OKSew
Добавлен 2 ноя 2011
Hi! I’m Nicole - originally from Australia, I now live in the US with my husband and 4 kids. I like to consider myself a “beginner’s teacher”, helping you perfect the basics so you can build the confidence to master more complex projects. My motto is, if you can sew and cut a straight line, you can sew any bag. And if you can't sew and cut a straight line yet, I can teach you how! I love to share all the tips and tricks I have picked up over the years. There is a Socrates quote, "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's (sic) writings so that you shall come easily by what others have labored hard for", and that is how I think about bagmaking.
In 2020 I began running sewalongs for Geek Garden Fabric which led to the creation of OKSew for easy sharing of tutorials. The name came about from how many times I started a sentence with “Okay, so…” in my early videos. If you wish you can follow my page Lion & Loch, where I share my finished bags.
So, let’s get going!

In this skill builder tutorial I will demonstrate how to add a vinyl trim to a zipper gusset without any raw edges. It is suggested to use an accent vinyl that is on the thinner side for best results. If working with thicker materials attaching the trim first then installing the zipper is the method I would recommend.

Your creations are Beautiful
Thank You! Absolutely loved this tutorial. I've never thought to use a skewer to fill in the gap! I use a hanging sock dryer to hang my items to dry
This is a really nice video and easy to follow. One suggestion I’d have is to use a lining with a definite right/wrong side to help see which side goes up where. Thanks.
Thank you Jean! I will absolutely pay more attention to my lining choices, thank you for the suggestion!
I love this video. Don't ever apologize for your explanations. Just do it girl!
Thank you! ☺️
You are the best - thank you
Thank you Nancy 🥰
Thank you for your pro tips. This is exactly what I needed to refine my pieces.
Thank you so much! I love your patterns & tutorials.
I just came across this "after" viewing your Pythagorean Pouch boxed corner method (OMG). I enlarged the pattern at 120%, and it worked like a charm, and I have a Mac!! Thx much!!
Appreciate you have showed ALL ways to make logi
Great tutorials thank you for sharing these great awesome patterns, I know you said these needs to be sewn on cork or vinyl. But, for my curiosity can it be possible to make them out of canvas or cotton fabric??
Where do you buy your vinyl love these patterns
Thanks for a great tutorial video and the pattern.
Brilliant! Thanks ❤
Thank you for this in-depth tutorial. The best I’ve ever seen. Lucky me the day I found your Channel.
Wonderful and thorough tutorial. Thanks sew much.
How would you keep foam in place if it’s not iron on?
Hi Linda! I would cut it bigger - either the same size as your exterior and baste it at the edges, using a zig zag stitch within the seam allowance to reduce bulk, or I would cut it at the suggested width but make it the same height as the exterior and baste it within the seam allowance just at the top & bottom.
Can’t wait to try this. Thanks for another great pattern!
Adorable
Such a cute and well-designed pouch. Thank you for the pattern. ❤
What a fabulous little bag. You’re a great teacher
Love this! Cant wait to share my Penny!
Typically I absolutely hate a Math lesson but you just made it interesting and make sense 😮😮😮😮❤
Very cool!
Thank you for the versatile pattern shapes you included in your PDF file. I look forward to sewing these up. I am intrigued by the metal clips you are using. Could you please share where you purchased them.
I got mine on Amazon, but I believe Jax & Lo also sells them. I will get you a link to the ones I bought. I removed the rubber tips because they kept sticking to my material when I removed the clips and I sewed through them on more than one occasion. 😂
WHY DO I HAVE TO INSTALL THE ZIPPER TWICE?! Not everyone is as good with zippers as you are! And why when the fabric is inside out?
Hi Tricia, I’m sorry that aspect of this pattern is causing you frustration! This method of zipper installation is necessary for the seamless base of the bag and to ensure you get nicely lined up seams, but if applying the pull twice is causing a problem you can alternatively baste the open end closed rather than pulling the zipper all the way off to close the open end. This patterns was intended as a boxy adaptation of my Logi pattern so uses the same techniques as I did for that bag. Knowing that boxy videos are a dime a dozen and use similar methods I wanted to give an alternative to the other options out there. I do have a video that focuses on applying zipper pulls that I have received great feedback on if it is something you would like to practice more (Get Your Pulls On! - Mastering zipper by the yard (without any aids!) ruclips.net/video/ijli0BGm4vo/видео.html). An alternative to this method of doing the zipper would be to make your zipper much longer to start with, having a long tail at one end (or both, if doing s double zipper) and applying the pulls however best works for you, then trimming the tape to size at the end of construction. A long dress zipper could also be used, with the open end basted closed rather than pulling the zipper off completely and reapplying. I will be sure to address different ways of doing the zipper in future videos to account better for frustrations with using zipper by the yard. I hope that helps!
This way of doing the zipper could be used on the Bee Boxy and may be preferable to you: Logi Pouch - Directional Print Version with Ready to Sew Premade Zipper ruclips.net/video/vNrQMt9F25g/видео.html
And to answer your second question, the bag needs to be sewn up inside out, I found that if I applied the pulls with the pouch right side out then turned it, more often than not the pulls came off while turning. If you want to put the pulls on right side out you could baste the ends of the zipper to keep them from coming off while turning.
Thank you for the pattern. Watching this video has reminded me that I have some lightweight leather offcuts that will be perfect, I bought the bag of offcuts some years ago to make some covered buttons for a jacket but still have some excess. Now, they will become Penny Purses...thanks again.
That sounds like a great plan! Those will be lovely Pennies!
Love it
I'm planning to use my cutting machine for this-thanks for this tutorial and pattern
You are very welcome! The SVGs will be ready soon, I just need to add a couple of the slip pocket options as they were a late addition at the request of the test group.
Thank you I love all your videos you share ♥
Thank you Jen!
Where did you get the great material for the Penny Pouch? Thank u for the free pattern!!!
It's from Oh So Pretty! You are most welcome.
Thanks again for a great tutorial and for the free patterns. I love it! 😊
Many supermarkets have budget ranges. Some plain budget shower curtains are robust enough to be used as a lining (I love white or light coloured linings in my small bags.). Just have an experiment first, when you pull it does it stretch a little, or does it tear? Sew through a corner, have the needle holes created a perforation so you can tear the corner off.? Some craft clear vinyl can be fine grade and fairly supple, and easy to sew, but of course you cannot really crease it.
This is a great idea! HTV would be another option. Thank you for sharing your tips!
Thank you so much for the tutorial and free pattern. Your tutorial are always helpful tips and useful information for someone like me that started sewing about 6 months ago. When I watch your tutorial, it answers some of my issues I come across working on projects. For example, how to center zipper within windows. I also appreciate your free patterns. I love watching your tutorials, thank you!
I am so glad to hear this! One of my goals is to give tips that can be used on lots of different patterns to get you a great result. Thanks so much for being here!
absolutely awesome tutorial....I love the Penny Purse...Thank You so much for the free pattern.. You are a great teacher
Thank you so much!
I was going to mop my floors, but this looks like a lot more fun!
I could not agree more!
Another great pattern and instructions, as always, thanks!

Thank you Nancy!
Great video! Very nicely done. 😊
Thank you! So helpful!
You are so welcome!
Thank you for sharing your patterns and your "how to's" are great!
In another video, do you show how you turned the end of the zipper to the side?

thus tutorial helped me so much! thank you for the template tfs:)
Great tutorial I do it the same way
Love love this tutorial! I made the Betty pouch and applied the same technique to another zipper pouch. It worked so well with the straight side edges.. the only thing I stopped doing in stapling the seams together as it scratched up my Bernina sewing machine table 😔 which is not good. I pin the seams instead. Everything else from this tutorial is very good and makes the finish pouches well made. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us.
Oh dear, yes that was the right decision for you! I am so glad to hear the techniques have been otherwise helpful for you.
Thank you! Very informative. I'll have your video running when I finally get around to trying this! 🙂
Wonderful video! I would like to add that if you sand in one direction, you will get a smoother surface. Also, best practice is to pour a bit of the paint or base coat into a small dish and use from there. Dipping the tool or skewer into the bottle introduces contaminates and will ruin the paint or base coat. And if you use the gum trag or Tokonole to any project, vinyl or leather, you really can’t add paint. The paint will peel off over time .
Thank you for adding these tips!
Where did you find that teal vinyl?? I love it!
The embossed one? It is from My Punkbroidery.
Lighter to burn off fibers!! 😮 🤯 Thanks for this excellent tutorial! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Glad it was helpful!
