OKSew
Добавлен 2 ноя 2011
Hi! I’m Nicole - originally from Australia, I now live in the US with my husband and 4 kids. I like to consider myself a “beginner’s teacher”, helping you perfect the basics so you can build the confidence to master more complex projects. My motto is, if you can sew and cut a straight line, you can sew any bag. And if you can't sew and cut a straight line yet, I can teach you how! I love to share all the tips and tricks I have picked up over the years. There is a Socrates quote, "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's (sic) writings so that you shall come easily by what others have labored hard for", and that is how I think about bagmaking.
In 2020 I began running sewalongs for Geek Garden Fabric which led to the creation of OKSew for easy sharing of tutorials. The name came about from how many times I started a sentence with “Okay, so…” in my early videos. If you wish you can follow my page Lion & Loch, where I share my finished bags.
So, let’s get going!

Add Vinyl Trim to Your Zipper Panel (No Raw Edges!)
Просмотров 5 тыс.2 месяца назад
In this skill builder tutorial I will demonstrate how to add a vinyl trim to a zipper gusset without any raw edges. It is suggested to use an accent vinyl that is on the thinner side for best results. If working with thicker materials attaching the trim first then installing the zipper is the method I would recommend.

Thank You😊
I love your teaching style. You give a lot of great tips and you are very thorough. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I tried this and it is the best! Thanks so much!
I know I am a day or 2 late😂😂😂 but this is very helpful... I have always cut out the extra fabric but this is good thank you
Such a cute idea to use scraps and add interest.
🤯 You just made me understand geometry after DECADES of it not making sense, and huge bonus that it has to do with sewing!!!! Thank you!!!!
Such a comprehensive tutorial with so many tips along the way. Love your work! Forgot to add that I love the lining you used in the blue bag (imho) a printed lining adds a nice touch to a perfect bag...and generally I'm not a 'blue' fan either..LOL
Impressive ❤ great job 👏👏
I have learnt so much from this video - thank you so much, my pouches are going to be so much better from now on!
Amazing!❤ It's very hard work!
La mejor explicación que he visto!!!!! Ahora sé que no era culpa mía, sino del patrón. Millones de gracias!!!
You are brilliant! Thank you for this!
FANTASTIC! Thank you!
At 41:11, what is that pink tool to melt your threads called?
Hi! It’s a thread zapper. I chat about the different ones I have used here but you can also find it on Amazon. Thread Zapper - OKSew Favourite Things ruclips.net/video/WKQQXC7iSUg/видео.html
I appreciate how you think “outside the box” and get the nice result! ❤ chuchie
When you turn the corner, should the needle be on the way up or on the way down? Sometimes my corners don't look right. Thanks!
Hi! The needle should be all the way down (so not still going down, at it’s maximum), or slightly coming up. The needle catches the bobbin at the bottom of the stitch so if it hasn’t gone all the way down before you turn it will miss the bobbin on the corner stitch when you turn the fabric. It can take a bit of practice to get a feel for that particular point in the stitch on your machine so I like to check it has made the stitch properly before continuing on. If that does happen though I have a quick fix that might help: Skipped Corner Stitch - An OKSew Quick Fix ruclips.net/video/v54_lKKm9Es/видео.html
@OKSew474 Thank you ❤️
You are the bag QUEEN!
I really enjoyed your video. I picked up some nice tips for sewing bags from you. Thank you.
Wow I have made thousands of bags and I thought I was sewing wrong or cutting wrong…so this is a great way. Thanks for sharing with..learned so much much from this. ✂️🧵✂️🧵✂️✂️
The BEST video on the subject hands down!
Thanks so much! It’s very helpful to watch these steps…been wanting to do this technique!
Great tip. Thanks for sharing. ❤
My mind has blown like a firecracker. Thank you for figuring out the problem with boxed bottom bags!
Happy to help! Thank you! 🥰
I learned so much! Thank you ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for your tutorial. I absolutely love it.
You are so welcome!
Thank you for sharing. I’m new at bag making. Your tips have helped me tremendously. I just have one question, how much smaller do you cut your bag lining? Many thanks.
About 1/2” total per dimension, but I taper from the top so that where the lining meets the exterior it is the same size. I am going to do a demonstration on this soon as it’s such an important skill!
@@OKSew474 Thank you, look forward to seeing that. I love your teaching style. Just a side note, I live in South Africa, and we can’t get all the amazing fabrics and accessories for bag making that are available in the USA. 😏
I’d like to get some pretty tags. Where do you get yours?
These are where I get mine! Cork Tags: www.etsy.com/shop/AllThisWood (It looks they are on break until October 2024) Coloured Vinyl Tags: facebook.com/share/hytNF7fgTMp8SEXX/?mibextid=K35XfP
Are you using a 1/2" seam allowance to assemble the the final stage of the pouch? Very clear and quite helpful. Thanks
Hi! I used 3/8” for the side & bottom seams.
Thanks! Great idea & video!
Great idea! Thank you for sharing! It was nice to meet you at Sew Whatever Studio and thank you for the cute stickers!
It was so lovely to meet you Janice!
I love this! Where do you get your vinyl?
The vinyl I am using in this video is from Oh So Pretty but I also get vinyl from My PunkBroidery, Emmaline Bags, My Handmade Space, and Geek Garden Fabric.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Also, where do you get your logo tags or do you make them yourself?
Thank you! This is where I get my tags: Cork Tags: www.etsy.com/shop/AllThisWood (It looks they are on break until October 2024) Coloured Vinyl Tags: facebook.com/share/hytNF7fgTMp8SEXX/?mibextid=K35XfP
Thanks especially for the hint to downloand first, then print from the pdf program!💕
So glad to help!
I love this tip! I have a lot of scraps and this would be a great way to whittle that pile down 🤣 Thanks for another excellent tutorial 👏🩷
Absolutely! And the tiny off cuts that are so hard to part with!
Super cute idea. I’ve learned so many neat tips and tricks from your channel. Love your teaching methods!
Thanks so much! 😊
Thanks Nicole for this cute little pouch great sew when you need something quick ❤
You are most welcome! 🥰
I missed the instructions on how to sew zipper into pocket?
I sew the zipper pocket & lining to the overlay from about 16:30 but as this video is intended to work for different styles of zipper pockets you don’t see me sew the zipper on to the pocket lining in this video; for further instruction on that my video on interior pockets will help: ruclips.net/video/Sn-NZg1RQ7Y/видео.htmlsi=qZwSCqi6CEeD9NLi
I love all of your videos! Can you tell me what fabric line that is that you’re using?
Thank you! The florals at the beginning are from Rifle Paper Co, the pink floral is from Wolf & Rabbit custom fabric.
The explanation of adjusting the bottoms, the bending of the zipper, and the use of double-sided tape were all eye opening to me!! -This from somebody who has been sewing for 50 years. You are brilliant!!!
Thank you! ☺️
Thanks again!
Thank you! 🥰
Can you put a link to the double sided tape?
This is the one I use: a.co/d/gYdhTJH
Beautiful work! I can't wait to try these ideas. Where can I get the pattern for the Pythagorean one?
Thanks Tammy! It’s in the description of the Better Boxed Bottoms video: ruclips.net/video/RQM_pZOQiS0/видео.htmlsi=Ut6TNZtTekaQZDYp This shows you where to look to download: ruclips.net/video/RWXx7XyHOSs/видео.htmlsi=ycuNeznYjw2AzwJE

Thank you Michelle!

You are such a good teacher ❤. I have been spending 3 days watching your Iris video, it's such a lovely pattern, and you describe everything so well. All things you learned me - I am so grateful 🥰. Now my Marimekko Iris bag is almost completed, the only thing missing is the rivets. Yesterday I sewed the band with 2 different textiles. it turned out wonderful. I almost feel like I've been a bag university. So professor Nicole, thank you so much for all you taught me, and I wishing you and your family a wonderful evening. Hugs from Sweden
Thank you so much Carina! ❤️
You have amazed me! I have wondered what was wrong with my bag corners. Thanks
Thank you!!!🎉❤
