LOL, at 0:47 "...have you write in every time they have to go to the bathroom..." My novel is "framed." That is, as in Princess Bride, there is a "framing" plot line where a protagonist is relating a "framed" story to another protagonist. That story is quite long, so I built in literal "Pee Breaks" into the framing story. They serve a purpose, to allow the listening character some peace and quiet to think about what's been said.

5:16 "...obviously all those pieces are different cogs that have to work together in the bigger plot machine..." But do they? The "verse" of my novel necessarily has networks and connections of cause and effect that create thousands of potential story lines that have absolutely nothing (except canon) in common with the characters and plot of the novel this background was created for. Or am I misunderstanding, and are you saying that the "bigger plot machine" IS the general "plot line" of the Universe wherein the novel is set? This applies in the current verse when, for example, a minor shady character mentioned briefly in flashback is so damned interesting I have to avoid the temptation to drop the current novel and do one about him. This applies historically, as well. For example, to consistently present the current relationship between the bug-eyed tentacled monstrous aliens and their world's version of humans, I have to create the history of each species, and their often-adversarial relationships with each other throughout that history. There is a lot of room there for historical swashbuckler sword play dragon-slaying drama that has nothing do do with starships and space pirates.

Amazing piece content! I became a proofreader and copyeditor by chance, it has been five years now working with academic publications. Great question! From Erika: "A good place to start, for copyediting especially, is The Copyeditor's Handbook by Amy Einsohn (along with the practice workbook companion, The Copyeditor's Workbook). I also recommend The Subversive Copyeditor by Carol Fisher Saller (one of contributing editors for CMOS) for more on negotiating relationships with writers and being a compassionate and diligent editor. Also, the brand new book The Chicago Guide to Copyediting Fiction by Amy Schneider is excellent for the nuances of fiction copyediting, but gives an excellent primer on how copyeditors keep style sheets as they work, what details they're looking for to maintain consistency, and other tips on the copyediting mindset. Hope this helps!"

My first thought is the most recent Mad Max. The entire audience is adrenaline pumped for so long, all through the chase scene. Then the storm hits and knocks out everyone. The audience collectively took a deep breath. One of the most compelling edits to a film in a long while. I use this scene to remind myself how to drive action then pause.

More than writing the three books we have planned together, what makes me feel like I could fail to publish them is all the little tasks around them! Getting ISBN numbers is free in El Salvador, but it's also a chore. I need to design covers, do typesetting for ebook and print, create social media images and videos to promote them, set them up on Kindle and on a couple ARC platforms.... Oof. I'm exhausted just writing all that.
