Ranger Jon Outdoors
Добавлен 8 май 2017
Gear reviews, discussions, and adventures dealing with everything outdoors including Knives, Guns, Equipment, Fishing, Camping, Hiking, Work, Boating, Paddling, Research, etc. I am a Park Ranger in Florida and wanted to add my input and thoughts on gear reviews and discussions from a place of common sense, day to day use as an outdoor professional. We have extremely diverse and harsh environments here in Florida that wreak havoc on all of the gear we use, and adding saltwater into the daily mix - even in forested areas, just makes our expectations for our equipment that much more demanding. I hope to be able to give a different approach, expose some hidden gems, and overall just help viewers out with advice on gear they may be interested in. The outdoors is my passion, and I have devoted my life to protecting and preserving our environments and resources. This all comes form the heart, from someone who lives and works outside.
Spyderco Stretch 2 K390 Long Term Full Review (2 Years)
These are my final thoughts on the k390 stretch 2! Simply astonishing is all I can say. Filmed vertical on accident in 1 take just because I expressed my thoughts and feelings from the heart and honestly and every take I did after just felt too scripted, so I'm posting the original. It was all on the fly so take some of the data points for what they are and enjoy!

I have been wondering for a while just how corrosion prone K390 is or isn't. I couldnt find the answer I was looking for on the forums or youtube so I decided to buy a Stretch 2 and carry one edc at work for 6 months. If you're curious how K390 does on the florida coast and elements, my findings are here. Thanks for watching!

Sharpening BD1N - 600 Grit Cheap Waterstone Finish (see description)
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.4 года назад
Sharpened up some BD1N steel today. It takes a clean apex readily and sharpens relatively easy, but holds an edge like much harder to sharpen steels. As you can see it will easily cut free standing phone book paper with as low as a 600 grit edge. I highly recommend it for kitchen use, especially for the price. 🥃🤘🇺🇸🏝🔥

Spyderco Sage 2 - Masterclass in Simplicity

Just going over my initial ramblings and thoughts on The Spyderco Sage 2. There are a couple moments in the video where I kind of say the opposite of what I am getting at but I try to make sure I clarify if I did. The Sage 2 is a work of art, and another one of those knives that the price tag is justified through the intangibles and accumulation of fine details. Thanks for watching!

Kershaw Dividend M390 UPDATE - Issues & Sharpening
That "english green" one, is that not cadet grey in colour? I have several Ganzo 729, those are PM2 clones, in cadet grey. Cadet grey is known as well as "confederate grey". The lighting conditions in the video sometimes give a green hue and then again and rather cadet grey colour. I chose cadet grey (which is very similar to "light slate grey") since that colour is about the best to hide dust and dirt. As I live in an hot and dusty and dirt particles climate, I adjusted the colours to hide best any dust. Black gets quickly looking dirty and so does obviously orange. I have a few in darker green of these Ganzo 729 models as well which is a very nice colour but I have no idea how quickly it will look dirty. Specially ashes in the air from burning wild fires are visible on an darker handle so cadet grey is by far the best colour. I never saw my cadet grey knife dirty but my black handle knives have all indentures in the scales full of whitish dust/sand which is noticeable and looks bad. The Ganzo 729 has an edge grind angle of 17.5 degrees as I just measured it. Exactly as the Spyderco PM2 original. These Paramilitary 2 are the best cutters in the word and as well the Ganzo 729 cuts 3 times better than the flat grind DuraTech knife which has an 23 degrees of edge angle. The blade geometry of the PM2 and Military leaf blade makes all the difference. These Ganzos 729 are in 440C steel, 58 HRC and cost around 22$. They have the McHenry-Williams lock, aka Axis Lock which I prefer over the compression or liner lock by far.
As long as you're not flexing it or running your thumb across it, it's like it's not even there. You'll forget about it eventually. It really probably just doesn't make sense to have to mill the whole scale just for a little lip that probably wouldn't hold up though the milling process without breaking. The flex is good. Otherwise it would crack. Most things will break though, if you try and break them.
This or the sage 5?
@@DeffoZappo very tough. I like the sage a lot, but prefer the sage 2 and sage 1 over the 5. The native definitely represents a cost savings and value proposition but I’d say the sage 5 is overall a nicer knife, but you’re paying for the full steel liners, compression lock, etc. I think I prefer the blade shape on the native myself, as well as the additional steel options. Nothing wrong with s30v tho.
Great review sir. I am going to pick one of these up for my every day work watch, instead of my quartz battery Lumi Nox. I need a solar piece, where I don’t have to worry about it stopping on me. Thanks for the review- I’m definitely sold on this rugged time piece! Cheers, Matt👍👍✌️
Casio is my go-to and favorite watch brand, this is one of my favorite watches. It’s on the upper limits of case dimension for my wrists but other than that and the lume it’s a perfect dive watch, especially for the price. Batman version for me, with a Stainless Steel Bracelet from Long Island Watch. It reminds me of a nice Seiko or Citizen after the bracelet upgrade, and I also got the Citizen Promaster “Unite the Blue” Special Edition one of my favorites as well. Another really really good watch I find in my rotation this Fall/Winter is my Casio Edifice EFB-S108D with the white/stainless dial, it’s a great sporty alternative to the PRX. 👌🏼 I love my Casio W800H as well, negative display, leather strap from Vario. It’s what started my collection a year a half ago, for $20. 🖤
I just bought my first Benchmade, barrage, and I love it. I do agree with you about the pocket clips, I lost a sweet little generation one Spyderco dragonfly that way.
Some years ago I bought a dealer exclusive Military in S90V steel, titanium frame lock with carbon fiber scale on close out for $168 . Fantastic knife ‼️
Legal blade length in my country 100mm, Stretch 2 blade length 101mm : (
Yes, K390 is my personal steel of choice as well. I carry the Stretch 2 (outdoors), the Dragonfly (office) and the Delica (general purpose). Never leave home without one of those three knives.
To avoid any issues with setting the date just follow the directions included in the manual. Avoid setting the date between the hours of 8:00PM and 2:00AM. I normally set the date to the previous day and then rotate the hands until the date moves ahead to the correct date at midnight and then set the time. That way I know that I have the watch correctly in either AM or PM.
I need this in Magnacut
I have a Dragonfly 2 in K390. It lives in my 5th pocket.
It’s not that big of a deal to put it back together. Any of the FRN Seki city knives can all be put back together with the same trick. You simply put the knife together with the lock and everything in place as if you were finished with it BESIDES the standoff closest to the pivot and you press down the lock and then slide in the standoff. Done. To easy.
This is a great knife, don’t let this guys opinion steer you away from this version. It’s great and there is a reason Spyderco designed it this way. I use this knife everyday, I’m in the trades and work out side, the micarta holds up like a beast and I love the way it wears in.
@@KDawg09 thanks for the input. Now that it’s been a few years of them out in the wild it seems like they’ve been solid. I’ve been thinking about picking one up again myself
Awesome knife one of the most comfortable knives I’ve ever used.
To answer your question about why a lot of people would rather Wear a G-Shock than a dive watch, mostly it's aesthetics, but some people just prefer a digital watch. They are more easily and immediately readable, at least for some people. You think that an analog watch face is inherently better if that's just what you prefer. If it's a dive watch versus an analog G-Shock, then I guess it is purely just down to aesthetics in that case
Jon i have the military and paramilitary both, two of both actually, i have the military in m4 and paramilitary in m4 and i have the military in s30v and paramilitary in s45vn, i love all 4 knives, thanks for sharing, love ur job too, very cool man!
I bought one of these when they first came along,as I was and am a fan of the automatic lefty citizen promaster. It's been great as you point out, and I love the stock straps and wouldn't even consider changing it out! I've had seiko skx and even their solar version but nobody does solar light Citizen?
I love the promaster ans thats on my wrist most of the time. But the Duro is so good for the money. I got a blue one on a silver mesh band, black one of a striped nato. And im gonna get a black and gold on a jubilee bracelet. I might have a watch problem. The gshock i like is the square.
So I’m sold on buying this knife. I just looked it up online and there’s a dang stretch 2XL. Should I go with the OG?
That edge looks pretty rough! I have 4 K390s and have to say it is one of my favorite steels.
@@Bitworker1 it’s been WELL used ! Still sharp tho. It’s been reshaped full since this vid but just once
@@rangerjonoutdoors6429 I don’t doubt it is still sharp. That steel is amazing. Yet to get a chip on any of mine yet!
I bought my nephew this watch about five months ago for his 17th birthday. He loves it, wears it all the time.
Living on Vancouver Island, I've had no problem with K390.
Please don't say "cheap." I believe the proper term is "inexpensive." LOL
@@williamrichins4908 well said! Nothing cheap about this watch
Would love to see your review of the new military 2
your job sounds like a dream
Just received this watch from amazon sold by citizen watches Canada. Love it but why wouldn’t my strap have the printed NDL on the band? Older stock model maybe?
Newer I think. Mine doesn't have it either, I've had mine about 15 months. I think they got rid of it on the newer models (which I'm glad about).
@@folksurvival awesome, thanks for the info! Love this watch 🍻
It's really cool how you had to actually neglect it to be like that, and even now it looks great.
Have you tried the Military 2 since then?
Just bought a manix 2 lw in CPM-M4 from bhq for $135. 3 ounces.
Than you need the paramilitary. Than will have all 3. And that will take a hog if you need to. 😮
people don't carry tip down because it poses a concern for fatal injury. Tip up, blade moves distally, posing minor injury risk, but most likely being blocked by pocket Tip down, blade moves proximally, posing fatal injury risk by way of cutting the femoral artery
People do carry tip down as a personal preference. Most field operators I've met carry tip down or tip up depending on the type of knife their carrying at the time.
The pocket clip looks new . Did you replace it with a new one.
@@The69bombero no! The pocket clip is actually older than the entire knife.
I added a black S/S bracelet to mine (I have the "G" model gold trimmed bezel - looks sharp). Just don't care for that loose flap of straps. Mine keeps INCREDIBLE time. +1 to +2 seconds PER MONTH! I wear mine for wet occasions: fishing, swimming (including snorkeling), sailing, kayaking. No issues. I also wear it hunting because the large face/hands are easy to see in low light; even without much lume. I'm color-blind but have great low-light vision. My Every Day Wear is a Hamilton Khaki King II (also bracelet) and for working/painting/logging I have my trusty (and also extremely accurate) Seiko Solar 100M. Only a beater because it has 12 years worth of scars.
Cant decide between the stretch-2 and delica-4 in K390.
@@holdernewtshesrearin5471 honestly if I were to do it again Id get the Endela. The stretch is definitely more of a hard use blade but I don’t always feel the back lock suits that the most. I think the Endela is right in the sweet spot.
@@rangerjonoutdoors6429 - Roger that. And how so? Are you referring just to the length of the blade or the shape, the thickness, the grind or what? Thanks for the info!
@@holdernewtshesrearin5471 I’d say all of the above! I think with the edge stability the k390 has, the thinner blade stock is nothing to worry about and you get the benefit of being way slicier. It’s also only 3oz in weight vs almost 4 on the stretch. I’ve been getting more and more weight conscious of my edc these days and it’s making a nice difference in my comfort day to day. I also find the blade shape on the Endela a little better for slicing/cutting, the large flat section on the stretch can go unused sometimes for me. If you take out the forward choil ( which I love) the overall cutting edge is very close on the two blades also. I don’t see a lot of downsides to the Endela honestly besides “harder use”, but even that on a back lock frn spyderco needs to be within reasonable expectations. Still an AWESOME knife, but I really find myself close to pulling the trigger in the Endela many times now. It seems like it’s in a really good spot in every spec, especially because I find the delica just too small for me personally.
@rangerjonoutdoors6429 - Roger that. Basically, I'm looking for the sliciest blade I can get in K390. The size of the knife isn't that important nor the weight. Anything in the 2.7" to 3.4" blade size is fine so either the delica, endela or the stretch will work fine for me and as long as it's less than 5 ounces I'm good. I just want a super thin edge in K390, good ergonomics and a strong, reliable one hand operable lock and a smooth action. I have a native-5 fluted titanium and love it so I'm good with Spyderco back locks. The native is also my smallest Spyderco and I like that size for EDC though I generally carry larger blades. One of my manix-2s is my go-to standard EDC along with another blade more suited to whatever tasks I'm doing that day. Larger tacticsls if going in harms way, smaller gentlemens folder if doing office work or going to dinner etc or anything in between to handle various tasks. The main thing is the steel. I'm fascinated by the K390 and want a knife that will get the most out of it so in my mind, a smaller (about 3") blade, light to medium duty knife fits the bill. The delica seems to call to me the loudest as of now. Plus I love that slate blue handle!
@@holdernewtshesrearin5471 I think the delica is as slicey as k390 is gonna come! The stretch is not what I’d call slicey at all honestly.
Hows the action?
@@holdernewtshesrearin5471 pretty plasticy but it feels solid in use.
@@rangerjonoutdoors6429 - mainly I'm concerned with whether or not it has blade play, both side to side on the pivot and up and down on the lock and will the blade drop free on its own when unlocked or with a little flick.
So I think it depends on the person and climate. I live in a very humid area, and I sweat like crazy. After one use outside doing some landscaping it was already rusting. That being said I love the knife and keep Frog lube on it to help prevent rust. I do have a question for you or anyone who reads this. I like to use my knives to cut up fruit or other foods sometimes. What rust prevention product can be used that's safe to consume? I'm asking because Frog lube is not one of them lol😅
Greetings from a Tiny Island in Maine, USA - Mineral oil is what works for me. Food safe and does not turn rancid like some other oils.
@TinyIslandMaine Thank you!
@@thechugdude hope it helps you out 👍
Sorry bout the length of this message, but we’re talkin bout my favorite steel of all time!! Swear to God I wouldn’t trade my K390 Stretch for any 3 knives made with Magnacut. And idc who makes the knives, how much they cost, how hard they are to get, or what the HRC is on their MC…I wouldn’t trade 3 for 1. If we’re being totally honest, K390 blows the doors off MC in every way (except stainless) even when MC is hardened higher. K390 is that good, especially when it comes to edge retention, ease of sharpening, and how sharp it truly gets. And where I live in Cincinnati, my K390 knives don’t even patina even though I use the heck out of them for everything, so they certainly don’t rust. I’ve collected knives for 40 years and without a doubt I’ve found nothing even close that compares to K390 for an overall EDC knife. Don’t get me wrong, MC is a great steel, but most knife customers have yet to see its full potential because not many knife companies’ heat treatment vendors are hardening it to it’s recommended 63-64 HRC. I have a custom EDC in MC @ 64.3 HRC, and again it does not come close to out performing any K390 knife I have, especially up against my Stretch or Delica. And the blade geometry on my custom in MC is almost identical to my Stretch. It may sound like I’m a MC hater, but that’s nowhere near correct. It’s just that MC shouldn’t even be used in the same sentence as K390! 👍👍
Great looking knife there. I just ordered and won a couple Police models on eBay. I got the Police 4 K390 FRN SE from Knife Center, etc. Anyway, I dig all these 'hybrid' models, but I am partial to the all or nothing kind of mentality. Example: Endela, Stretch, larger models of certain Spyderco models (XL versions). The Police is a large folder with attitude that has a class of its own. Nonetheless, I love Spyderco. Was just venting a bit ha-ha! Great video man!
ive had my police 4 for a hot minute and i always feel badass whenever i pull it out to use it. best knife
Ive found it hard to buy any other knives after I got the k390 stretch 2. I work as a freight dock worker as a forklift op and trailer hostler. Before the stretch 2 I heavily favored my BM 940 and Demko AD-20 sharksfoot simce they were still usuable with glove but I had to sharpen them about once a month and they arent as usuable as the stretch 2 with gloves. Amazing to me honestly because i bought it since it was a inexpensive k390 knife not expecting much more then experience with k390 but it has been in my pocket when working for a year now and only ever had to hit it with a ceramic rod and strop.... and its hair popping sharp again. Also funny to me since I had myself convinced that my M4 PM2 was going to be the end all be all and I hardly touch it.
Looks like never used.
@@Famcia third video is for you bud
I got the endura, two versions that I love. K390 and lc200n, obviously for opposite purposes. But I clean out all the time because of sweat and sawdust and grime. I got a little trick it's pretty easy to reassemble now. You almost reassemble the whole knife except let the back lock bar stick out and then you shove it in and push the threaded secondary pivot in at the same time
What sunglasses are those?
44mm? I think is 42mm! Correct me if I'm wrong!
The whole flexing micarta thing is a complete non-issue for me. Sure, it might flex a bit in extreme situations, but that's a lot different than the entire handle flexing, like in a Bugout. Those steel liners are stupid stiff and confidence inspiring. I've had my Crucarta PM 2 for about a week and absolutely love it. And like yours, mine came stupid sharp! The only knife I ever bought that came sharper was a TRM Neutron 2. That thing was beyond scalpel sharp!
Lot of words saying nothing.
U talk a whole lot but say a whole lot of nothing.
This is one of Spyderco's best knives.
Love that design . Price here (uk) is ridiculous though. Roughly 300 dollars
I had the same concerns when I got this Crucarta PM2, but after over 2 years of EDC, I have had zero issues with this design. They did the Cruwear nice as well as mine sharpens and deburrs great. Zero issues.
Great to hear!! I’m probably going to pick one up again. It looks like it’s turned into a real winner
@@rangerjonoutdoors6429 Right on! But you have more choices Ranger Jon ..... Para 3 Crucarta, Military 2 and even a Crucarta Manix 2. I grabbed a Para 3 about a month ago when they first hit and gave it the second sharpening this A.M. Really felt good, edge came up fast, and deburred nice. I run a coarse edge on it at 600 grit as it's a shop knife, its impressive and strops back well. The micarta on my Para 3 is a dark brown/red, not tan like my Paramilitary 2, not sure if the colors change from batch to batch.
