Rebalancing FE4 - The "Cannon" Pairings
I know that song in the section describing the avatars was "telephone number" by junko ohashi, but where is thag remix from?
Can i get the song playing at 5 mins
Love this little series.
Sounds like Finn is your FE4 avatar. Joking aside I guess Oifaye would be closest to that role. Especially if he's guiding Sigurd thru out gen 1 Damn, should have waited a few minutes before commenting lol
Having just replayed sacred stones here are some thoughts into the void. I had a very full supply at the end of the game. Solution is to play at higher difficulty potentially forcing the use of the higher tier weapons i saved and was never willing to use. Alternatively remove them entirely from the game. This would force a complete change in enemy character classes to have more balance between the mages, melee and bows to keep threats in existence. I never used any of the stat consumables because it felt like a waste unless a character was full promoted since otherwise maybe the level ups would have given it to me. The movement range boots especially huge fomo. If i give it to someone who has high movement they pull further ahead, if i give it to someone low, which one? Two options, one is to make exclusively for creature campaign or just remove them entirely. Promotion items. It was annoying playing around them. Who do i give it to, do i wait until 20 or just do it right away? Which class do i pick? Make units promote automatically. Level 15 maybe. Now it isnt about an item that i may not see for ages but just proper xp management (this doesn't solve the healing only classes, make staff the worst weapon, but with two reach) Classes, well your video HELPS but when playing through "blind" since i havent played in a decade, i knew i got characters but not what class they all would be and wanted to have class at least one of every class. I enjoy recruiting and having an expanding class. Solution could be allowing for class changes at will. Maybe a gold cost. Maybe one map i play with 3 rogues picking all the locks and another where i have 3 swordmasters going mid. Stats right now are random which means that you end up with some characters feeling better than others and it being different based on your playthrough. I dont know if that's a problem or not, but id like to see at least two stats going up each level, not counting hp which should be on its own guaranteed scaling to prevent a complete garbage number. I had multiple levels where i got no stat or a single point in skill on characters it didnt matter for. Each time it happened it felt so bad. If i played on emulator id abuse save states to force not garbage level ups on at least one or two characters cough cough. I dont give a darn if the game is easy without that, it feels bad regardless. Throw back to the supply and weapons, getting to the end and being essentially forced to use the S weapons just because nothing else wanted to do any damage was aggravating. Give us a supply screen before that please. Better yet just say hey due to the sacred stones power we can damage the big bad and forget about the weapons. Dragon kid. When do use use her? Where do you get more weapons? Huge fomo to the point i never used her. Also she contributed next to nothing to the story. Getting her at level one is also weird because it makes you think she would be weak which further pushes you to not use her even though she is very capable. Shes a dragon, she always should have claws and a breathe attack. Make her a fixed level with limited attacks PER MAP. She can attack that many people before she gets tired but you can always use her and you knows shes strong because you get her with either max level or level na or something like that. Still somewhat balanced by having low movement so you have to either go slow or ferry her around. That being said. I still love the sacred stones. If youre still reading this, stay happy healthy and hydrated.
I play Fire Emblem like I play Pokémon. Find my favorites and use them til the end
honestly I don't think paladins are bad, I treat them more as a safety net in case you mess something up. Ideal rescue units early on since they can handle its debuffs quite well.
13:57 thats not true oifey does edit: oh
I don't say this lightly, the analysis you provide goes so much further beyond what is typically done in these sorts of videos. Most will analyze gameplay elements as a question of their application or narrative from a perspective of morality or a vague term such as quality, but you're exploring things from such a dynamic and expansive perspective that incorporates very literary ideas like the reader's expectations of genre and how that affects the way they perceive events or the nature of perspective and presentation when it comes to determining the reality of a setting. I love this sort of analysis, and I hope to see more!
I will still use my armour knights dont care if they are ass
I got an ad after Alear was mentioned and I legitimately thought that it was the end of the video lol
The absolute worst unit in any Fire Emblem game is Sue.
This is why I hate any units that fall into the HIgh versatility and High ease of use category like Seth, FE7 Marcus, Fredrick and Titania as they don't teach you how to play the game their teaching you bad habits. Throwing one these units into a horde of enemies and watching them take out 10 enemies on their own is just boring and not fun but of course you have your meta noobs who will defend their usage with every inch of their being. I like to use everybody and earn my victory's over the game so taking the easy way out by using OP units, playing the meta and using guides is not my style If you like using these units, playing the meta of a certain FE game, playing on lunatic difficulty or doing ironman runs that's great and all but don't talk down to or insult people who choose not to.
never played chess and thought, ow let me dispose my queen real quick, so i can get more strategic
I get what you mean, but it kinda comes off like speed is most important. And for me, it doesn't.
What is the song playing in the background, I don't know when it starts or stops but specifically at 2:10 I've had that stuck in my head for months but can't remember the name!
"What Makes a Bad Fire Emblem Unit?" Me: Can You kill things FE Unit: Yes Me: You're good Me: Can you kill things FE Unit: No Me: Can you eventually kill things FEU: Yes Me: We'll come back to you Me: Can you kill things FE Unit: No, I'm a support only class that can't keep pace with the other units Me: You're trash
I kinda rather not have a Avatar unit. I diffidently wouldn't mind having 1 or 2 characters added just so we can name and customize them(which may or may not influence where and when they join). I play the early Avatar games just to make new characters and have fun, even when I make bad ones. Especially the bad ones! Just maybe not make them a gameover condition, just make them like every other character not the protag. Making Oifey the Avatar is an interesting idea, but I rather them just add a character with a couple lines and events like the rest and be done with it. Let the player write the story/fanfiction. Heck maybe have a few more "generic" soldiers be added to make Sigurd's army feel bigger and maybe allow the substitute children to be playable in gen 2 even if the "canon" children are born. ...with obvious changes to inventory and background but still allowing them to play the substitute role in case gen 1 characters weren't paired. And if you are worried about having twice as many unites to control, then just max out the units you can have at any one time at 24. Maybe make a mode where it's much more faithful to the original?
I'm always hesitant to pick certain classes given that all but three of the maps are aggressive combat, making slower tank units essentially outpaced. Turning Traitor, Hamil Canyon and Last Hope are the only chapters where defensive heavy units are key, every other map is better suited to fast moving aggressive units
...Wow, when you said 'depends on what you mean by 'bad'' you weren't kidding. Making encounters a breeze is what makes a *_good_* weapon/unit/character/tool/whatever to me, no matter the game or genre. I think you god "bad" and "unfun" confused; for an example from a completely different genre, Kratos' Blades of Chaos in the originals and shred every fight very efficiently with little effort -- they're _amazing_ weapons. They're also boring to use once you get over the thrill of being a living Beyblade.
The Pokedex entries are accurate and canon and ignoring them is stupid.
I saw the title a while ago, and put the video aside for later thinking you were out of your mind. You, uh, actually sold me on this. I don't know what else to say. Here's a sub, I guess.
I would really like an avatar character to be added into a FE4 remake, but I don't think your idea really fits the bill for an avatar. Oifey is a character. A tragically underused one, but he is his own man. In Fire Emblem, an avatar has to have multiple prerequisites, not least of all being the ability to change their name and their gender, for example. Not to say Oifey wouldn't work if he was a different gender and a different name, but he'd no longer be Oifey. Consider Kris, as an example. While Kris does butt into the screentime of Jagen, Kris is not Jagen. You don't delete Jagen entirely from the story to make way for Kris. The most elegant solution for an avatar character in the first generation, in my opinion, is to make them a blank slate fully customizable unit who joins in the prologue of Gen 1. Maybe they could be Sigurd's retainer, or a friend from his academy days, or a knight of Chalphy. It doesn't matter, but make room for player expression. They will be there for the whole journey, they can get married so you can ship yourself with the Gen 1 cast, and it'd be fun for multiple playthroughs. By the time of Chapter 5, perhaps you could have your avatar as the one who escorts Oifey, Shannan, and baby Seliph to Isaach on Sigurd's behalf, surviving to the second generation and serving the role of a mentor/Jagen type character to Seliph. Alternatively, your avatar could go with Sigurd and company, dying in Belhalla while your avatar's children (if you got married) take up their legacy in the second generation, like Morgan in Awakening or Kana in Fates. Something like that would definitely make Chapter 5 more personal, seeing your own custom character get killed and having to play through the second half of the game.
Man I just use what I think is fun. Having my knight get attacked 8 times in a single turn and only take 2 damage is euphoric to me. I also just like using a variety of characters because it becomes boring to rely on the same 5 or 6 of them. Honestly my hottest take is that I don't think there's truly any "bad" units. Maybe it's naivete, maybe it's optimism, but I like to believe that any unit can become powerful with enough effort from the player.
To break from the unending negativity of this comment section, i'll be honest. I actually very much like this idea, although I see avatars as just the "perspective character" in this case. Oifey seems defined that way, most similar to Kris (if done slightly better), and I'd be perfectly okay with that. Painting the picture of how he would feel, and his impact on the story by being a unit, having more supports (although probably no inheritors) to connect him to the cast? This could work. I think it bears expanding upon.
Corrin isn't very good he's one the best units in the game Heck in CQ/BR he's top 3 and in rev he's 1st Also do you even know what contrived means lol
Lol its funny how hes just like ok bye at the end of the video
Canonically Exeggutor loses one of its head and when a loose head finds other heads an Exeggcute is "born", oddish spread its seeds at night, muk is born in contaminated water at night, etc. there are many other examples and I don't know if they even bother anymore explaining how each species reproduces. the Breeding mechanic is bad and might be one of the worst things Pokémon did to its lore, every Pokémon reproduces the same way which makes all Pokémon feel the same and boring + is the reason baby Pokémon exist the old lore made Pokémon feel like strange creatures with alien origins, and breeding basically destroyed the cool monster concept and turn it into grandma's pet that I can duplicate infinitely in my backyard, until I get the right GENES of course (total opposite of Pokémon's message)
IIrc there are mentions of infant vulpix with three tails and white fur that would turn red with more tails as time passes and nidoran having a bunch of offspring -like rabbits- (but now is just one egg like every other Pokémon and its interesting how nidoqueen loses the ability to reproduce as a side effect of evolution) there was no need to make the infant stage into their own separate baby species, thankfully vulpix dodge the bullet (like three times according to leaks) and nidoran is already a 3 line evo so no baby form
I'm just saying Armor knights wouldn't get doubled nearly as often if they brought back Pursuit.
I wanna see Oifey on Sigurd's back like Miquella on Radahn.
Avatars are fucking cancer.
There's a big glaring hole in your argument, and that's the fact that Genealogy is already a complete story that does not need an Avatar.
12:55 As someone who has an unwrapped copy of Engage on his shelf and is waiting for a good opportunity to sell it off, I can tell you this: Alear is the *WORST* Avatar in the franchise. Alear is *ALL* the problems an Avatar can have and then some. Personality that breaks the immersion? Alear is a wishywashy mopeball who tries to run away on the first fight and breaks down crying at the death of someone he/she just met. Pointless reason to have an Avatar? Alear makes no big player choices and the game never justifies having an Avatar other than "the other games did it". And then there's what detractors call the "Avatar Worship"... It's hard to get worse than having an Avatar that is LITERALLY worshiped by the whole land. It gets especially glaring once you find out about your past, in which... SPOILER ALERT It turns out Alear was a reluctant follower of the BBEG who turned on him, got shot in the back in return and has NO noble acts between taking out the BBEG in the past and now, as Lumera kinda just built up all that hype about Alear while the latter was in a coma. Really, whoever wrote this crap should never write a Fire Emblem game ever again.
I'd still take Alear over Byleth. Alear's story isn't great, but Byleth has 0 personality.
@@ResurgentRaven Byleth has a personality in 3 Hopes. And at least isn't obnoxious.
Not sure if this would work for FE4, but I do love the idea of an avatar who exists across multiple generations, growing up and going from a young advisor to a wise mentor over the course of the game.
Yeah Alear is just straight up not an avatar in my opinion. Theyre literally just a main lord that the player is allowed to name, thats it. They have their own personality and arent any more customizable than any other character outside of their gender, theyre genuinely just a character whose name you get to pick.
Multiple problems with this idea. 1. The point of the avatar was newer to improve the narrative of the game, the point is to make bland character who the player can easily project themselves onto and who everyone praises and loves 24/7 in order to sell the power fantasy. They are a marketing tool, not a narrative tool. The only real exception is Shez, but that's because Shez was pretty explicitly made in response to the criticism Byleth got from the fanbase. 2. Avatars being a marketing tool also means that replacing Oifey with an original avatar in FE4 would mean that there's 1 less character that IS and Nintendo can sell you in Heroes and through other merchandise. Why would IS sell just additional Oifey alts in Heroes when it could also sell alts for the new female and male avatar instead? 3. Avatars in FE are meant as a type of power fantasy, that's why they are always among the best units in the game or sometimes arguably the best units in the entire franchise like Robin. Making it so that Oifey wasn't playable at the start and was Sigurd's errand boy ruins the power fantasy. The only real solution would be like how FE12 does it where Mark just does everything instead of the rest of the cast, however, the problem is that Sigurd is by the design of FE4 the strongest unit of the first gen and even if the avatar becomes stronger than him in chapter 3, they will still be overall overshadowed by Sigurd. 4. The world doesn't revolve around Oifey. In every FE game to feature an avatar, aside from FE7 where they were still experimenting and Kris who is more debatable, the most important people in the world are the avatars. However, in FE4 Oifey isn't the one who defeats Arvis and Julius and saves the world and its instead Seliph and Julia. Oifey cannot get the book of Naga of the Tyrfing and that means that the players would feel alienated by being the third wheel in the story. Ultimately, an avatar character doesn't really fit into the game and trying to make a character like Oifey into the avatar is like trying to put a square into a round hole.
I don't know if I'd agree on that last point for Awakening since it's kinda split between Chrom, Lucina, and the Avatar. And the only reason that the Avatar can take down Grima is just for story choices that don't mean crap in the grand scheme of things.
Welcome back!
Maybe if it was like New Mystery (but toned down even more) it could work. But the avatar would very much have to be in the background. Basically, have the avatar start out as like a Chalfy/Grannvale Tactician joining Sigurd's group on campaign. The avatar could also be one of the survivors of "that event", and could witness both Sigurd's fall AND Seliph's rise from the sidelines. 25:30 This could potentially be solved with Echoes-esque Memory Prisms.
No Fire Emblem should ever have an avatar, every game that used one worsened the writing. Avatar worship destroys the main characters themselves & their struggle/story, it gets worse when romance is involved 💀 Having an avatar fundementally ruins the writing bc of the pandering & babysitting, why? Because the avatar represent the "player" & the company don't want the player to feel bad or be offended by a flawed avatar so they make the avatars boring & without personality or meaning, take out Byleth for example & all house leaders would have to rely on their allies rather than a walking corpse, or look at Corin.. then again I think maybe it's better to forget he/she ever existed 😑
More than making an avatar, your idea would be better if ofiey was a second lord or simply naming him like in FF7 lol
And why we don't make two avatars? The first one, a kind of Finn of Sigurd or Edain, the second, the son/adoptive son of our first character
Now this is Genealogy content I can get behind!
Dude with all due respect you just recreated the concept of script rewrites. You know the ones Shadow Dragon and Echoes did without an avatar character? Your pitch doesn’t even qualify since your pitch had no control of their appearance or their name. What you described is pov character.
4:28 Absolute Wrys erasure.
Echoes didn't have a avatar why the hell would you want to risk FE4
I 100% agree with you. Now that you've presented me with this, I'm actually hoping that they add an avatar for the game. I never actually seen the problem with an avatar within these games. It even helped me to feel connected to these games. I haven't played So what if I want to have a power fantasy? I feel like avatars can improve, and I do feel like it has some signs to continue on improving. Maybe some choice systems could work along the way that feels more meaningful that makes you connect with the character that you have.
missed youu!
Honestly, having a avatar in FE4 would be fun, and their kid being friends with Seliph
