NEW FISHROOM TOUR! - Rainbowfish, Plecos & More
It's been awhile and many changes have occurred in the fishroom over the past year. I am sad that I couldn't share the wonderful species that we recently moved on from, but hope you enjoy the fish we currently have. If you have any questions on any of the species in the video let me know if the comments. Some of the species in the fishroom include various rainbowfish, pseudomugil species, corydoras and plecos. Some of my favorite species in the fishroom include Chilatherina sp Upper Tor, Melanotaenia sp Kali Tawa and Hypancistrus L236 and L333.

Species Spotlight - Pseudomugil Luminatus
Просмотров 12 тыс.3 года назад
Just a quick look at my favorite blue eye, Pseudomugil luminatus. It is an attractive little species that entered the hobby around 2011 under the name sp. Red Neon. It was misidentified as Paskai which is a distinct and separate species. This is one of the many species that entered the hobby from the Timika region thanks to the efforts of Hans Evers and Jeffry Christian. Though not a true rainb...

    Great video and amazing how you have so many projects!! I’m considering kali tawa for my 40B river tank that houses stiphodon gobies. Are the kali tawa peaceful with slower fish and do they keep to the top while feeding? Wondering if they’d eat all the algae wafers for the gobies at the bottom 😅 Thx for any insight!

    would it be ok to keep 5 of these in a 29 gallon planted with 15 furcata and 9 gertrude?

    • @HoonAquatics
      @HoonAquatics Год назад

      It certainly CAN be done. I probably would stick with one pseudomugil species and tailor their tank to the specific species. Furcata generally need neutral to hard water to really thrive, while Luminatus come from tannic swamps in Timika. Though they can adapt to live with each other, I probably wouldn't personally. Gertrudae come from a wide range of habitats, so they are probably more adaptable. If you were to do a multi species tank, I would do Luminatus and Gertrudae because they are both a bit more gentle in nature. Furcata get bigger and much more robust and strong swimmers. Hope you tank turns out well. My opinions aren't the end-all-be-all, so if you do experiment with all 3 pseudomugil species and it works long term, I'd love to hear about it. Some floating plants may be appreciated by the Luminatus and Gertrudae when the furcata are in full breeding mode.

      I am not currently breeding boesemani and probably will not resume breeding this species due to it's slow growth. There are a couple great sellers of Boesemani if you're in the US. I would highly recommend the Aves Creek or Lake Uter locations that sport amazingly intense orange. The Village of Aytinjo boesemani are the same collection point as the Lake Uter fish, but later generations of this bloodline are not nearly as intense in coloration as the Uter's that Gilbert Maebe brought to a convention in 2014 where Gary first picked up the Uters

    I have six Pseudomugil furcatus and they behave differently for me. they kind of dart around and assert territory. I have seen videos of wild Pseudomugil endemic to Australia living in very clear fast moving current. They seem to have a wide tolerance in regards to water parameters. • @HoonAquatics
      @HoonAquatics 2 года назад

      @@pt109lover At least with Papuan native pseudomugils, habitats are actively threatened from environmental damage caused by humans. Maintaining pure lines can help keep some of these at least maintained in captivity. I don't think Australian pseudomugils are at risk like their neighbors to the north. I didn't say I advised against it, since your hobby is your own space. But I don't think I would recommend it from my personal taste

      @@HoonAquatics that’s really thoughtful. I see where you’re coming from. A lot of the hobby is predicated on “man made fish” IMO and I really like how you acknowledge the hobby is different for different people. I like the idea of preserving original lines. If I come across rare ones I’ll for sure now breed a few strait lines. I do think these fish have crazy potential for beautiful crosses though 😄

    Nice Video! I recently got some Aves Creek Boesemani Rainbows that are around the size of the smaller ones you showed frequently swimming around. Mine have slightly white lips only at the tips and sometimes have a white hanging scale like the boesemani you showed at 8:12 thats at the top of the tank. Is that mouth rot or just a normal injury?

    • @HoonAquatics
      @HoonAquatics 2 года назад

      Rainbows bump into a lot of things. Though it is a minor injury and can heal by itself, it can also lead to infection. Not usually a huge deal. They are not a particularly easy rainbowfish to raise due to lower egg yields and high female ratio produced. Due to this, Gary and I have been working with temps closer to 75 to 78f for hatching and raising (which then slows growth). I don't remember how old they were in the video

We should just use the transliteration and call it freshwater seaweed. As a science teacher, I think It's a super cool plant. If you don't already know, it is the prothallus of a fern that refuses to produce eggs and sperm (the job of a normal prothallus) Essentially, it never grows up into a fern. Instead it makes branches, which can break off and start a new plant. It is thought that all of it (globally) is just a bunch of clones from some original delinquent prothallus that refused to grow up.😀 Cheers, Chris
