For the past 4 years, Master Artist Daniel Sprick has become my mentor and dear friend. To be frank, Dan has changed my life entirely. During this short time, he has done everything in his power to set me on the a path to succeed. I am a part of a small group of extremely dedicated painters who are working in the studio every single day. When a problem arises in our works in progress, It is not...

Can you use Liquin with acrylic paint?
No, Liquin is just for oil based paints
Why the heck did they put child proof caps on these damn things? It's impossible to open the first go and keeps getting harder with each usage!!
@@leighfoulkes7297 I couldn't agree more. It's obnoxious. I try to make sure to wipe the cap clean every time I open it.
Tanner, thank you for this demo. It continues from the class you gave at the Broomfield Art Guild.
My pleasure! I'm so glad it helped!
That’s worse of fear and I am born with microcephaly and my grandmothers has cancer one of them died . My famous artist uncle told me to use this today for my rushed work and he had that brand but it has a green bottle one and I saw it on Amazon saying new . So what’s the difference between that you have and the green one 3:07
thank you!

Is it possible to work with liquin after a first layer of oil painting that is mixed with a solvent (odourless white spirit)?
@sophiezerdoun2517 As long as the first layer is adequately dry, you may use liquin in the next layer. If the first layer is thin, then the paint should dry faster. We want to avoid applying fast drying paint on top of slow drying paint. Otherwise, the painting will likely crack.
Hi Tanner I have done a Mixedmedia painting . The under layer is Acrylic. And I have painted an Owl in Oil with hardly any liquin and I completed it back in March this year. And the Owl is taking for ever to dry. What I would like to know is if I could use a small detail brush and carefully paint over the owl with Liquin? To help it dry. Could you please tell me if this is possible? And if not is there anything else I can do to speed up the drying process? As it is a Commission piece. And just one other thing . Would you use Gamvar to varnish the whole piece after it is completely dry? Or spray varnish that is suitable for both acrylic and oil? I would so appreciate your advice as I am new to oils. Thankyou in advance Cheers Jenny.
Zinc white is the best for mixtures because it's transparent, just should not be used thickly and especially on base layer (but I did do that around 20 years ago, maybe it's not enough to check for cracking, but would be curious to find that painting ~ I also applied it then as textured layer with my fingers:-) but it was a board, generally it's said to use it on a board not canvas and avoid re-streatching if it's on canvas). It is added to titanium white to make it stronger actually, pure titanium makes porous layer which is not strong enough. Lead white is the best because it's most strong and lasting. I'm about to try mixed paint of lead-zinc and also zirconium-zinc white. I don't like titanium for it's strong opacity, just use it in rare cases. For videos like this it's interesting to know all pigmnets in all paints, of course it's possible to just google, but better to find out on the spot. Was good to know about W&N Naples Yellow is a hue, I was just wondering about it after seeing it in other video. I have such mixed hues just for experiment. But soon will try real Naples Yellow:-) (which is toxic, so I prepare to be less messy)
Tanner, this sounds wonderful, especially Rome. Is everyone painting in oil? I am plugging along in watercolor these days, making bits of progress, so I'm not sure I could fit in.....
@marypaschall1260 Most of us will be using oil, but the process that will be demonstrated is akin to a watercolor technique. I am hosting preliminary lessons to prepare students going on the trip out of my studio. Let me know if you'd like to join us here on Thursdays 4-8 /Sundays 10-2. I think you'd fit right in.
@@tannersteedart I think Sundays could work for me. Let's talk.

That's a very delicate portrait. 👏
That is a very dope painting 🔥
@KristinaSayers-ij9ql thanks! I'm excited to move onto the background.. still brainstorming
Thanks for the video. My painting took months to dry. I intended to glaze with liquin fine detail verion of liquin and light gel. Used artesian water based Windsor Newton. Am I correct in assuming is ok to use? Portraits lots of time, so don't want any problems.
Liquin is for standard oil paints, not Water mixable, so I am not sure if there was an issue because of that.
I would not mix Water based oils with Liquin.
Give me a good oil painting palette with the ochers and umbers and related paints for really muted landscape and seascape paintings
They’re literally called blending stumps. I use them for blending all the time. Use a light touch. Also the pencil sharpener is for two different sharpnesses. They’re not a one ,two step.
Jerrys has good prices. But I'll never order from them again unless its through a person! I paid good money expecting series 1 micheal hardings, & recieved 2,3,4, 5 instead. Once a computer order is in, theres no stopping it before it goes to warehouse. & yes the computer puts in the wrong data, so read order details Really good before you purchase! Especially if you need the paint for a deadline. By time the wrong thing is sent back, & all paperwork is corrected, you'll never get what you need to meet the date. Good prices, too automated! Blick has always been solid, good products. For the extra couple dollars, you get exactly what you order.
Wow. This is so valuable, we're lucky to have advice given in such great detail by a skilled painter like you. I also feel like your work keeps getting better each year. Thank you Tanner!
@@pureconfuzion thank you so much! I'm happy to help in whatever way I can!
Does wearing a face mask helps “avoid” the product toxicity?
I'm not sure if this would help as much as a studio with good ventilation
To those who have tried both, how is Liquin vs walnut Alkyd oil?
Do we use liquin if it thickens
You can still use it. I often dilute it with gamsol and a little stand oil.
There are lots of things to say here. As far as whites go not all whites are equal. Smithsonian researchers were not able to conclusively determine the cause of paint cracking and zinc white was the ultimate cause. Other pigments have been found to also crack and some very commonly used ones. So I wouldn't be in a hurry to discount zinc white. I would discourage it as a single pigment white, using strait out of the tube, but mixing with other pigments can make it more flexible. Interesting, you are ok with cadmiums but not lead or flake white. Flake white is a beautiful color especially in portraits. It does things that Titanium or Zinc white cannot do. The substitutes are nonsense. No one should kid their selves that any of the "hue" or replacement colors are just as good as the original. They are not. Guess what it is, Titanium white and zinc white which doesn't come close to flake white. You will like that Naples yellow in flesh tones it works very well with venetian red. Its a color always on my pallet.
Thank you!
My pleasure!
can you link your sharpener?

This is just an idea, not tried it. Use a pallet with a lid, put the whole thing in a vacuum storage bag for clothes, it has a valve; then suck the air out with a hand pump or hoover on suck.
Ah shit, I'm new to oil painting and have just been putting my Gamsol in an old glass, letting the vapours flow all over the place. Guess I gotta be more careful.
Maybe you can put a little saucer on top of it? That's better than nothing.
What about using a spray primer or paint primer combo?
So if I use 20% liquin with paint on my 1st layer, how do I make a fatter 2nd layer please?
@JanetCarpenter-tb5ou I'd recommend using the same quantity in the second layer. The fat over lean rule is a rule to ensure that the paint underneath dries at a faster rate than the subsequent layers. Therefore, as long as you are consistent with the quantity of liquin in your mixtures, the only thing you need to consider is how thick you are painting. If the paint is really thick, it will take longer to dry. So generally, aim for thick over thin.
Great video Tanner, thank you. The only thing I would add is this... I typically cut my boards to size first, this way I can prime the sides as well.
Very informative.. especially the fat over lean process.. Great stuff.. thanks
Thank you for the info. Do we still have to wait for 6 Months to varnish a painting which has liquin as its medium. Since you said liquin dries the painting faster, so do we still need to wait that long?
Great question. I would still wait as long as you can. But I would be comfortable using gamvar after a couple of months (IF) the painting is painted relatively thinly. Any thick impasto will still take a long time to oxidize even when using liquin.
These days, when I paint, it's more with watercolors. However, years ago when I was more into Oil Painting, once I was doing an exercise from a book and it recommended and earth tone palette: Yellow Ochre (Yellow) , Burnt Sienna (Red) , Ivory Black (Blue) + (Titanium White). I was impressed at the variety of hues that could be obtained and the ease of mixing colors. However, I thought that the Ivory Black was a bit lifeless, so I swapped out Ivory Black for Ultramarine Blue. I must have used this modified earth tone palette (Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue + White) for dozens of paintings. There are many benefits to using this combination: 1) It is easy to mix colors with such a limited palette, 2) they are almost always Series I colors, so they're inexpensive, and 3) they're all very lightfast. If you buy the 200ml tubes during back-to-school, winter, spring and summer sales, you can almost always get a great deal. Also 4) Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna are great for making a wide variety of warm and cool greys.
Can you remove a coat of 50/50 Gamsol and Galkyd painting medium...I forgot it had to be wiped off with a soft cloth. I know I put too much onto my dry oil painting. However, I still have dry chalky spots, and I've disturbed some of the paint (I see brush strokes from the brush when applying the mixture. What is the best thing to do at this point?
Once the medium has dried, I would not attempt to remove a layer of paint. Unless you plan to repaint an area. Often I will scrape or sand areas (using a mask outdoors) to remove or reduce texture before continuing to paint.
This is gold. What a treasure to learn from such a master. Thank you for sharing!
@@mikemalm2416 our pleasure!
are the van gogh paints decent?
@jarodiking2559 those are fine when you are just getting started with oils. But as you run out of your colors, I would begin to replace them with Winsor And Newton
Ive used Liquin for a long time, but I never knew about the black oily paint and liquin, so you can always learn something new. I just subscribed Thanks
Thank you! I’ve been trying to paint in my backyard lately and was struggling a lot with the changing lightings and the color mixing. I tend to work digitally so traditional painting is so very interesting, thank you for the tips!
Excellent work!
Thank you, You are amazing
Stunning ❤
I'm a portrait artist and I use Winsor and Newton titanium white, yellow ochre, permenant rose, burnt sienna, brown madder and ultramarine violet for my skin tones. W&N smalt, vandyke brown and naples yellow are also staples for hair color variations
Thank you so much, Tanner and Daniel. So generous of you to share this brilliant content.
Our pleasure!
Williamsburg white is also my favorite. Bout the cadmium’s and cobalts - don’t worry too much, the heavy metals hardly get absorbed through the skin, just don’t lick your fingers 😉
A cool video could be to demonstate mixing some of the colours you make often
Great idea! It may be a while until I can make this. In the meantime, let me know if you'd be interested in joining my online lessons. Fridays 9-12 mtn std time
Such a treasure, this! Thank you so much from the other side of the world. I hope to one day meet you people:)
Thank you very much for this review! Can you provide a link/ product name for the Mat board cutter you use to cut the panels?
So can oiling out be a synonym for varnishing? I thought you were essentially varnishing this so as to make it all a similar texture/shine without blotches. Would love to know. Also would you say that to strip down the medium situation that I could just go with liquin original and gambsol and call it good...like for everything, washing brushes, varnishing, thinning/mixing paints and oiling out? I'm just trying to simplify with a priority of fast drying. Thanks!
Sunflower oil works just great too and is cheap
