Not The Video I Wanted To Make

Let's talk about it... Not the video I wanted to make, but had to make. Most of you know my finger (or at least the tendon in my finger) had been broken a couple of weeks ago. Last Thursday I finally could take the splint off I had been wearing for all those weeks. Where I thought I would simply do some exercises and get back into paddling, everything got turned upside down... Want to buy some ...
Things We Paddlers Don't Practice Enough
Просмотров 3973 года назад
It's easy to get into a rut, and do the same things we do every single week. And when we do go out and practice, we often practice the most exciting, bizarre and challenging techniques and rescues. But that means we sometimes can forget about practicing some of the most essential things.... That is why in today's video I go over some things I think most paddlers (myself included) don't practice...

    I have to go alone. But I've taken a class in person, took an online course with the ACA and hope to have a sea yak course soon as well. I started off with a Pelican 10 ft rec yak, but I've graduated to a Pakayak. I'm pleased with it although it is tippy. So I will increase my body contact with it in addition to, I hope my muscle memory kicks in so it's less tippy. Tyfs❤

    THE ALMOST PERFECT MURDER Down in the corner of Austria near Salzburg are the Lammarofen and Salzachofen. The German word "ofen" literally means oven but here translates to "a gorge". The Lammarofen is a small tight swirly run which will still get the best paddlers edgy and nervous. The Salzachofen is a large swirly run which can still get the best paddlers nervous and edgy. They were, however, first run back in the 1950's in fold boats. The Salzachofen was also the scene of a near perfect murder. The local paddlers had been eyeing the two stretches as a possible run but no one had plucked up the courage to attempt either of them. The local doctor and his wife set out one day to paddle the Salzach and put in some way upstream of the Salzachofen and paddled down to the take-out just above the "ofen". Here he pushed his wife in and then paddled down to the other end of the gorge and rescued his wife's body. His idea was to claim that his wife, also a noted keen kayak paddler, had fallen in on their attempt and drowned. Unfortunately the push was seen by another local paddler.

    I'm paddling for about 4 years now and really want to be able to paddle in winter, since that time brings not only the worst weather, but also the most beautiful, calm days. But... I'm not that athletic, or sporty (read: short, obese...) so finding suitable winter-kayaking-clothing is hard. Also, after trying some neoprene stuff early last summer, I quickly decided neoprene is definitely not for me. So my only option really is a drysuit. Due to the higher cost I don't have it yet, but I'm about to go shopping for some thermowear, paddling shoes or booties and.. a drysuit. I'm telling this to show there can be other factors that might shift one's interest from wet- to drysuit and vice versa.

    Thanks for the tip re layering under a wetsuit. 25 years ago I was a whitewater canoeist using Kokotat drysuit in winter and farmer john drysuit is spring/fall. 70yo now and using wetsuit for flatwater canoeing for exercise, wildlife viewing, and much river cleanup. Equipment has changed a bit. I like stretch seals which wetsuit has for ankles & wrists. Potomac river marshes below DC/Anacostia are covered with plastic, glass, and aluminum, mostly bottles and cans. Wish heavy river littering was drowning offense.

    All pogies are terrible for whitewater because they interfere with the paddle feel. I am working on an alteration that will prevent pogies from bunching up between my finger tips and palm.

  • @rogerpalin5864
    @rogerpalin5864 Год назад

    Out of curiosity l just went to watch Seth’s video. This is not what he says at all. Well a little bit. Kokatat do put their break away buckle on the quick release chest harness. But this is done by the manufacturer and not a modification by Seth. So if the user of the Kokatat PFD is unable to pull the chest harness release, then it will still release from the break away buckle, as designed by Kokatat. Your home made set up on the other hand, is connected to a ring with 14kn breaking force, so definitely won’t release in an emergency! I think the message here is you need to be very careful what you watch online and how you interpret it. And then, how quickly someone can go from inexperienced novice to instructor just from watching a video. Even then sometime the elite don’t follow best practice, as their environment is pretty specific as well. As an example, Alex Honnold does a love of climbing without ropes but l wouldn’t suggest this is the way ahead for most climbers. As people have previous commented, you need to attend a professional certified safety and rescue course. If you’re in the Uk, let’s go for a paddle 😀

  • @rogerpalin5864
    @rogerpalin5864 Год назад

    In answer to your question, l do think you’re making a big mistake to be honest. Firstly, why do you need a cows tail? Towing? Well there’s definitely better, more effective and safer ways to tow. Realistically, the chest harness is for live bait swimmers or securing bank belays, both risky, complex and rare situations. Secondly, that little weak plastic D ring you rejected, is specifically designed for the chest harness. It is made of plastic so will break very easily and actually the back bar has a gap in it, so it gives even easier and therefore is not a risk to use. What is a risk to use, is the cows tail itself, as you are using it. 1. As slack as you are is creating a big snag hazard and 2. With a snap gate carabiner, which is another big no-no, as it presents an accidental clip, as many people have found out to their cost. Nice knife, but leash needs to be removable, what if you need to pass it to someone or use it away from your PFD. Whistles need to be on elastic and long enough, so that you can move your head around without it being pulled from you mouth.

    I performed K1m in my youth end of the 60ties, short before it get Olympic discipline in Augsburg. I started for the German youth Championship on the old Eiskanal 1970 when in the lower part the Bulldozers were grabbing the new chanel. long ago and end with racing due to school and job education in 71. The boots were different minimum 4 m long instead of 3,5 and with bigger volume according knowlege of that time. The gates had red pins left and green pins right, like ships lighting. Upstream gates got an A (In German aufwärts) mark beside the number and ther were gates on the course minimum one with an R at the number for reward passing. It was not allowed to undercut the gate with the boat front part, officially alss with the rear but this rule was difficult to observe and was as i remember at the end of the 60ties not penalted unless you did not hit the pin with the boat, like today. The penalty was 10 sec. for contact of a pin from inside per pin, so if you touch both red and green you got 20 seconds. If you touch from outside you got 50 sec. If you miss a gate 100 sec. When you look on the competion until the beginning 90ties the paddelind of the paddlers looks not so dynamic like today, because of the rules and the safety to prevent penalties with the longer boats and the risk of front undercut enter a gate

    A couple friends tagged a gold medal in the '92 Olympics in C2, Joe Jacobi / Scott Strausbaugh. Their boat has been hanging in the Natahala Outdoor Center restaurant for a few years. It's a shame that most people working there don't have a clue of the history of the boat especially since they are hometown guys. I'm a big fan of the C2 class, it's a shame it's been dropped.

      I have no clue why the USCOC didn't ADD C-2 W and C2 Mixed in addition to the existingC-2 Mens class as well as adding C-1W when they did. The Host country spent millions of dollars to build the artificial river, so why not get more use out of it getting more athletes involved, more ticket and vendor revenue and more exposure for the sport on TV. Maybe it goes back to 1981 when the ICF had a C-2 Mixed class in Bala Wales' World championships and the US team swept all three medals. The Euros didn't like that and the class vanished quickly. There certainly should be equal classes for guys and gals as is the current program, but what a ruckus it would bring if the Flatwater sprint competition was reduced to 4 classes and only 1 race length

    A local pond had a 'Try Kayak' event last year. I was excited to try it, but was not dressed for the potential of getting wet. I was wearing a gray tee shirt, long blue jeans, white socks and low cut Jordan 1's (which I left on cuz what's the chance my shoes will get wet)?? I got in the kayak and was doing well!! The wave action was a little choppy and I thought I was going to tip over a few times, but I didn't! I was still in the deep water and was then making a turn in the water to head back to shore. Just as I made the turn, this guy on the kayak was coming toward mrle at great speed and made no effort to stop. His kayak hit mine in the 'sweet spot' and I tipped over into the water! I climbed out, the water was up to my chest... He's like 'Sorry, dude! You're really soaked now'. Well, yeah!! As I tried to climb back in, he noticed I had jeans and shoes on and was like 'Damn you wearing all your clothes! Sorry, man.' I got back in the kayak and paddled back to shore. I wan't the only one wet, but I had the most clothes on. My jeans were waterlogged and my shoes were squishy and oozing out water. You really can get wet kayaking, so please dress appropriately! I was at least glad I left my phone in the car, 'just in case'..

    In England some people have discovered that pogies are good for cyclists too. And I can believe it. I went out one night on my bike and couldn't find my propper winter gloves. So I put wooly gloves on and put a plastic bag over the top. It worked better than some propper winter gloves. First line of defence. Keep the weather off, wind and wet.

      Cold shock I feel is from surprise but if you know how it feels and what to expect I feel like it can be managed. Went kayaking last week, and the air temp was 27 degrees. We walked across 3 frozen lakes and had a great time. We had spare clothes in dry bags and had one person dump, but we we were only 30 min from home at that point so he didn't even change clothes. Once the water in his waders warmed he was good to go. We also had extra gloves and good layers on and along... Just be prepared for the worst, we also have stripped down to swim in the ice water at times to see our reactions in a controlled environment.
