My hardest race to date. Around the Grossglockner massive. The highest peak in Austria. 110 kilometers. 6,500 meters (21,000 feet) elevation gain and descent. Check out my crazy adventure! It was a once in a lifetime experience and I still can't believe how long I was running. Overall, it was a fantastic event. Great organization and execution! Mozart 100 2024. My hometown race. Overall it's the fifth year I've been participating in this competition, but always different distances. This year I wanted to conquer the longest of all races: the 105km distance. And I really thought I could. Even up to the last minutes. Check out this video to find out what happened to me during this ultra race. I didn't see it coming. But I guess the races...
Nike ZOOMX ZEGAMA 2 REVIEW | Trail Running | Shoe review

New year, new Zegamas! The first version of the Nike Zoomx Zegama shoes have been one of my favorite trail shoes ever since they came out. They had a good fit with a bouncy Zoomx midsole, making them a fun trail shoe for the mountains. The only issue I had with them was the slippery outsole on wet terrain. When I heard that the Zegama 2 would get a Vibram outsole, I knew I had to get them and t...

    I was given a pair for review here at UTMB 2024. Just noticed your review. Ha, we see eye to eye (but didn’t have any heel slippage with my lacing method)! This is the review I posted on Strava: Nike gave me the Zagama v2’s to test on this run: The great; 1) Good lockdown with the laces and well cushioned tongue. 2) The built in gaitors worked well and kept out all debris. 3) Great ride, excellent suspension/cushioning! 4) I went up .5 of a size. Toe box was wide and high enough for ultra distance. 5) Grip was fine, not one slip on technical trails. However there were no wet zones on the trail. 6) Stack height is perfect for me. Facilitates great cushioning but still solid ground feel. Any higher I would be concerned about stability and increased risk of ankle roll. Slight negatives; 1) Weight, not the lightest trail shoe but to be fair didn’t notice extra weight probably because of the excellent cushioning. 2) Did one hard rock stub and the rock guard protection was solid. The front of the shoe could do with a little more protection ie widen the rock guard. This would give me more confidence executing side to side running down narrow gullies and in other situations when the probability of striking rocks with the front sides of the shoes is increased.

      It does everything great. But i just don’t like the shoe. ( now after a few months in the rotation) Idk why but you know the feeling when you grab your favorite shoes before the run. With this shoe I have the opposite feeling. I liked the first Zegama shoes a lot more. Glad you liked them though!

  • @andrewbright6684

    I am like you and a size 12 in my other shoes. In these, I found the 12 slightly too small in the toe box. Unfortunately there are no half sizes after size 12 so I had to get a 13. These then felt too loose. A real shame as the shoe is otherwise awesome

      Hallo!! Danke dir 🙏 Ja es sind die Trabuco Max 3. Sie waren ok für den Ultra. Die Sohle war für den nassen Terrain am Abend nicht gut genug. Im Schlamm sind die wirklich unbrauchbar. Werden schwer und trocknen nicht. Im trockenen leichteren Gelände finde ich sie super. Hast du die Hoka Tecton X 2 probiert? Sind leicht, gut gedämpft und etwas breiter. Took me about 14h and change to finish the race and I don’t understand how can you say that it was really good job from organizers, it’s beyond me. Absolutely zero preparation for the weather, non of the aid stations had shelter, place to worm up or anything like that. I found a shelter at the 3rd aid station in some farmers garage and layered up, probably this move saved me. I saw people quitting and still had to wait outside in the rain for the buses for few hours. There was only one place in the second aid station to fill up the water ONE tap and probably 100 runners. St Gilet had no place to sit even :D. Lots of people take ultra running as a hype that was clear, vast majority was underprepared.

    • @chris.schmied
      @chris.schmied 5 месяцев назад

      Great job on your finish! Especially in that time and those conditions. 💪 Now that you mention it, i have to agree with you on the shelter situation. I had to take shelter in some storage room. It wasn’t even warm and almost no space to sit. Some Ultra races I’ve done in the past had tents with heating lamps, even when the weather was actually good. This would have helped a lot of runners that day. ( or all )

      @Nut_58982 5 месяцев назад

      @@chris.schmied It probably would have helped you a lot. I was 17th at the one moment and started to shake just like you, had 15 km till finish, wanted to quit, but guys at the aid station said I have to wait for a bus maybe 1,5h, so I figured it was about the same to finish. There was no shelter by the way! So i filled my two bottles with hot tea and wrapped my self in the safety blanket! That’s haw i got to the finish.. Good God what a nightmare that was, still shaking.

    Great video again Chris, sorry to see the DNF, but as a first time Mozart Light runner this year, even on our bit of the course the mud and conditions were unbelievable, downhills were so difficult, and it was a long time to be out in those weather conditions. - good to see you in good spirits at the end a few days later, despite the DNF thats an amazing distance on that terrain - maybe see you there next year as well!

    Respect for the effort! I made it to 32km where i missed the cutoff, due to underestimating the mud. I was freezing my butt off too. It looks like you could have profiteered from warmer clothes right off the start! I know i needed more insulation and rainprotection definetely. Anyways, see you there next year!

      I did 80k in T-shirt with waterproof jacket on. Somehow I was never cold, only problem was when I broke my pole on first descent, because I always run with poles. It was harder after that, but managed under 11 and half hours. Last part that you didn't have to run was really sketchy and dangerous. Slippery, narrow trail with raging water below...

      @@sip5123 the 80km were the last 80km of the 100, right? I heard they installed a rope after nockstein, that's how bad it was! Did you have warm pants at least? I hope i never break my poles! Beware of the carbon, the splinters are very nasty and i was told they can cause cancer.

      @@leonda4817Yes and by looking at the footage first 20 wasn't that bad, it only got worse with every hour and kilometer. Crazy that they let smaller distances even start. I've had my thighs I've used all winter, maybe running in snow helped.😅 But they were totally soaked very soon, I need to get something waterproof. Thanks for the warning about carbon, luckily it was a clean break and I've already ordered new ones.

    Btw, have you considered resoling shoes? Some people have them resoled with a vibram zegama before they even break them in. Resoling can be a diy project for people with a belt sander (<30euros). If you have them done professionally, you're looking at <70eu. That should give 300km+ extra, with a superior outsole to begin with. So roughly 50% more shoelife, which pays off for a shoe that costs 160eu. The vibram zegama should perform a lot better over the whole life of the shoe too, with barely any wear until the end.

    If this has too much stack height for you, you might love the torrents?! They are my all-time favourite shoes. The toebox is pretty roomy, so you can easily add an insole for added cushioning.

    Hi, Chris, what about salt. Did you ever had some troubles with your wades? Then some salt should help. Do you have some tips about consuming salt tablets during a race? Thank you in advance. 😀

      I don’t take salt tablets. I consume salt at the aid stations. Usually w some tomatoes or crackers.

    Do you recommend Underberg or Schafberg? At least the view from Schafberg looks better?

    • @chris.schmied
      @chris.schmied 5 месяцев назад

      The view from Schafberg is amazing. I prefer Untersberg bec of the alpine feeling you get there. Less crowds and steeper climbs. Difficult choice.

    • @djgenetic111
      @djgenetic111 5 месяцев назад

      Actually, it is hard to find a mountain in this region, where you don't have a great view. Untersberg is more difficult, you should have some mountain experience, because most routes have some exposed sections, and tourists tend to underestimate these routes. It is also physically more challenging than Schafberg, but there are also more difficult routes onto Schafberg. So, rule #1 is to really plan your hikes, because it can get quite tricky very fast. Also, do not trust single sources, because often different people will tell you very different things about any mountain 😉

    • @tustak
      @tustak 5 месяцев назад

      @@chris.schmied It was easier to get to Schafberg with public transport so I went there. However, the hike was mainly forest and car road. So the hike was not so great, but the view at the top was stunning.

    • @leonda4817
      @leonda4817 5 месяцев назад

      @@chris.schmied Sorry to hear that! Well, i had to DNF too. In Tiefbrunnau, 32km. I missed the cutoff time, because the mud slowed me down way more than expected. I paced reasonably from the beginning (~6:00 min/km, flat terrain), then lost maybe 10min in the traffic jam in glasenbach, at the first singletrail. Beeing at the back of the pack, all the singletrails were a huge mess already. However I did fairly well and only after Hof-aidstation i realized that the cutoff could be dangerous to me. Filbling-mountain was a complete disaster then and i had huge problems with the mud. It was barely walkable and i lost so much time, despite feeling fit and motivated. The cold wind was really harsh and i have to admit that i was ill-prepared and freezing pretty badly. I slipped out in the mud and had a crazy calf-cramp! Then i arrived too late and got drawn out of the race. Half of the runners there where surprised they didn't even make the cutoff, because they felt they were doing ok for a 100k race. The cutoff was pretty unfair IMHO, as the 5 hours are reaonable for good conditions, but more on the tight side. Mid-pack runners who paced conservatively/reasonable in the beginning didn't make it that day. If anything, the cutoff in tiefbrunnau tempted people to rush the slippy downhill down. Anyways, it was a great experience nonetheless and i learned a lot! As a consequence, i bought some quality raingear from compressport and merino socks and longsleeves. I'm now motivated to train in the rain, which i tended to avoid previously. Another upside is, i get another year of good training before finishing my first 100km race. So i can aim for a good time, while having a good time ;) How was the race for you?
