This River Was MAGIC! Fly Fishing / Euro Nymphing Down Under
Fly fishing for late season river trout can be some of the best fishing of the year! Mainland Australia has some exceptional fly fishing at times, so while some head off to NZ or Tasmania to get their thrills, I like to enjoy some of the excellent local fishing opportunities. Join me and a mate as we explore a magnificent piece of water in North East Victoria....

    I have the Click reel 456 champagne,and gonna buy a HD 2109 rod. How long could you cast with this 230grains trout spey scandi line?

    • @PeachyFlyFishing
      @PeachyFlyFishing Месяц назад

      Hi, casting distance is going to very much depend on your casting ability and the flies you are casting, But for small flies, say nymphs or small wets, I'd estimate maybe 75 feet or so. With the skagit head, plus a 70gr floating tip I have been able to cast longer than that, out to maybe 90 feet on occasion but I wouldn't say it's easy. It's only a 10'9" rod so you're not going to get the longer distances that you would with a big spey rod. You can see some footage of me casting and fishing with this rig in one of my other videos on the channel, search for "Trout Spey Tactics". That might give you a better idea of range. Thanks for watching, hope you found it helpful! :)

      @@PeachyFlyFishing Nice,bro,I consider myself a intermediate caster, usually use my 7'6 3wt SH rod ,reach 62ft with double haul. I hope this longer little rod will make a difference,80ft maybe a challenge,75ft is a great distance!

    • @PeachyFlyFishing
      @PeachyFlyFishing Месяц назад

      Bear in mind, distance in spey casting is different to overhead casting....if you were overhead casting with this rod could probably get a fair bit more distance with good technique. :)

    Yeah what a conundrum! Looks like that's the 1 rod for that size your water you're on. I'm liking the 10' 4 wt for an all around stream/river rod. But that too has its limitations. 🤷‍♀🤷‍♀

    • @PeachyFlyFishing
      @PeachyFlyFishing Месяц назад

      Yep for sure, everyones needs will be slightly different. A 10' #4 would be a good all round rod for bigger water and bigger fish I reckon, the only thing I'm personally not mad about with 4 weights is the tippet protection for nymphing - I fish 7X and 8X usually and a 2 or 3 weight is a little bit easier to protect super light tippet on. Also for casting lighter nymphs on the euro rig a lighter rod is a bit better. But the extra range of a 10 footer, and the extra weight of a #4 to cast streamers and dry dropper rigs a bit easier would be a nice benefit too.... ;)

    For me, humbly without offending, in that situation of still waters and small spaces it is better to apply a different strategy that puts the fish less on alert. The line coming and going puts them on alert. Or I would use a very long leader, 5 to 6 meters, or a nylon line, which are transparent and do not alter that type of water. Very small tipet nymphs, very fine, but the most important thing is that they would not go over the line. I think that with that in a place so loaded with fish, more catches would be obtained. Sincerely. Comentarios

      @PeachyFlyFishing 2 месяца назад

      Thanks! Yes I agree, your strategy is spot on. From memory I was using a very long leader (around 5.5m) and very fine tippet (7x), it was still very hard to catch the fish except up in the moving water. There were quite a lot of people who had been walking along the river, a few fishing, the fish were already very alert, but in the end I just needed to fish better to catch them! Thanks for watching. :)

    For streams like this would a 3wt 6’6 with WF1F and a x5 leader 4lb tippet be ok?? Cos my other set up is a 5/6wt 9” WF5SS with a 2-3x and 8lb tippet but I’ve got that set up for the big boys at bullen merri so streams like this it’s overkill .. or am I better off buying a whole new set up? I’ve only ever used the smaller set up in the salt chasing baits (yakka and Tommy’s and such)

      Yes you would certainly get away with the smaller setup on this stream, for sure. I have a couple of short lightweight dry fly rods, but these days I mostly prefer to fish longer and lighter rods for trout wherever there is enough room to use them, primarily for the ability to hold more line off the water, fish longer leaders, and thus improve drifts. But in really tight cover and close range the shorter rods can be easier to fish with. Shorter rods can also be a little more accurate, if they are not too soft action. The 5-6 weight you're right it's probably overkill for this stream, but you could make it work if you wanted to. Still, it's always fun buying a new rod right?? 😆

      @@PeachyFlyFishing might have to sneak a 2/3wt 9” on my wish list haha .. I’m only just getting into fly fishing streams I’ve always fished lakes and the salt with streamers and nimphs so dry and wet flies is wat I’m learning now .. I don’t have any fancy gear it’s no orvis or nothing haha it’s just gotrue and ssuoyailang stuff off wish and Temu it’s not to bad but can def the difference to my 1 expensive one

    Does “Central West” mean Oberon district, or up towards Orange/Mudgee etc?

    I notice sometimes you use the reel to bring in a fish, rather than stripping line by hand. Can you take me through when and why please? Love your work.

      Thanks Geoff! Sometimes I like to put a fish on the reel, particularly if it's a bigger fish or if I am fishing quite light tippet. The main reason being, the reel drag (if it's properly set) does a better job of preventing a break-off if the fish takes off, particularly when you get it close to the net. :)

    Lovely video. How do you put slack into your cast. TIA

      Thanks Martin! Putting slack into casts, that’s a tricky thing to do well. Very long leaders (18-20 feet), ending in very fine tippet (usually 7x depending on the size of the fly) so that the leader does not fully transmit the power to the fly. Then it’s down to casting techniques, not overpowering the delivery casts, negative curve casts, and angling the cast down to cast part of the leader on to the water first, so that the final part of the tippet collapses. It’s a little hard to describe in words, but I hope that is helpful. :)

    Best dropper leader tying method yet. Simple, effective, and a straight forward method of reducing tangles. Thank you for sharing.
