Tunnel Safety Systems

The T2D Project will have a range of technology-based information, communications and control systems incorporated in the motorway, known as intelligent transport systems (ITS).
These systems will actively manage traffic flows and improve safety, as well as helping to provide better travel time reliability - both in the tunnels and in open motorway sections.
ITS will be used to coordinate an appropriate response to maximise motorist safety in the event of an incident. This could include reducing lane speeds, closing lanes, providing warnings to motorists via overhead VMS, or closing a tunnel and diverting traffic to other parts of the road network.
