Jacks Plumbing Videos

I upload plumbing videos talking about repairing common and unusual plumbing issues, hard to find parts, vintage plastic pipe fittings from the 1960s-1980s, when parts are made, etc. My plumbing advice is up to code, if it is not I will let you know in the video. I will not be held responsible for any damages that occur after following my advice.
How to fix a nub that broke off a Genova PVC fitting.
A lot of PVC drainage systems from the 1970s and 1980s used Genova twist lok plugs, these plugs would lock on to nubs but they would sometimes break off, this video will show you how to fix them.

Saved me a lot time. Thanks!!!!!
I have never seen cleanout plugs like that, they don't look very secure and I see why they got discontinued.
I think is was loose because the rubber was dried and shrunk the gasket, I used to use those plugs a few years ago when they still made them and I always thought the two inch gaskets where too big. They still make the plugs in SCH 30 but all the twist lock fittings and SCH 40 plugs got discontinued, I kind of liked those plugs but they are definitely more old school.
I have a question for you l have some abs fittings that has lines on them and they're not seams or cracks but its on the inside of the fitting too. What causes this?
@@briancrandall1601 it could be excess plastic or where two parts of a mold came together.
Thanks man! I really appreciate how simple and straightforward your explanation was
Good idea. I have a bunch of them Genova pvc fittings. Restore shrunk the inventory and different plumbing materials to their plumbing section in January and it s not the same store it used to be.
@@briancrandall1601 my local restore does not have as much as it used to either but other nearby ones still have a lot, I am starting to slow down on collecting plastic pipe fittings so I will only get them if they are cheap.
@@jacksplumbingvideos7147same Im running out of room too but I refuse to pay high prices at the big box stores for poor quality PVC fittings with tons of flash on them when I can get older better quality PVC fittings at restore for less money too.
@@jacksplumbingvideos7147 l wish you lived closer we could trade PVC parts. It's cool to find someone with the same interest and hobbies as you.
I’ve gone to a few restores in my area and yes they‘ve cut plumbing inventory which sucks! Went to a Restore in Billings Montana in 2014 they had a bunch of ABS fittings following not no more.
@@matthewlassise7607 I have hit the jackpot a couple of times and got new 3" and 2" brass dwv fittings too.
see through p-trap, clever! good info
A lot of twisting
I know this is for demonstration purposes only, but depending on your local codes, I think that trap arm has to be a minimum of 12” from the drain stack. It is important to mention, if cut any sorter, you can turn that p-trap into an s-trap, sucking the water in the p-trap out and preventing it from doing its job.
@@terrenceludwig5248 the requirement is that the trap arm is twice as long as the size of pipe, so a 1 1/2 trap would require a 3 inch trap arm and a 2 inch trap would require a 4 inch trap arm. A 12 inch trap arm for 1 1/2 pipe would be impossible in most cases so I have no idea where that came from, it would only make sense if it was a six inch trap.
@@jacksplumbingvideos7147You are correct, my mistake. I just knew there was minimum and it looked close to me. But with what you said, that distance in the video is correct.
For smaller diameter pipe you can also get compression fittings which allow you to use any type of plastic including polypropylene which is best for if you have outdoors sections of pipe. At least where I live you can them.
P traps aren't supposed to be glued
There are many different traps you can use, I just grabbed whatever I had at the time. I have probably made five or so different forms of this video and I probably used a different trap in each one.
In Europe that grey pipe is simply plumbed in and never seen
Very good job very nice work! Love the 1/2” brass street 45s. Keep up the good work with the great plumbing videos Jack really enjoy them 🙂
My swimming pool has a 1 1/2 return line and I bought an aerator that is for a 2" return. Is there a fitting I can use to connect the aerator to the return on the wall of the pool.

Thanks. I will know what to ask for now.
Thanks.
Great and short video, straight to the point and explanation.
I was watching the video with the vintage 1970s gsr pvc fittings tomorrow potentially buying 2x1-1/2x1-1/2 gsr pvc wye and a 3 inch gsr PVC double wye . Love the vintage pvc fittings from the 70s and 80s a lot better pvc dwv fittings were tons better then.
Nice video, I see way too many people just put the nut on the galvanized pipe.
I definitely don’t like doing that but there have been times when I did not have this adapter and had to think of something quick.
I have seen recently that a lot of ball valves do not have the packing nut, I guess those are not repairable.
I have made them out of a pvc trap adapter and a street female adapter but it s not the best way to do it when connecting to metal male threads.
Be careful when screwing plastic onto metal threads, I usually use a Durham fitting and screw pvc into that.
@@jacksplumbingvideos7147 yeah I'm lucky I have not split a female adaptor yet.
U were a life saver this morning, thank you. I knew i could do this. 😊
Is this less likely to Leak? I have a connection the other way, with the female piece being female, and I have small dip. Will making the connection this way provide a matter seat between the metal to plastic?
The female adapter can crack and leak, in some places it is even illegal to use a plastic female on metal pipe.
Stupid
Actually having your washer drain into a 2ft tall pipe is building code. That's how it's ment to be even if you also use a washing machine funnel at the top
I never knew this was possible 😊
Just wanted to say thanks! And want to know why don't you like the red onesM
They don’t have as good of a grip, all of these plugs are really only to be used temporarily anyway.
@jacksplumbingvideos7147 I sadly have a drainage that has a test plug. What can I use to make a permanent plug? What's yours discord! Would love to show ya. Just need advise before I DIY

I'm not sure on the 90⁰ 2" and 3" elbows to use long radius or not. If I have a 2" horizontal transitioning up, or vertical, to be a drain for vanity or kitchen sink, is regular 90⁰ okay, or needs to be long sweep?
Preferably a long sweep which would probably be required if the vertical pipe dumps into a horizontal pipe.
@@jacksplumbingvideos7147 Personally, I believe both will work, but I want to pass inspection. I have a regular one installed now, but someone said that needed to be long sweep. So I'm just doing some research on what is required over being preferred.
Is that a T or a Wye that is the intersection of the AAV / waste line and the P trap ?
Tee, never use a wye oriented like that as it can vacuum out the trap.
I actually figured this out and did it today on a new install before seeing your video or anyone else showing this solution. I'm a little concerned that the dishwasher diverter partially blocks the drain line for the second sink. I hope it works in the long run. An alternative would be to use a plain T but then you'd need a piece for the dishwasher drain hose that fits on the end of the tee and I'm not sure that exists.
Love your videos! Straight to the point! You seem very knowledgeable and interested in plumbing codes and history. I shop Menards all the time, are you also in the Midwest? I hope you have a great boss that sees your potential. Keep doing what you're doing!
Do not use caulk, use silicone. It’s flexible and comes off easily. Waterproof and dry in 30 minutes.
Isn't he talking about silicone caulk?
We did this frequently in ND for apartment with an island kitchen. In MN we did loop vents. If MN allowed it we would probably only do combination waste and vents.
I think the inner diameter is 1 and 3/4 inch and not 2.
That is not how two inch fittings are measured, the tab on my measuring tape is probably what made the measurement wrong.
@@jacksplumbingvideos7147 thank you for the info. I don't know Jack about this stuff.
Great video, you got some plumbing skills, thanks for the content I was wondering this very thing. What is the torch you are using there?
I think it was the basic torch kit made by Bernzomatic but I had problems with it randomly turning off, I would get a higher quality torch as bernzomatic has many options.
Hey- GREAT videos. You do an excellent job of breaking things down, now subscribed to your channel. I saw you had a video on "closet bends" - but comments were turned off, so I came here. You did a good job of describing them - I was just curious, what is the benefit of a closet bend vs a regular long sweep 90 4x3? Is the advantage of a closet bend just so it can fit in smaller spaces? Is there any "drainage advantage" to it over a long sweep 90? I'm putting in a toilet and I realize probably both work, but also fascinated by the "why." If I have all the space in the world, wouldn't a long sweep 90 be better since there is a more gradual bend? Thanks again - great channel!
I like the 4x3 closet bends because you have more flexibility for flanges you can use, you can glue a 4 inch flange on the 4 inch pipe to start and then you can easily cut it off and glue a three inch flange on the inside of the 4 inch if it breaks.
Saved my day!
Nicely demonstrated
My saddle valve is leaking when I try to shut it down… sucks.
Do these apply for storm drain too? I have seen many storm drains with vertical combinations, and I have tell the plumbers but they said it doesn’t apply to storm drains.
It does not.
Nice work Jack. I would have added a clean out tee on the washer vent under the wye for future service.
Very nice work! However, I'm just wondering why you used compression fittings if your faucet already has unions? I would have just screwed a male adapter into the faucet and used two solder 45 elbows and a solder coupling.
The compression fittings made it easy to assemble the faucet setup before shutting the water off, all I needed to do was quick shut off the water and cut the pipes to put my setup in with the compression nuts. I thought about soldering but I realized I would not have as much adjustment in this tight area, for larger jobs I would definitely solder as it is easier to just solder all of the joints in those cases.
@@jacksplumbingvideos7147 Makes sense. I was kinda surprised you used the 45 degree street elbows, they are pretty rare as far as fittings go.
Thank you for recording and posting this valuable educational video.
Thanks. Helpful video.
How much psi can this hold I need this for an air tank
Plastic pipe is never advised to be used for air because if it breaks shrapnel will go everywhere unlike metal pipe which will split.
I used a sanity y when I tied my washer drain into my laundry sinks drain. Thinking about the flow now a 90 would've made way more sense, but I haven't had any issues in the last two years
Can the galvanize be replaced with PVC.
Residential and commercial settings allow different things, in residential settings you can but in commercial settings it depends on what code allows. No matter where you are I don’t recommend you sandwich small sections of plastic between existing galvanized, in that case I would use new galvanized or cast iron when going between existing galvanized pipe.
Our house doesn’t even have a utility sink for the laundry room. We literally *have* to use the standpipe. Unfortunately, being both cast iron and very close to 50 years old, it’s very near the rated end of life (and we have had problems in the past). Even more unfortunately, the underground drain lines are also near-EOL cast iron (and the trap for the washer is underground), so replacement would require redoing some of the foundation. Another problem with permanently attaching the drain hose is that those come with the washing machine. You’re going to need to do some deinstallation, either on that end or the other end (on both your new and old machine) when it inevitably dies.
The house I bought on auction only has a stand pipe. To be honest I didn't even notice this or think about it after I took a quick look at things before the auction began. I am getting a plumber to check things out and I'd like to put a sink in the basement not only for the washer but because I want to paint the floor and walls and clean up the basement beforehand.
Double wye can be used upright, I believe. Just not if you need venting. Am I wrong?
If it is to connect a vertical vent to a horizontal trap arm then you can’t use it, if it is just to connect drains that have already been vented then you are fine.
The P trap direction is backwards no?
No, I installed it the way the manufactured nut fits.
@@jacksplumbingvideos7147 Oh ok, Also is that coupler coming out of the tub 1 1/2" to 2"? is that the best way to go? Thanks!
@@thorsal2758 that or a pvc coupling, the size depends on what trap and overflow assembly you use.
@@thorsal2758current codes ask for 2" drain off tub. 1-1/2" still ok for labs. No matter what anyone tells ya, always use 2" for washer drain ! Modern washer pumps often have pumps that move water volumes too fast for 1-1/2" to handle 😉
How can I remove a fitting from ABS that is 10 years old
If you can cut it off then just do that but you can cut the fitting off of the hub and cut slits in the hub to chip it off.
