Amazing piece content!
I became a proofreader and copyeditor by chance, it has been five years now working with academic publications.
Is there any book you would recommend (apart from The Chicago Manual)?
I only occasionally work with articles or books written in english, but I would love to learn more about the editorial process.
Great question! From Erika: "A good place to start, for copyediting especially, is The Copyeditor's Handbook by Amy Einsohn (along with the practice workbook companion, The Copyeditor's Workbook). I also recommend The Subversive Copyeditor by Carol Fisher Saller (one of contributing editors for CMOS) for more on negotiating relationships with writers and being a compassionate and diligent editor. Also, the brand new book The Chicago Guide to Copyediting Fiction by Amy Schneider is excellent for the nuances of fiction copyediting, but gives an excellent primer on how copyeditors keep style sheets as they work, what details they're looking for to maintain consistency, and other tips on the copyediting mindset. Hope this helps!"
