    A bit of pointless trivia for Ganryu's stage and why they named the song that way. The Tekken 1 stages, while not specifically tied to any one character, have loose ties to certain characters nonetheless. Yoshimitsu's catch phrased, heard throughout a lot of the Tekken games, is "Shiki soku zeku," for which a very loose translation is, "All things are in flux and nothing is permanent." And guess who Ganryu's rival in Tekken 1 is? Why yes, it's Yoshimitsu. I'll go you one further. Law's stage has a call back to the Rhythm of China track (Wang's stage music). Listen at around 1:39 to hear it. And Wang's rival in Tekken 1 is, that's right, Marshall Law. Yes, I know, I've heard this soundtrack way too much.

    T4 is by far the most cohesive Tekken game of the franchise; from the aesthetic to the soundscape. The individual aspects of most other Tekken installments are easier to pick apart and analyze on their own, but with T4 the visuals and audio feel almost inseparable. (Perhaps the closest they've gotten to that is T5 with the Urban Jungle stage and its soundtrack.) I wish Tekken would aspire to achieve this level of coherence again in the future. As a music lover with AP (absolute pitch) I never noticed how Lights sounds centered in the key of F major but a lot of the melodic movements just dance around that and refuse to resolve back to that note. It's interesting how even in the results screen after the dust has settled the game still wants to keep you on your toes. Some of the eerie tracks like Fear and Unknown actually bring to mind the Silent Hill soundtracks. That series does an amazing job of creating an ambiance of unsettling dread, rather than going for easy spikes of fear through jump scares, and its music reflects that idea. Hopefully you'll consider giving the soundtracks a listen as well, particularly the first 4 games. By the way, an interesting connection between Silent Hill and Tekken is the female singer for some of the SH tracks is Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, who is currently the voice actress for Nina in T7-T8. Anyway, thanks for this awesome review! Been enjoying your musical journey through the Tekken series so far, and can't wait to see the next ones!

    Dude you did Eddy's theme so dirty! The whole song is buildup, then the drums drop and leave you with a cool synth riff, and then the whole song climaxes in an incredible dance tune. Give it a listen again and have it in mind that the song is all buildup, and you'll enjoy it a lot more. I throw it on whenever I'm starting out a run and it helps me get pumped up and ready to crank out some miles!

      I always felt like it was the most perfect aesthetic for tekken. Music, stages, storytelling, narrator. Tekken IMO felt and looked so good with a darker and grimy aesthetic. I mean its fathers and sons killing each other for Christ sake lol. Still aesthetically my favorite tekken, made the character stories feel so much deeper.

    I've never really seen Heihachi as a sub-boss, so everytime I hear his arcade theme the only thing that rings on my mind is that his theme and Jin's are parallels with each other. Both have a very similar guitar riff and also both have a emergency vehicle-esque noise. Jin's sounds like the police have arrived, and Heihachi's sound like his police just got called and are on the way to give him armed support.

    Not sure it's mentioned in the comments here but SF2's health musical change was preceeded by Yie-Ar Kung Fu 7 years earlier in the 80's. It was a minor difference, what with the musical notes taken out and replaced with a shrill warning sound played over an underlying repetitive bass but it was one of the first to inject audible danger into a fighting game

    Tekken 4 story and aesthetic wise is def the best tekken. I actually dislike the story / vibe of many of the subsequent tekkens, despite the gameplay being great. Tekken 4 had a seriousness to it that really gave it a coolness / edge. The music is perfection, 'Fear' was my most listened to song in 2023 on Spotify.

    Really interesting video-essay, many well-written counterpoints and facts about interesting games and how they are ''meant'' to be consumed Anticipation & Disappointment is really relatable... Felt absolutely targeted at the next section, because i'm really deep into Funger, but never casually played it haha... I'm really enjoying though! Not all games are fun, this is the variety as you mentioned, Less is more, and that's really interesting! Playing correctly is a topic for another discussion... Matt Furniss's rearrangements of Mortal Kombat 1 & 2 for the Sega Genesis are honestly worth listening. Matt Furniss does an excellent job at taking Dan Forden's more atmospheric "malevolent kungfu fight scene" sound and turning it into funkier, more catchy fighting game music. I don't think any one version is better than the other; they compliment each other quite well, but the comparison between the two are certainly interesting.

  • @Hoarseplay
    @Hoarseplay 10 дней назад

    I hope you give a listen to the Namco System 246 arcade version of Tekken 4's soundtrack at some point (for fun, not a video). The songs' rearrangements from arcade to console are less drastic compared to previous Tekken games, but there are enough differences between them change the mood of some songs and even prefer one version over another.

    • @dinosulic101
      @dinosulic101 10 дней назад

      I did listen to them as „research“ for my long analysis of Tekken 4‘s OST (released 2 weeks ago if you haven‘t seen it yet ;)), but I honestly didn‘t find any differences that had me prefer it over the console version. Truth be told, I haven‘t given them as much time to convince me, but I had to cut down on something so the video doesn‘t get too long. It still came out at 50 minutes lmao

    • @Hoarseplay
      @Hoarseplay 10 дней назад

      @@dinosulic101 Fair enough. I suppose to someone more musically trained, the more nuanced differences between arcade & console arrangements are less important than the overall composition. (Personally, I think the different drums & voice synth in Bit Crusher, or the chanting crowd in Mob give the songs a different vibe) Nonetheless, I'm happy you listened to it at all. Tekken 4 was the beginning of Namco phasing out the arcade masters of their OSTs and instead focusing entirely on home arranges. As console hardware reached parity with the arcade, and with official arranged soundtracks getting more common, people (understandably) care less about these increasingly minute differences.

    You're so right about Fetus, it really makes you care for the struggles of the fighter who decided to participate the tournament. I bought this game when I was a kid and at that time I didn't understand English language all that well as it is not my native language, but the music really carried the emotion alongside the striking imagery. It is a fantastic track and one of my all time favorites when it comes to game OSTs.

    The robotic voice are a style element. It's purposely made to not be understood clearly. It has no meaning. It's just there to sound cool and futuristic Remember that this game came out at the verge of a new millenium with a brend new high tech console. So the trend was to make everything look and feel futuristic. I think there is also a video on youtube calling it the "digital apocalypse" or "The Atmosphere of Tekken 4" from Thegamingbritshow

    9:30 that effect was mainly for Jin (the character you see) and his character and past, the mission is controlled therefore after tekken 3 who went berserk he came, trained and now he's in control. Tekken 3, 4, 5 were the peak of Tekken series in my opinion, sure it had few paranormal stuff like a couple of players but it was primarily martial arts gaming , Tekken 4 had few more techniques from 3 and 5 had legit techniques from martial arts and I loved it. The music was also peak as well but from 6 and after they fell at everything by crossing them with other games and putting too many sci fi and paranormal stuff thus making like the rest of the modern series thus making it boring, even when it comes to the music applied the same

    (Downvotes incoming) Does Tekken 4 have good music? 🫤Somewhat. It’s not bad, but it wasn’t on par with the heyday of Tekken music as heard in Tekken 3 & or Tekken Tag. And things only got worse after Tekken 4, in terms of music in the games. So, while Tekken 4 doesn’t have “bad” music, it does mark the beginning of the decline in quality of music featured in Tekken games, which is still ongoing.

If you have free time, I recommend listen to the soundtrack of the original Fighter's History. Released in 1993, the OST was made by the band GAMADELIC As much as I like the music of its sequel (Fighter's History Dynamite), I much prefer the music of the first game. It is really underrated.
