    This book felt like it was written in Japanese by AI and translated into English using Google Translate. I'm astounded a book can be so bad, honestly. By page 8 I knew this was written by a man - I couldn't tell if the women in the book made such weird decisions because he's sexist and thinks women do things that don't make sense, or because he is a terrible writer. Perhaps both??? I would recommend The Lonely Castle in the Mirror since you were interested in the premise of this book - it's my favourite book and while it's slightly more YA it beautifully delivered what Before the Coffee Gets Cold failed to. Sweet Bean Paste is also a great short read and is more like what I hoped this book would be from looking at the cover. What a shame your first Japanese book happened to be one so bad!? 🤭

    A belated Happy Birthday! I get what you mean about The Girl on the Train. There was a spate of alcoholic unreliable narrator thrillers at about the same time, most of which were OK but I didn't love. From what you said, The Cruel Prince series doesn't sound like my kind of fantasy. Interesting to hear your thoughts about Crawdads. @@literatureliz91 certainly :) A great contemporary sci-fi mystery is Leviathan Wakes, which is the first book of the Expanse series. It's a detective noir murder mystery kinda story that takes place in the future (about 200-300 yrs). The series continues to have a mystery element in the next books but the genre of each book varies. From the classics, I'd say Asimov's Robot series is a nice spin on the detective stories. The short stories are more of a puzzle solving, but the novels are firmly in the mystery genre. And on the lighter side of mystery, I'd suggest the Murderbot series, it's amazing, funny, sarcastic with plenty of twists and turns. Another classic fun mystery is Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently's holistic detective agency (amazing, unparalleled British humour!)

The third book did feel a bit flat in general as if it was the last couple of chapters in a book that's been stretched out for too long (I also think the ending was a bit too happy/sweet) - I feel like if it has differed more from the two first books with Jude and Cardan truly finding each other and connecting (not just giving in to each other) the third book would have had an entirely different feel to it :)

    Congrats on over 250 subs! Have a good month reading all these. Babel is one I hope to get to. I really enjoyed Yellowface by the same author, but less so with The Poppy War. I hope Six of Crows works out well for you. I hadn't read any Grishaverse until that one and enjoyed it although there are lot of flashbacks that steal some of the momentum from the story, IMO. I also say 'reserve' when getting a book from the library. It's probably a British English thing. I use 'hold' on Libby, though, but that's an American app. About 70% of my reading is audiobooks. When I first started, I had to just sit and concentrate, like learning a new skill and it was always at 1x speed. 2x speed sounded weird. I've gradually increased speed over the years to 2x, which now sounds like normal, and listen while walking, cooking or any activity that doesn't require much thought. It would be good for gardening. Some narrators bring the story to life and make the experience better than just reading but, as you said, others can ruin a decent book. I hope you find some that work for you.

It's still unreal to me 🥹 I've heard so much mixed about Yellowface, but it tends to be a book you either love or hate it seems 🙈 Okay, I had to look up reserved/on hold and you're right! "Reserve" is the British English way of saying it - so... I'm going to switch back to saying reserved to stay consistent in my wanna-be British dialect 🙈 You're not the first to say listening to audiobooks is like learning a new skill. I'll try and perceive listening to audiobooks like that and see if it helps. And as soon as it's not raining like a monsoon anymore, I'll listen while gardening 🙌🏻

    My top5 of January (out of 23) -A Restless Truth by Freya Marske (still my best of the year, slow burn and very spicy) -The Witche's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec norse myth retelling from Loki's wife's perspective, non spicy romance and made me cry) -The Midnight Girls by Alicia Jasinska (great slow burn ya sapphic romantasy) -Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See (female friendship in 1800s China) -Dragonfall by L.R Lam ((mostly) clean romantasy)

    I also have a hard time with audiobooks but just when they are fiction, a non fiction is easy as audiobook for me.. This is a great TBR selection, I also want to read Babel. I’ll be looking forward to your review of it :)

    I‘m so happy for your channel’s growth! And I can’t wait to see your thoughts on the serpent and the wings of night, it was on of my last years favorites. Since I‘m from Germany fairytales by the brother Grimm are really popular and I grew up with their fairytales as bedtime stories (and not the Disney version) and now being an adult it amazes me that we consider them as stories for kids 😂

      Thank you so much! ☺ I'm really looking forward to reading The Serpent & The Wings of Night. Right now I'm trying to get through House of Flame and Shadow. That book should count for at least two! 😆 Haha, yeah. I sometimes think the same about the original H.C. Andersen fairytales. I've read so many fairytales by Brother Grimm and I am loving them - although I probably wouldn't be reading them to my child before she's rather old 🙈

    Lots of good books here! Six of Crows is also on my March TBR, can’t wait to read it! And I’m primarily an audiobook listener and I definitely think the narrator can make or break it! I really like Julia Whelan and Marin Ireland, they’ve narrated a lot of books. Maybe you could try reading and listening to the same book at the same time so you can get the visual but also practice listening? It’s definitely a learning curve at first! 😆

    • @literatureliz91
      @literatureliz91 6 месяцев назад

      I think so too! I'm really excited for this month's TBR ✨ That's actually a really good tip! I might try that. The narrator has all the power when it comes to audiobooks. Honestly, I just want Stephen Fry to narrate all audiobooks. And Ben Barnes 🙈

    • @LibrariesandLattes

      @@literatureliz91 haha so true! I wish more famous people with good voices would narrate audiobooks 😆 I really enjoyed Tom Lake, which was narrated by Meryl Streep! And you could always try a book that you’ve already read and loved as an audiobook, as another way to practice 😊

    Hi there Liz! Yes, some Japanese writers can take time as well… the Japanese are also especially known for their short stories. A good place to start with them if they are new to you would be the (1) Oxford and the (2) Penguin collections of Japanese Short Stories. With these volumes you get big Bang for your Buck, great variety… and you might find an author or two worth following. ~Spike 🥸
