I like to give most of my characters contradictory, personality traits and give my characters two different wants and fears. I use something called the enneagram personality test as a backbone. It also can help flesh out what your character could want or fear.
Definitely! But you'll also want it to have a serious component as well, since it is clearly important to the main character, enough to push them to do whatever they need to do in the story. But a mix of both is never a bad thing!
