Tunnel boring machine operation

  • Ever wondered how tunnel boring machines (TBMs) work?
The cutterhead rotates to excavate soil and rock (known as spoil) from the tunnel face while conveyors transfer the spoil away from the tunnel face and out of the tunnels. Precast concrete tunnel lining segments are installed to form the tunnel walls, and then hydraulic cylinders press against them to move the TBM forward.
Our TBMs will be some of the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere, and they’ll be designed to suit the ground conditions for the Project.
Up to 20 specially trained people will operate the TBMs from inside, at depths of up to 30m below ground.

Selfish of me I know, but I would like weekly updates on where the TBMs are in relation to surface streets. It would be fun to keep track of the progress that way. 😊
