??? can someone confirm that the IONIQ 5 can't charge at 11KW on Level 2 charging here in the United States, I'm hearing that it's only possible for those who have 3-Phase power supply in your home's electrical panel, which most homes can't handle without a major upgrade, costing upwards of 4,000 in many cases:
@flolou8496 Yes, the Ioniq 5 can charge at 11kw in US and Canada. It's in European countries where they receive 3 phase power to their homes. They only use 3 phase power in commercial and industrial places here.
@@livewirereview That's what I thought, but this recent review of a 2023 KIA NERO, here in the USA said, his level 2 charging chord would not charge at 11KW and he said he was told it was because he did not have 3 Phase Power, which sounds hard to believe, otherwise it would be heard of more from the KIA-Hyandai ecosystem, I would think,
@flolou8496 A Kia Niro charges at 7.2kw anyway. It's not the same charger. The Ioniq 5 has a larger capacity charger, BUT they've been having issues with these, and the software update throttles back power when there is high heat detected.
@@livewirereview I'm not sure where you live, but I don't live in a cold climate compared to the East Coast, however I am forced to charge outdoors at night in temps from December 15th to Feb 15th where it's in the mid 40's on average from 10PM to 6AM. Anyway I bring this up because the 2023 model added the ''heat pump'' as standard, and was wondering if that could have in any way a benefit when charging/while parked overnight on Level 2 charging, (as I understand the answer would be NO because it's primary or maybe only use is for faster Level 3 DC charging efficiency, but just thought I'de ask anyway) P.S. I have no garage, just a driveway, that's very common still in the SouthWest.
@@flolou8496 No change for that scenario. The heat pump is for interior climate while driving. The battery has a heater inside that only comes on when needed and charging on a level 2 EVSE.
Everyone talks about the weight like it’s super crazy. Now she’s definitely a heavy girl but nothing crazy. I had a 2500 Ram Cummins that came is a 8000 pounds. A that didn’t have regen. The engine brake falls woefully short of EV regen.
Yup my Dad's F250 Diesel is 8000lbs too, but this is supposedly a 1/2ton class truck. An ICE 1/2ton weighs about 5500lbs. The Lightning is 6700lbs. At 8474lbs, this is pretty heavy...
I love how the work truck gets a spare tire below the bed but the 100k version of the Silverado EV doesn't get a Spare or Android Auto/apple car play. GM what were you thinking?
😅 That sounds like the higher trim Hyundais that come with a compressor and slime instead of a spare tire.
lmao - The truck has radars, camera, adaptive cruise, crazy computers and sophisticated software... but screw you humans, no heated anything for you. *Get back to work!*
@@FraserGoodTimes love it!
Great video, incredible monster of a vehicle. So crazy that it's so big, so heavy, but so powerful.
@@FraserGoodTimes It can do it all, just a little long to charge on road trips. But you get more range in the same amount of time than you would with a Lightning.
Yet another impressive, thorough, no nonsense review! I just discovered your reviews today (with the Blazer EV which is what I'm leaning toward), and will be watching all of them when I get the time!
Thanks! Feel free to leave suggestions, too. Another subscriber mentioned that we should shoot under the car, and it's been a big hit!
@livewirereview indeed the fact that you go under the hood and under the car to show us the drivetrain, suspension, etc., sets you apart from the abundance of other reviewers out there! I learned some valuable things about the Blazer EV and Equinox EV from your videos, even after watching dozens of others on both vehicles.
Fantastic review and insights from your mechanic perspective. Thank you for going under the hood, and underneath the car, to give us details about so many things we don't hear about from other reviewers! The suspension, the motors, the heat pump, etc... So much good info, and in a half hour video! Some others stretch to 40-50 minutes and don't have half the details yours does! I REALLY wish GM offered the larger battery (and higher towing capacity) on the AWD RS. That's what I would want. But now I'm stuck trying to choose between the AWD or the longer range/higher towing. You said the RWD is cheaper and maybe it is in Canada but here in the US (I'm in Michigan) the RWD version is actually more expensive than the AWD.
@johntenpas70 The irony is that I've tried to make them shorter than 30min but there's too much to cover! I too wish you could get the 102kwh with AWD but I think it's available in the Cadillac version. I'm going to request that one soon so I can check it out myself. Thanks for the great comments!
@@livewirereviewI just put a deposit on a factory order 2025 and decided to go with RWD! The better range, slightly faster charging, higher HP, higher towing, and better sound system ultimately swayed me. Super excited!
I like your reviews Thanks. Could you do the Solterra?
@davidmonheiser9009 Matt has reached out to Toyota, but we haven't heard back yet. We'll give it another shot. Thanks for the idea 💡
Great video!!!

Have problem with ''charge port door open'' , nice to see how it looks at least
Hopefully still in warranty?
It seems that you are describing Canadian tesla sc deployment is much further behind than the US. I am unsure how up to date your experiences are with charging non-tesla's. The only reason that tesla V2 are proprietary to tesla only is that every v2 charging site is hardware incapable to CCS communications which tesla and elon switched to in 2022 models. Any tesla vehicle produced before 2022 needs a hardware port controller upgrade (which tesla does not offer for free) to communicate via CCS communications protocol (V2 chargers cannot do that). This means that the new J3400 standard uses only CCS communications and not tesla proprietary communications even though the cable design comes from tesla and tesla models produced before 2022 are not compatible to J3400 chargers. So in the end older tesla models will not be able to use non-tesla chargers when we switch over to J3400 without paying for a hardware upgrade to their car.
Yes that is all correct. Luckily the hardware upgrade is inexpensive for most models. But it still leaves Tesla owner's that CAN charge at CCS stations an advantage over other OEM EVs.
What do you think of the digital side “mirrors” in the 2025 Ioniq 6?
@jimvanides3533 they don't allow those here in North America, so I haven't come across them yet! I personally would have a hard time with them. I've always found Honda's side mirror camera when turning and digital rear view mirrors to be a little odd for my brain to comprehend.
212kwh and 3.8 tons is insane, at least for my european mind. You could turn that into at least two normal sized cars lol. I wonder if taking a few inches of legroom and turning it into a longer bed would be more useful for a "work" truck. Seems like trucks from 20 years ago had a better form factor for the kind of buyer this vehicle is inteded, or at least marketed, towards.
I was thinking the same! 6 seats, less leg room, more bed. It is a little much. The battery is so big that it was actually difficult to charge it up any significant amount. You could make 3 cars with what this truck is made of!
I am very close to buying this truck. When you say you could only charge 25% overnight was that on the GM PowerUP level 2 charger that plugs into a RV 40 amp outlet? Thanks!
Nope. I only had access to a 16a 240v charger that puts out 3.7kw. You'll do much better with 40amps but still only about 55 to 60% overnight. But 55 to 60% will get you a very considerable distance! That's about 400+km easily.
@joshbrittain7167 I own the RST trim level. The MAX battery pack (205KWh) does charge at 380KW and keeps over 300KW between 15 and 65 SOC and slowly drops from there. I have a 60 amp circuit feeding a tesla combo wall unit and have it set to 48 amps and I get about 24 miles added every hour. I have used a 80 amp charger at work and at 19KW charging I add about 34 miles per hour. These are very respectable and capable charging vehicles. The extended battery pack (180KWh) have a slightly lower battery pack peak voltage and gets about 20% less DC fast charging speeds (peak should be about 310KW) To go back to your question a 40 amp outlet will charge (80% rule) at 32 amps which will get you 7.2 KW charging. I consider that to be very usable for overnight charging. BTW I keep my SOC limit to 65% for every day use and only adjust when I plan road trips. And when I am on the road trip that is over 500mi I only charge to 80% as a rule of thumb. The GM NAV system is very good at placing you at chargers for the shortest time to charge. GM hit this out of the park with these pick up trucks. They tow very nicely and are smooth to drive. I sold my chevy duramax 1500 and do not miss it at all. The RST EV is a better truck. Good luck with your decision.
Very cool
It certainly impressed me!
Great Review ❤ thank you sooo much !!
You're welcome! I just reviewed the Silverado EV this week. Check that one out too!
Great video review, but it's missing details on DC charging. I am hearing some poor reviews. However I would like to see your test review and comments. Especially when doing a long trip. If anyone has some feedback on 20-80% times that would be great. Big thanks again.
You're 100% right. For some reason, I forgot to mention the DC fast charging speed. At a dedicated 350kw 1000v charging station, the charge times are likely around 30 minutes. But I've found that this is another EV that usually takes around 45 minutes. A little slow for my liking on a road trip. I'll be discussing this a little more in the Silverado EV WT video I'm filming this afternoon.
I like the car, but I think GM still has some things to work out with their charging times. So I have decided to buy a Ioniq5. Same comfort but way more value and proven tech. including some of the fastest DC charging times.
@johnk1566 I can genuinely appreciate this! I was discussing charge times for road trips with a colleague yesterday, and this topic came up. I am a big fan of EVs that can charge quickly in 18-24min. My car can do that and it's a pleasure to bring on a road trip. Just long enough to get a coffee and go to the bathroom. I think you made an excellent choice. 👌
Great review! I'm booked for a test drive on Monday. Thank you.
Remember, it's not sporty, but a great ride for everyday tasks. You'll love it.
@livewirereview our family loved it, and we bought it! Many thanks again.
I own the RS AWD version and I wish this review had been available back a few months, it's the best one I've seen. My experience so far is that my range is closer to 300 miles here in California, not the 279 EPA range, we'll see now that winter is approaching how that is affected. Google maps does route you to compatible Tesla chargers (Model 3 and up. The early Tesla chargers are not compatible).
Thanks! Yes, your range in warm areas will be much higher. As a Canadian reviewer in the cold, I try to give more realistic cold weather estimates. For example, the Ariya can push 550km, but I still call it a 400km EV. You're right about the Tesla chargers. This is something I also try to remind people of when they say, "but they have access to the Tesla network!"

Awesome review! Loved seeing a Canadian’s point of view. Your video really made my decision easier, and I just bought one a few weeks back. Didn’t go for the RS… not crazy about the red details, and piano black trim outside, so went with the LT in blue, with a panoramic moon roof (live in Vancouver and need all the light I can get when the rain stops 😂)… anyhow, thanks for the video!

Only the drive unit oil. It's likely around 100k, but you'll have to check the maintenance schedule from the dealer.
Don't forget to mention the plastic pieces on back doors - this is the most unattractive part for me. If you do soft on the front doors why to keep hard plastic on the rear?? Sounds like a robbery to me. Even Korean makers doesn't do that. This is why I'm not getting this car.

Now I hear recycled black plastics have PFASs. Ugg! 🙄 Nice EVSE, though. Nice that it supports 6A since being a orphaned Spark EV owner, I want to be as gentle on the battery as I can.
@petersachs764 agreed. Just like the Leaf too. It's nice to be able to set the amperage.
Thanks for your excellent review, you covered all aspects so far about the Equinox EV from al videos available on youtube at this time, specially for Canadians ;-). One question, can we apply and anti rust treatment like a normal vehicle or is not at option? and also at 6:01 I see a kind of black cover under the hood, like to protect the underneath of the door hood, I bought the base version of the Equinox EV 2025 and mine didn't come with this protective panel, is that normal? is that of a concern not having it?, many many thanks!
Thank you! As for the black panel, it's not necessary for anything, so you won't need it. Rustproofing is an interesting topic. I personally highly recommend rustproofing, BUT EVs and hybrids use HV wires. The system checks these wires for electrical leakage every time the vehicle is turned on. This is known as isolation resistance. If the solvents in the rustproofing cause those wires to expand their insulation and this causes a fault, then it wouldn't be covered under warranty. It's not a huge deal, and I haven't seen this happen yet on any customers' cars that are heavily rustproofed.
@ many thanks for taking the time to answer, I appreciate very much, and learning at the same time. Just one more question, is that true that we need absolutely aluminum mags for EV vehicles or we can do it with normal steel wheels? It's controversial issue because most of vendors discourage people to go for cheap steel rims, but why??
@Monsieur-Estrada steel rims work just fine. However some steel rims do not fit around the calipers on some vehicles. You will have to test fit the rim before purchase.
@ excellent, many thanks again
How much does the single module cost approximately?
It will take me some time to answer this one. However, there are 3 rebuilders in Toronto that I have heard of. If you call a battery rebuilder near you then you might get a better answer. It varies.
First time I've seen one of your reviews, and I have to say it's really well done! You're thorough and it's one of the rare times where I didn't notice anything that wasn't accurate. Keep it up! One small detail to add, only the RWD model has the Bose upgrade available. For 2025, the AWD and RWD both have the sunroof as an option. 2024's the sunroof is only available on RWD models. I agree, the RWD is the model to get. I'm in the snow belt in MI, and always put a dedicated set of snow tires/wheels on my vehicles - I've never owned an AWD vehicle and have gotten around just fine. I'm going to subscribe to see what else you do! Right now as a Bolt EUV owner, I'm weighing whether I want to upgrade to a Blazer EV RS RWD, or a Cadillac Optiq. Not much out about the Optiq yet as it's not yet released.
@@dane9193 Thanks! It seems like GM was all over the map for features they offered in the Blazer for the first little while. I would look at the Optiq when it's available and the Lyriq. They don't cost that much more than the Blazer and offer a lot more power. However, you never know what kind of deal you can get at the end of a sales year!
Such a great review of these cars, well thought out and relevant information coming from daily use. Very helpful, thank you!
Thank you for this! I appreciate it!
Excellent review. Earned a like and subscribe. Great to see a nice Canadian review.
@@krisp8725 thank you!
13:30 Admitedely the subscription structure is VERY confusing and it's almost as if it was intentionally confusing so people will just endlessly pay the subscription without thinking too much (we all know that's ultimately why subscription model works so well in terms of extracting money out of customers' pockets). But my understanding is Google Map is a permanently accessble software that comes with the car. But it requires internet to work, you can get internet through GM onboard cellular data plan OR providing internet to the vehicle through your own WiFi hotspot (usually provided by your smart phone). So if I understand it correctly. You can use Google Map indefinitely as long as you have a hotspot capable cell phone. I hope someone can verify it and I think GM really needs to rethink their strategy in this because I love the vehicle but hate the subscription ideas. And I really appreciate that you go through some mechanical stuff, this engineer love that kind of stuff.
Perfect for blocking in someone who ices the charger
@@thedownwardmachine I won't lie, I was thinking the same 😉.
I dig it. But I'm a guy, and guys love cords. Pretty sure it's a thing.
Agreed... I love the bundle of wires behind my sound system too lol 😆.
I have seem many reviewers makit the same mistake with auto popping handled. You DO NOT have to pull twice. Its by design. When you approach, handle pops out and when you put your hand behind the handle, it unlcoks the car. You dont have to pulss twice. Just once after it unlocks it ( by you putting your hand behind the handle)
@Abevlife more of a comment than a mistake. It's slow to respond and should just unlock the doors when you approach. Just something I noticed and did not enjoy.
@@livewirereview understand. It's by design. Some people like it, some don't. I am okay if it doesn't unlock as it pops out as if I am passing by the car, I don't want it to unlock. But it does not need to be pulled twice. Just need to wait a fraction of a second before pulling the handle.
Has the EV a regustration no like a normal aspired engine which is entered in the registration document?
@David-fj5lz Any normal liscensed mechanic may work on these right now. Certification for EV work is still in development, and some side courses are usually required.
How did you insure this vehicle as you have technically changed its “engine”, with the EV battery being exposed as a ticking time-bomb?
@David-fj5lz The battery would be re-sealed and re-installed. Nothing different than say changing out camshafts and re-sealing a timing cover. It's definitely not a ticking time bomb.
Great stuff 😊
Thank you!
It doesn't work at the super charger stations
