A Geordie, a Mackem, and a Welsh terrier decide to sail around the UK... And then keep going!
ONE THING AFTER ANOTHER. S2. E24. Sailing to Cedeira and A Coruña.
Hello sailors and welcome back to Northern Spain.
This week, we begin by investigating our broken tiller pin before taking a break and going on a long walk with Yewy the Welsh Terrier. Afterwards, we give her a bath... She was not impressed 😁
Passage one: we sail from Viveiro to Cedeira before having anchor issues. We considered pushing on through the nice to A Coruña but managed to fix the windlass and go in for another attempt.
Passage two: after a few nights on anchor we moved on to A Coruña.
If you enjoy this episode, please consider buying us a coffee ☕ (or a 🍺) at www.buymeacoffee.com/sailinghjem to help keep us afloat!

Why not put the autopilot arm in position and tie it into place with dyneema. 👍🇪🇸
@robertmoreland2638 that could work as a temp fix, but alas I didn’t have any dyneema! The tiller arm can exert up to 3.5 tonnes as well, so it’s a canny bit of force. Thankfully the power of the internet means getting spares isn’t that hard, even after Brexit does its best to slow things down!
@ I find it easier, quicker and cheaper to jump on a plane for spares for my Thornycroft BMC 1.8. I’ve had so many parts sat in Madrid and then returned . 😂👍🇪🇸

Hey guys, another fab episode thanks 🙏 Question, as you know i will head down next June UK to Gibraltar and our Bavaria does not have a Radar, thinking do i need one as i will be only day sailing harbour harbour and we have AIS Transceiver. Cant decide do i get radar or not. Appreciate your thoughts and did you use yours much on journey ?
@@SailingSeaStar_ hello there! You’re very welcome and thank YOU for taking the time to say hello! Well we have a radar but our repeater screen is an LCD from 1998 and I think it’s practically useless for short range radar use. So we never used ours. When we circumnavigated the UK, we didn’t have AIS, but we installed a transceiver in the winter which repeats onto the iPad Navionics and it was an absolute Godsend for us, we love it! It’s pretty much guaranteed that you’ll encounter fog in Northern Spain and Portugal during the summer, so a radar technically would be useful in that scenario. But you’ll be doing the same sailing as we did, harbour to harbour during the day as much as possible, so we didn’t miss a radar this season at all. 90% of all boats we saw at sea were on AIS, the remaining 10% mainly small fishing or sailing vessels. In the fog we use AIS and keep a keen lookout. A radar can be useful to detect squalls and in the Med, this can be useful in certain areas. But at the moment I’m trying to work out if an old radar can be used with new screens etc, a rabbit hole I’m not out of yet! Hope that’s helpful!
@@sailinghjemvery helpful thanks 🙏 I’m guessing your boat is all moored up for winter or are you continuing into the med? Be interested to hear as I think you went to Africa coast not Gibraltar
@@SailingSeaStar_ yes, it was 23 degrees here in Gibraltar last week but it’s starting to cool down now, so we’re tucked away for the winter living onboard. We had intended to head over to Morocco to winter there, but a well priced berth in Gibraltar became available and we decided to give it a try, given there are no visa issues etc.

You seem like very pleasant folks. But the drama seems oversold. The sailing seemed completely calm, then you motored, had breakfast, saw some orcas for a moment and arrived. Was there any real danger, or incidents or that justifies the self-drama. I guess you need drama if your soliciting patrons but this seems like what most folks would encounter on a day sailing. Good luck with your adventures
Shame you feel that way. Best wishes!
I should of course have mentioned that that was in gijon. Cheers Peter.
My oh my how things have changed. In 1982 we tied up to the same seawall(no marina berths then) and every day a very nice older gentleman came to collect the port dues. Been meaning to comment for ages! 😂 Thanks for the tip for rounding Portland Bill when I asked, worked a treat 👌🏻 Have you guys not tried lasso the cleat from onboard using the midship line? I’d hate to see Faye slip whilst jumping off the pontoon to get the bow line on,🙈 much safer if you can do it from on deck 👍🏻
@@martinbirdiebrain1912 hiya Martin! We’ve tried everything now. If the pontoon is long enough, midship lines are wonderful. But most of the time the pontoon is waaaay too short, so midship line is not so helpful. I like a lasso, but Faye gets struck by an antigravity pulsatron every time she throws a line from the boat and it ends up in the water 😂
s a sailor… red white red, means nor able to move…That’s in colregs. When flashing it could be government / research vessel. A special marker. One that’s not moving. Its confusing, because a red light flashing is dangerous cargo, or fishing white flashing in sea state can look like flashing but may be just the waves.
@@waltervanderboor yeah, we know this, but despite the Yachtmaster theory and years sailing around, we hadn’t seen light pattern before! Incidentally red, white, red means restricted in ability to manoeuvre rather than not able to move.

Hi thanks for the video, was interested how much Boatfolk marina cost.
Hello! Boatfolk marinas vary on cost all around the UK, more south tend to be more expensive. And of course it also depends on your boat length. I think we paid £3,600 a year for a 41ft boat in North Shields. If you go on the Boatfolk website, they have the rate cards for all of their marinas, so you can easily find out the cost for your boat 👍🏼

Hi. I am not sure if real time has overtaken this comment but here goes. Time to learn to pole out your genny. Downwind sailing with the penny poled out to windward is oh so good. With the roller furler it is very easy to set up and use. Only use a topping lift. Attach windward sheet to pole end fitting. Lay pole against the forestay with the boom raised so that the end fitting is same height as clew with the pole near horizontal (easy if you have a sliding mast track)and unfurl while taking up with the sheet winch. Putting away is the reverse. You can put out as much or as little as you like. Try it and see. Cheers Peter.

We were just talking about the crappy shower/toilet block at Camaret Sur Mer 😂 We also stayed at Audierne one night on a mooring buoy but a few nights inside the main marina. Nice town. Glad Ywey got to share that enormous steak. She deserves it!
They're like something out of a horror film! Absolute disgrace... Unlike that steak which was amazeballs yum yum
Awesome video you three 🙏👍 glad all was well with the orcas that day. Can’t wait to do the same passage next year. Looking forward to your next ones and to hear what your plans are next summer, more Mediterranean? Thanks
After that we have been keeping our eyes peeled for the black and white meanies the entire way.
Well done! Did you report the Orca interaction? The Cruising Association are compiling research on all interactions , in conjunction with European bodies. Hope you are all well. Best wishes from Dartmouth. James
We certainly did report it! Thanks for the well wishes!
