side streets to prevent stopping the flow along South Road.
It's just lazy to put traffic lights at every intersection
what we need is better public transport, an actual real metro train system and proper bike infrastructure. instead we get this 15 billion pile of shit that'll only make it more car obsessed
this project doesn't even have separated bike lanes
Wouldn't a train be more efficient?
Shut up boomer
Where's the exit to sir Donald bradman drive / airport going to be?
At the exit to Sir Donald Bradman Drive? Where else would it be???
Curious, is the current demo work that's been done to the western side of South Rd, North bound to Celtic Ave complete or is there more to come?
It’ll be ready in 2050 and cost of 20 billions…and Mali will be happy in some retirement village, wondering where is ANZAC day
only talk, nothing more
Can you PLEASE make sure to include signage around KEEPING LEFT UNLESS OVERTAKING!!?? This is main scourge on our roads and is the number one frustration of most drivers. Please and thank you!
Nice.
just know this costs 15 billion: with a thenth of the cost it's possible to build an extensive bikenetwork with countless bikebridges over all our dangerous roads, allowing people to bike to places again. Instead of creating more car traffic, this would get rid of cars because people wont use their cars to go to work, school, doctors, shops... Less conjestion = lower travelling times and better air quality everywhere. this would make every car trip 20 minutes shorter, people healthier because of the better air quality and the fact that they can bike to places again with only 1.5 BILLION. That's another 13.5 billion that can be spent on parks, public transport and more effective upgrades to roads. T2D howerver: only torrens to darlington 20 minutes shorter, more cars worse air quality, and still no way to do anything without a car.
Yeah but I don't want to be stuck on south road for 2 hours each way tryna get from elizabeth to victor harbour
yes, if there is bike infrastructure, everyone that just needs to travel inside adelaide has the option to bike, which will get rid most car trips on south road.@@funnybunny230
You know what would be a nice? A bike path that bypasses cross road towards Crafers Bikepath up the SE Freeway. Because on Cross road you'll either get hit by a truck or screamed at for holding traffic up when the painted "bike lane" runs out. Useless planners.
Selfish of me I know, but I would like weekly updates on where the TBMs are in relation to surface streets. It would be fun to keep track of the progress that way. 😊
This construction will take at least 10 years….the governments are changing, money is running dry…just wondering
Thats just the nature of any mega project, isn't it?
My biggest complaint to the T2D channel. This is RUclips, not a boardroom. Try to move away from the twinkly music, text and graphics that make you feel good, and do more informative videos. I know you can do them, I've seen them. Also I think you need to take the bull by the horns and answer some of the criticisms people put in the comment section. Pretending they don't exist and ignoring them makes it look like you can't justify your work. True you can't change some peoples mind, but don't just lay down and accept the lies.
