Thickened epoxy is your friend. Wood dowles are a bad idea. Also, over drill new holes and fill with thickened epoxy and then drill to proper size to keep deck core dry.
Thanks for the advice Paul. We’d never worked with epoxy before and we’d heard horror stories of curing gone terribly, awful mess etc etc etc so we were quite nervous about using it. I actually really enjoyed working with it, shades of old science classes 😃 I’m looking forward to getting onto a few chips and dings that were in the boat when we got her. But I’m defo going to wait for some warmer and less windy weather first!
Good job on those hatches. How soul destroying when it still leaks. I changed a rubber in the heads port light and it was worse after I did it than before despite taking my time. Turned out I had the rubber the wrong way around (all looked the same).

Butyl needs to be tightened a touch until it is fully seated. It isn't truly 'compressed' at first. Keep tightening, and if you've used enough tightening over a day or so will sort it.

When butyl is warm it softens so don’t panic if they drip. They just need a nip to tighten. Also get a pack of grinding heads for the Dremel, they’re great on epoxy.
@@sailinghjem Decent Butyl should be fine. It's much better than 3M. Only trick to it is to give it a bit of a tighten after a day as it tends to need a day or so to compress.
If your boat has a balsa core you may be in for some trouble. I would have liked to see you oversize the new holes and use the syringe and epoxy to fill them and then redrill them. It works nicely to protect the hole from allowing water to penetrate any core. I don't use dowels either - just epoxy with microspheres or microfibres depending on the job.
Unfortunately from many places, some more than others. The bedding was giving way but to were the actual hatches as well. But they were 25 years old. It was actually difficult to see through them too as the acrylic was so crazed. During last season, our first, we used Vaseline to try and help the gaskets but it was clear we needed to do a lot more. We looked into replacement gaskets, acrylic, hinges etc but the cost of the components were more expensive than a new hatch, which we couldn’t believe!
`as im watching the dowel bit im thinking no no no if/ when it shrinks it would leave a void, all the channels ive watched fiill the hole completly with epoxy or thickened epoxy , ok on with the next bit
Not that you need this comment at this point.., all boat jobs suck...all, and will take you 3 times longer than you think. On the other hand, you will get better and faster, and strangely care less about the perfection of the job. Also you'll be able to nod sagely when someone complains about the same work. From one Catalina owner to another, it's nice to see one across the pond! Catalina's sail well, and are good stiff boats.
Thank you so much Peter for sharing your very wise words. I particularly have found that my sense of perfectionism in each job has, as you’ve suggested would happen, dramatically reduced! I now look for a ‘solid, that’ll do’ standard and my sanity is better off for it!
@@sailinghjemI agree! I also find there is overlap in how you can solve seemingly different issues with the same approach making it easier over time. One upside to having to fix different things is eventually you become the 'Doctor" and simply know what is wrong by the way it sounds or looks! You look like a magician! 😂

Thanks for the feedback. We finished all of the holes with epoxy, so they should all be watertight!

To get epoxy into small spaces, just cut a corner off a small plastic bag and use like an icing bag. Less mess, cheap.
