Giving away the big tree.....
It was difficult....but sometimes for the sake of timing and the greater good....it becomes necessary to split a strip and give away a nice tree.
It does not matter much in reality....I am working on a day wage job with my brothers. My brother Jake needed a place to start above me and the big tree was a logical place to start.
It is just something that gets ingrained in to a Timber Faller. It is hard to give up a nice tree!
I hope you guys enjoy the video....it was a fun one to do.
Also if your interested in learning more about the details of falling and bucking timber...as well as the best kinds of gear and learning more about sharpening chains...things like this...be sure to go on the L...

A lunch time chat 9 ... The importance of family
Просмотров 7712 часов назад
In this lunch time chat I share a little about my family. I have four brothers and recently I have ended up working on the same job with two of them. I think it is a blessing to have brothers , and it's been a good part of my life ever since I can remember. Many things have come... and gone ... in life... but my brothers have always been there...and that's a good thing.
Last tree of the day ... Last tree of the week
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.14 дней назад
This video is about the last tree of the day on a Friday. This is the end of the second week working inland. The last tree happens to be a Cedar. I think that Redwood and Cedar look a lot alike. Perhaps Cedar is Redwoods inland cousin....I'm not sure....but anyways...just something I was thinking on....
Cutting a couple Sugar Pine...

Cutting a couple Sugar Pine in the Chico / Redding area of Northern California. The timber falling is definitely different in the inland regions versus the coastal regions. The ground tends to be more open ( less brushy) and the trees are single species trees. It's easier to deal with single species trees versus the Redwood clumps of the coast. Both places have there pros... and cons... ( Inlan...

I'm over in the inland Pine and Fir country now. The work on the coastal regions of Northern California just came to an abrupt halt very unexpectedly. Largely due to a rough economy and the log markets are not doing so well. Thankfully I was able to pick up some work over in the Chico / Redding area of Northern California. The wife and I hooked up the little travel trailer and headed over here ...
A lunch time chat 8 ... Work went from slow... to Stop!
Просмотров 323Месяц назад
In this lunch time chat I talk about how the work here in the costal region of Northern California has gone from slow... to a complete stop. There are still hand fallers working in some places, but many of the guys I talked to this week were experiencing the same thing. They were either out of work... or about to be out of work. This is concerning to say the least and it is really unprecedented...

The challenges of cutting Redwood Clumps.
Просмотров 586Месяц назад
Redwoods are unique trees. Unlike many other species, Redwood tend to grow in tightly grown together clumps. These clumps are formed when multiple sapling spring up from a single cut stump. They eventually grow into a tight clump of trees and this is what creates the difficulty for Timber Fallers. Cutting second or third growth Redwood is often a challenge because of this reason. I have not rea...
A lunch time chat 7 .... Looks like the log markets are really slowing down right now....
Просмотров 314Месяц назад
In this video I talk a little bit about the current log market slow down. Log markets are the same as everything else in a capitalist economy. It's all based on supply and demand. I am far from an expert on all the things that are currently effecting the log markets, but the most obvious reason for the current slow down in demand would be the high cost of housing and the higher interest rates. ...
Cutting an over head Jack Seat out....Eating lots of sawdust!
Просмотров 590Месяц назад
This video is about cutting an overhead Jack seat out. This is a real pain in the rear end, but sometimes it is necessary ( especially in Redwood ) . it is not so bad as long as a guy can reach all the way through with the bar( This is where having the 42 inch bar comes in so handy!).That being said....any kind of overhead cutting means that a guy is going to get a lot of sawdust in the face! Completely agree,ive had family members that have been on the outs since they were kids and didn't even speak to each other the rest of their lives,all of them have passed now and your right alot of wasted years to where maybe they could have had a resolve but their stubborn pride kept them from it so at some point they all passed over the years holding grudges so sad people hold onto pride and grudges and they were to prideful to say im sorry and I love you,I have always been the person that will be willing to bend and say I'm sorry and that I love you,but I was a logger and firefighter and worked in ems and I knew at some point it would be to late,I witnessed this in different families over the years and would hear them say that if I had known this was going to happen maybe we could have made amends but now it's to late,I witnessed this alot early in my carrier and throughout my carrier If you love someone don't be to prideful or try to be to Manish to say I love you,I always have been the person to say I love you even to my friends cause one day the clock will run out and if that makes me less of a man then I will take that over being to prideful and let time run out,im thankful that God gave me a kind and loving heart and time is running out on this world don't let it be to late be the one that bends be the one to give in if you feel like that makes you less of a man then that's ok just don't let time run out cause at some point it will,sorry for the long winded speech but this world and people in it needs to hear this more than ever with all the problems going on in the world i can swallow my pride and be glad to do it to just have more time with loved ones before it's to late,maybe this can help others I hope so.

      Thanks for sharing all that. I agree that it comes down to foolish pride a lot of times. Neither person willing to reach out....neither person willing to forgive....and then the years just start to go by...and before you know it....its to late. Life is to short for this. I had something similar to this with my Dad. A falling out....and a few years did go by with no contact...thankfully we were able to reconcile and reconnect eventually, but it had the potential to be one of those cases of running the clock out. Thankfully that did not happen and we see each other on a fairly regular basis and have family get togethers ...etc. He is in his late seventies now. I do consider those years lost as wasted time, but thankfully we have had many good years after that...and hopefully some more good years in the future. ( So far his health is still pretty good over all) Anyways....thanks for sharing ! It just brought this to my mind...so I figured I would put it out there...

    I cut mostly red oak, hard maple and other hardwood, is it safe to assume that a hardwood would most likely split and could could bore out the heart or would that defeat the large hinge and the pull?

    • @norcaltimberfaller1943
      @norcaltimberfaller1943 4 дня назад

      I would not recommend boring out the heart in a side lean situation. Generally speaking side leaners need that hinge all the way across to give it the best chance of holding on to the stump. That being said its good to keep in mind that all side leaners have the potential to break off and go in to their side lean. It's always good to practice with the species you cut the most of and see how they respond. Some trees will hold better to the stump and ( " come around " ) better then others.

    Question would this be better than a swinging Dutchman?

    • @norcaltimberfaller1943
      @norcaltimberfaller1943 14 дней назад

      In the case of heavy side lean... yes...the problem with a Dutchmen in a side lean situation...is that it allows the tree to drop even farther into its side lean and greatly increases the chances of it breaking off early. It's best to preserve the hinge all the way across in a side lean situation....
