The Beatles 'Now and Then': It's 2023 and There's a New Song!
Thank you for honoring Ryan Adams and for standing up for him after what he endured from cancel culture. Ryan Adams RULES!!
Currently my favorite song writer. Truly a special musician, so prolific and such a broad spectrum of song types.
I love his music watched him at gigs amazing and talented , just don’t like him as a person, it’s ok as I don’t know him from Adam.
Adam’s did all this to himself. And what you leave out is that he admitted to his bad behavior. I find organizing to cancel people problematic but I think personally canceling people is just fine. I stopped supporting Adams (going to his shows buying the music) in the early 2010s due to his treatment of people who work the music venues he played at here in Chicago. I know people who have worked his shows and the stories of RA treating people like crap, like they are beneath him are legion. I don’t care how talented someone is, if you are a garbage person, then you are a garbage person. Maybe you feel the need to get chap stick all over someone’s pants because they can write a good song but not me.
Your points are all well considered. Unfortunately the arts in general are full of people that are assholes or 'garbage' people. Each of us as consumers of those arts has the personal choice to make whether they will support those artists' work or not. I respect and understand your personal decision to not support Ryan Adams.
The music press is woke and he is a straight white male. There’s your answer. Same reason why Rock has been stamped out, frankly.
Yeah but he's such a turd. I feel like he makes himself so unlikeable that it affects how people hear his music.
Ryan Adams? I love Bryan Adams, he should’ve changed his name
Ryan is an absolutely AMAZING song writer and performer. Prolific, Melodic, Rocker, Story Teller... A monster musician for many years... So glad he is back on track and selling out everywhere he goes...
"oh No" reminds me of the band "Squirrel Nut Zippers".
"Oh no" reminds me of the Squirrel Nut Zippers.
Indifferent
All that your review is EXCELLENT...you definitely missed a chance to highlight Aurora Nishevci's immense contribution to the general songwriting as a Major member...on account of her Studies as a Classical Pianist and a Degree in Composition. Here is the text found on NME's Site about Aurora. -- ''Aurora Nishevci is a London-based musician. She began her musical education studying Classical Piano, then went on to study Composition at Trinity Laban (BMus) and Guildhall school of Music and Drama (MComp) where she won the Tracy Chadwell Memorial Prize for contemporary song. She is now a member of The Last Dinner Party playing keyboard/synth, singing, producing, orchestrating, composing and songwriting.'' -- That you missed putting much emphasis on this, her role as a Major member, had to be corrected. So here am i making sure the detractors and bullies shut up and reconsider. This is a bona fide band. Not mere straw dogs hired to look like a miraculous band. Anyway...once you've seen 10 of their shows on stage on YT ...you can't possibly still be thinking this is all fake... or you're insane. You might not like the style...but you can't deny them their formidable worth as the SAVIOURS that they are to millions. One week ago....i had been despairing for the last 30 years that the fantastic music of my youth would ever come back... and save millions of REAL Music fans from boredom. Our wait is over. Mine at the very least. --- You also might want to check out Emily Roberts' Resumé on Wikipedia. Just as impressive as Aurora. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Roberts --- and...AND we haven't yet talked about Abigail who has been writing music ever since she was thirteen. NO. they are not a puppet band.
Hi Claude! I'm glad you enjoyed the review 🙂. Aurora's musical pedigree is certainly something I should have put some more emphasis on. I agree with you 100% about this band. They are definitely the real thing. I saw them in Denver several months ago and they blew me away; far and away one of my favorite shows of the year (and I saw quite a few!) To think that there are still people out there that doubt the credibility of this band blows my mind. I would've figured they would have shut all those people up by now. Oh well, they will eventually have to come around to the fact that this is one of the most exciting bands on the planet right now. Thanks again for watching and your great comment!
His first band, "Whiskeytown" from the early 90's, is stellar.
I always wonder what people who defend shitty behavior would say when it happens to their friends, family, sisters, kids, etc. Sadly in 2024 some people put decrying on cancel culture above friends and family. Or they just live such an insulated singular life they can't imagine ever being directly affected by violent or abusive people
Ryan Adams was great, unfortunately having personally known someone who was abused by the dude I can't back it. I understand the "separate the artist from the art" deal but when your friend is one of the people getting fucked with, the dude stops being an artist and starts being any other abusive aggro narcissistic shithead. No different than some dickhead sitting at the local dive bar that I won't give the time of day to after hurting a friend of mine. Not gonna tell people not to listen to him and that he's not talented, but if someone treats your people like shit and you side with the shithead (especially celebrity shithead) after the fact you're a bad friend, a bootlicker and probably just have a hard on for defending bad behavior
Thanks for the thoughtful comment, Two Pounds! I completely respect your perspective on this. Many examples over history where fame has turned people into assholes and Ryan seems to have not been immune.
Thank you for this video!
Thank YOU for making this. Adam is such a talent. Love how you threw Jacko in there as people always put him on a pedestal!
Thanks, Frank!!
Right On Brother Wasted Talent!
Leave it to the vicious warmongering New York Times to denigrate anyone...
I'm a 53 year old man and dislike most music these days. But these girls really surprised me. This is really great stuff. The only album I made the effort to listen to this year.
Best debut of the year so far alongside English teacher. Also Best besides the new cure album.
They're a lot better than Wet Leg.
Super songs, from a super creep, so his lyrics are meaningless. I was a super fan, had everything he did, but got rid of ot all. Ask Todd Wisenbaker what he thinks.
Saw him play in AZ at a casino. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Been a fan since back in his Whiskeytown days.
Great video. Love to see some sanity. F cancel culture. Ryan is a force. Pretty good chance he's not innocent. But none of us are 100% thanks for the video. 👍🏼
Thanks, Eric! Really appreciate the comment 🙂
Dude is super talented...But this has happened to countless people for years
Great review, really like this album
Thanks Max!
I fell asleep watching this and you stayed in my dream telling me that Kurt Cobain sung a few lines in the style of John Lennon and that he also added sme guitar licks. Then I woke up to you giving your thoughts on the album and was like "what the fck just happened." lol.
Hahaha... thanks for the laugh!! Best comment I've read in some time. I just hope that the dream wasn't a nightmare 🙂
He had a career and fucked it by being a horrible git. He may have done the work and gotten sober, but the damage is out there for the people he hurt. He can still make a living by touring to people more willing to forgive those actions - he will never see another penny from me, and I'm sure he'll do alright regardless.
Should have read 'Who probably have plenty of skeletons'.....
Pity he is such a dick.
I’ve been a hardcore Ryan Adams fan since 1997 and Whiskeytown days. I’ve seen him live a dozen times over the years. That being said I’ve found his albums post-cancellation are wretched. I loved most every album he released from Faithless Street through Prisoner. But I liked nothing he’s released post-Prisoner. And I can promise you this opinion had nothing to do with the accusations.
just for talking of Ryan Adams you deserve a big round of applause
The left eats everyone and its own. They aren’t liberals.
Thank you on behalf of his true fans. Been a big fan of Ryan since mid 00s. Ryan is eccentric, manic at times, an ex drug addict, and highly emotional as seen through his songs. He’s also prolific and hyper talented at song writing. Also a versatile musician and knows how to use his tools in his toolbelt well. I think what happened to him was over the top and really loved your use of the phrase “obliterate” bc that’s what the media and his band members did to him. I felt so bad. Long live his songs and I’m so glad he’s still alive and selling out theatres. He’s a true gift to modern music.
Hey Purple! Thanks for watching and the well-spoken comments about Ryan. "Hyper talented" is a great descriptor.
I lost respect for the clown. He's got his head right up his behind along with his massive ego.
I knew Ryan a little when I worked for his management. He was, in my opinion, his own worst enemy. Crazy and creative are sourced from the same place.
Thanks Musilat! There seems to be a common thread of self-sabotage with Ryan. Your last statement is spot on.
you can just say it, he’s pompous
I had few attemps but unfortunatelly I don't like it :/ I expected it to be more psychodelic and experimental, as previous records. For me it's kinda boring... Of coure there are some nice tunes like Nothing to Declare but nothing that stands out in particular. I hope their next record will be more in their previous style, well we will see in about 5 years or something (considering how much time they usually make us wait for the next releases lol)
Hey Rocker! It's definitely a departure from the early stuff. I doubt that they will go backwards from here though with their next release. And you're right, don't hold your breath for a new album anytime soon, they're certainly not what you would call prolific! Thanks for watching and the comments!
Thank you. I’ve been saying this for years
ROMEO & JULIET. SO GOOD.
Hey I’m a young musician my band is called Lynx Load our song just got 6000 streams on Spotify and we’ve got 2000 monthly listeners our new song is out it’s called back to you would love if you listened and maybe even reviewed
Every track is musical magic. It’s the rock album of the year!
Thank you for this. Ryan is currently touring the UK and Europe to huge acclaim. Saw his solo acoustic tour last year (2023) and just recently (2024). Both memorable and magical performances. He is a truly gifted musician and songwriter. I agree that Star Sign (of the most recent releases) is an outstanding album. And his output continues. Apropos this video, and your intelligent analysis of the mainstream music press, please take a moment to listen to a new song (September 2024) titled AMETHYST. It speaks volumes and nothing I can say here could adequately convey its brilliance. And don’t miss the opportunity to see this artist live.
SUCH a great album. I’m 100% in agreement with your review and rating. I might go even higher than 9.5
Hi Kato! Thanks for watching! It's a ripper of an album for sure and one of my absolute favorites this year. I think this is an album that will grow in stature as time goes by. It really has a timeless quality to it.
We all know the stories...from Albert Hammond Jr.'s first H experience with him to - ongoing stories over the years. Cant remember that he proclaimed that he's a saint (I mean who is?)...but after 27 years active...wouldnt you think that if he is some kind of domestic monster/ violent partner/ or lover that we havent heard anything of it through the grapewine over the years? Honestly, I dont know him, and in such cases the coin always got two sides of the story...so I dont want to judge over nobody and taken part for his side...but for my impression...it went all a bit to far. It became to easy to destroy somebodies life or reputation with this cancel culture bullshit; about the "we know everything and whats right or wrong" generation who's got any idea about shit while their mommy's still have to call the dentist for a date, not able to get their asses cleaned up by themselves. So whats it all about...he had - obviously - sex with a younger musician under 21 (oh, america 🙄)... who he had written "I want to see your ID" I would say: she mocked HIM...the other way around...anyhow. Let me take the cudgels for every musician out there with a drug abusive behaviour who is still productive, writes, plays live and loves to entertain people...as somone who also got a serious drug problem through out the whole 00's and 10's...I can only guess that the desire to get together with someone, create a lovingly connection and try to move on sober...is soo fucking hard...do we have bad days and treat other people like shit? Constantly...because behaving like an egoist provided the posibility to stay clean and to dont get back onto that cycling treadmill...I'm sure it was really hard at a LOT of days to stay with him in contact/ or in an relationship...and probably still is. But thats all no reason to destroy someones life - cause believe it or not - at the end of the day it's his private life and who we are to judge someone without knowing him personal? Ps: I would have sued the new york times so they have to release a clarification page after just releasing unproved accusations which were just BS. PPS: and yeah, you are totally right - I havent heard anything from the last albums (not a single word) since the album with the train station on its cover. But I will check it out - right NOW. Therefore, thank you very much for your cool video. I totally agree with your statement.
Thanks for the comments and watching, Christopher! Appreciate the kind words :-)
saw him last night in York he was still amazing.
I love Ryan. The number of great songs he has written is so under-reported! Seen him 4 times in person. It's hit or miss depending on if he is "on his meds" or not. But still a songwriting genius.
Ryan Adams is incredible. An endless supply of beautiful songs full of emotion.
This is all truth! I remember seeing several female recording artists on Twitter really dissing on Ryan when he released Wednesdays in 2020, as well as one popular music critic from All Music. Without revealing any names, the review is there and no doubt he had his mind made up before he even heard it. I wouldn't doubt it if he still hasn't.
