I'd say it definitely works to get the reader invested , but it needs to be done well.

I think I good rule of thumb is that you should start your story with whatever makes up the bulk of the reason that a reader would want to read your story. If that's action, start with action. If it's character, start with character. If you're a bit literary and that's theme and prose, you can even get away with starting with exposition haha.

Well, when I started writing, I felt I made slow burner, explaining the world and what's going on with the characters and I remember I gave rough draft to my brother to read and he said, "It's unreadable and boring..."
It can be a hard balance to find!
