Similar bottle-style traps are very common in many European countries, nearly every house in Sweden has them. You can just unscrew the lower half of the trap and empty out any debris.
This trap does not meet code in my area since it is not properly vented. However, drum traps are allowed under special circumstances where it is necessary to "catch" debris in the drain rather than letting it flow out.

I agree with you. The gasket on the cup will wear out and it may be hard to find a replacement if its discontinued.

and it wont hold back the sewer gases making it not to code in California at least
It would still hold back sewer gas because of the down pipe being submerged in water but this still probably does not meet code for other reasons.
