My dad absolutely schooled me on a black jitterbug in the 80s. I was working a big bass off the tip of a fallen log. Kept missing it. My dad tried and after a couple twitches, got hit on a long pause. It was so epic. It was the biggest bass I’d seen at the time. I was probably 12 or 13 years old.

The Heddon Crazy Crawler is deadly on creeks and rivers at night for smallmouth bass. I grew up fishing them here in northwest Pennsylvania. Also caught my first Muskie on one after dark in a River here. Great under estimated lure.

I made 4 knock off of True Temper lure in freshman high school metal class, couldn't afford to buy them. They were a 7/16 wide x 4 inch long bow tie folded into a U, a treble hook mounted after the bend. The 3/32" inside U gap was to vibrate cranking the bate home. I think T T painted the chrome red on one side, I used brass for 2 and aluminum for the other 2. After polishing and lacquered I finished one side with red paint. Never used them, was always afraid of snagging them. 15:43

I fish it 8-12” in front of the main lure, always use heavier line for the leader (20lb Mono). I drew out with the guy that invented it at a BASS Invitational. I’ve caught more doubles on that rig than a A Rig! Another plus is some walking baits, particularly the Sammy like to hook the front hook and that thing stops that. Someone just reintroduced a similar bait. You better give that thing another try, you’ll never fish a walking bait without one again!

Before the suspending jerk baits came along I would weight a Thunder Stick to make it suspend. Pre spawn around my house Southern NY it was like they were giving away money every weekend at my local lakes. I love that lure! The world found out when Clunn won the 1994 TN Invitational on Kentucky Lake with a weighted Jerk Bait.

Not only bass, pike will kill a thunder stick. Years ago I picked up a couple for bass but the pike killed it. Caught a few bass too👍 I fished a Rapala original floating large size for pike since I was 10 in the late sixties, the thunderstick out fished it two to one.

When I was a kid in the 1960s there was a popular lure called a bucks sputnik. I think it must have been a different person named buck. It was a knock off version of the old Heddon sonic. They were 90 cents each and they worked really well. I still have one. Must have been a local man named buck in Alabama where I was at the time. Love your videos!😊

Enjoy your videos! I think heddon refered to a lot of their color patterns as shore minnow back in the day. I never used a heddon torpedo. I got stuck on a lure called a dalton special and the smithwick devils horse. I also enjoy using the zara spook. Walking the dog is just fun. If you ever want to make your own wooden lures top water is a good place to start. I could carve a torpedo and buy the prop from Janns Netcraft for about $1. My favorite topwater today aside from a buzzbait which i also make for myself is my rendition of a dalton special. Fun times!

A popular sportfish as well as great eating. My guess is they turned up in Australia in late 80s. I remember as a kid, probably 7-13 years old, I would find those top water lures everywhere I went fishing. Hung in trees Hung in lily pads Hung on stumps Hung on docks Any where it could get hung up…I found them. I never ever had to buy one. I’d untangle them tie them on my Pic&Save or Kmart, Combo Special, which was usually a Shakespeare rod and reel or a Zebco rod and reel…. I would wear that rod and reel out, throwing that top water “popper”… I can remember….I never caught a thing on those lures. I ain’t sure if it was my youthful exuberance, trying to imitate one of the great Bass Masters of that time, or the bass weren’t interested in it and it was just a lure made to attract a fisherman’s money. But, the store sure got my money for a very inexpensive combo rod and reel….

Just pull up between the tops of submerged mesquite trees, cast the Mister Twister in any direction, and hang on. LOL. The 3 of us camped on the road leading down behind the dam... 99% of the Hybrid Striped Bass I've ever caught were caught on a red jig head (usually H&H 1/4 oz.) and a white Sassy Shad. 40 years ago, most of the Crappie I caught were on 1/16 or 1/32 oz. jigs with white 2" Mister Twister Teenie Tail Grubs. I even caught many bass on the 6" Pocket Phenom worms. This was all in the early to mid 1980's. ...Remembering my success with the white Mister Twister "Grubs", I bought a pack of the white 2" Teenie Tails about 3 years ago. What a huge disappointment. I still have some of my older ones and they are much tougher! The new ones are mush! They last about 1 or 2 fish, usually Crappie, if the Bluegill don't tear them up first. My old ones last 1 - 3 trips! I still catch panfish on what's left of my 35-40 year old white or red and white 2" Teenie's. I even used to use those on 1/8 oz. red Eagle Claw jig heads back in the waterway canals of LA fishing for Speckled Trout and Redfish on ultra lite tackle. You talk about fun.. and successful! Thank you again for bringing back the memories!
