The problem with Category B - Zwift
Просмотров 14 тыс.7 месяцев назад
Zwift Racing lives and dies by its categorisation. If a rider is too strong for a category it is unfair, but if a category is too strong for a rider to compete then it is a poor experience for the rider. The leap from Category B to Category A is a jarring experience. It takes most riders to a place where it is impossible to compete. Because of this, many savvy riders sandbag or exploit the loop...

What would I do differently? - Peaks Challenge 2024

What would I do differently? - Peaks Challenge 2024
The key to peaks is don't use valet bags, skip the lunch stop and eat really fast at the smaller stops that are quicker to roll in and out, and save your legs for the back of falls Creek no matter how good you feel early on.
This is really good advice. Especially if you are going for faster times. Harrietville, Diner Plain, and Omeo are all very time consuming stops.
I di it in 12.30 with 2 flats on the 1st descent - it was brutal through Omeo in the 40+ heat - Back again next this year
2 flats in the descent. I hope you are packing tubeless this year.
See you at Peaks!!!
Awesome dude. What are you targeting?
@@ModerateCyclist Sub10 is the goal... But Alpine conditions are unpredictable, so finishing is first priority.
Just focus on minimising stops. That is the biggest killer.
Do something different? Race CX? Work your way up to Paris-Brest-Paris?
PBP is 2027..
I wouldn't even know where to start with CX, but that could be fun. PBP looks insane. I am really keen to try something extended over a multiple days.
Wow you smashed it. Can you coach me?
Thanks dude. Haha, not sure I would pass the coaching test after this one. Need a bit more experience under my belt.
See you at peaks 2025 !!! Sub 9 hrs let’s get a group happening
Yeah boy! Going to need a rocket crew.
@ we can do it bro just get a good group and everyone working together …. And remember 3grams of carbs per kilo of body weight per hour !!!
@ I just did the whole loop on my own yesterday, in 10:30 …… we get a solid group we can do it !!!
3x78 = 234g / h. That is a lot. I am going to be targeting like 100g.
It can definitely be done. Good effort doing the recon. I wish I could do the loop on a Tuesday 😜.
Good luck in 2025!
Thank you! Exciting times ahead.
I recommend thr Seven gravel race in nannup WA in May
Is this the one that Chris Miller bombed out of this year?
Good work in 2024, I enjoy watching your videos whilst Zwifting. Good luck in 2025 and at the Peaks challenge. I hope to be able to ride the peaks challenge in 2026.
Thanks dude. Happy to provide some trainer fodder. I know a lot of people targeting 2026.
41 you say? How do you keep the grays away 😂from
This is my favourite comment of 2025 😜. Just good genetics I guess. Thanks for watching dude.
4w/kg is already very good and means you'd be at the front on any club ride.
There is always room for improvement. Until there is not 😜. That’s what moderate is all about.
Will give Peaks another crack this year. Training hard for a finish.
This is your year Davo. Fingers crossed for moderate weather!
50 and less than moderate but live your content young fella
Thanks mate! Never upset being called young 😜. As long as you are getting after it, that’s the important part!
@ always after it. Off to TDU in a few days! Highly recommend if you never have. McCarrs is my local so will see ya round the place 👍🏻👍🏻
Jealous! It’s definitely on my list. MCR best local around IMO 😂
My suggestion for 2025 is more gravel biking. I enjoy your channel because you come across as someone who sincerely wants to improve and is making an effort to make that happen.
Definitely some more gravel adventures. But got to get the big grind done at the start of the year first. Thanks mate, much appreciated as always. I hope you saw my shoutout in the comments section.
@@ModerateCyclist I did, thanks. The recognition was appreciated.
Great to see you returning to ride our beautiful mountains in Victoria. Every year I swear never again, but every year I find myself signing up again. Good luck, you’ll smash it (again).
If you are local and able, then I say why not! Good luck to you too mate. What’s your goal this time?
@@ModerateCyclist Depends on conditions. If it is hot like last time then the goal is not to end up in an ambulance like someone I know. Otherwise just see how close I can get to ten hours.
Hahaha great intro. You smashed the riding in 2024 mate!
Thanks JK! Look forward to seeing you out there in 2025.
@@ModerateCyclist See you at Peaks ;)
@ yeah boy, your 300 was gnarly
Well done! The hard work paid off. See you at the Peaks 🙂
Thanks Steve! It's getting close now.
yeah typical of your first ever race. race day is all about doing only what you have to. do i NEED to pull? no? then im getting the fuck off the front. idc how mad everyone else gets. next race dont do any of the work and make everyone else close down moves.
This is my plan. Let’s see how it works out.
When you see how hard this already is, and then remember Pogi doing an 80km breakaway is unbelieveable. And then there is me, trying to get to 150W FTP until Spring 😅
Pros are from another planet.
love it you tried racing in rl. Still a lot to learn but very impressed for a first race!!
Thanks dude. Glad I did it. Door is open now.
No suggestions, just a handful of kudos for your first race! You were on the low end of the learning curve, and this race moved you way up, so you'll be much better prepared, and if not a better outcome in terms of placing, a better outcome for tactics and burning matches at the right time in your next race. I enjoyed your insights comparing Strava to the real thing. I don't use an indoor trainer (lots of my buddies do), and your experience reassures me that my lack of Strava is not a major handicap (as long as I can get good miles outdoors). Nice video. Valuable for a cyclist like me. Again, kudos! And keep on!
Thanks mate. Definitely a great lesson on this day. Indoor is very convenient and can be very focused for structured training. If you can get the volume outside then you don’t need an indoor trainer. Although it’s raining here today, so I am fairly thankful.
What do you think of your Factor?
Hey Matt, I really like it, but I don't have a lot of comparison points. Most will need the 0 offset seatpost, new cockpit is a big upgrade. Notably aero, but also great for climbing.
@ why do you think most will need the zero offset Seatpost out of interest?
@Matt.dodgson it’s just the geometry. Almost everyone I meet with an Ostro has the same experience. The 25mm puts you too far back over the BB. Especially when most won’t order less than 100mm stem. If you are buying one, obviously do the measurements and take the recommendations from Factor, but keep this in the back of your mind.
@ thanks for the advice 👌
Glad to know your Garmin was okay. What's your current mounting solution for the 1050 with your Factor?
I just ordered a mount from Framesandgear. I will make a quick video once I get it
@@ModerateCyclist $$$$ currently, I have the mount one bolt forward (mount on only one bolt) so far so good but I can see running into similar issue as you.
That feels risky to me. It would suck ripping that bolt out. I am hoping the f&g mount is solid. I haven't seen a lot of other alternatives.
I have bought one, but I’ve kept my 1040. I sold my 1030 plus and it paid for most of the 1050. I haven’t used it yet but it’s screen set up and display is set up the way I want it to be. I should have done this with all of my previous devices
I am still tweaking my screen layout since moving from Wahoo. So many options on the 1050.
Sounds like you know exactly what you did wrong remember you can only race for so long so choose your moments to burn matches carefully as you only have so many
Very good way of looking at it. Thanks mate.
Hi, great video. I’m fronting for my first 3 Peaks this March. My next big birthday has a seven in front, so a finish will be a win. I’m trying to get an idea of the effort required, do you recall your average watts for the ride?
Thanks Rob and good on you. 173 average 208 normalised. I was about 78kg so 2.6wkg. Managing your stopping time is more important than big watts in this one. Work out a power you can sustain for the climbs and just hold it. Then get in a bunch for the flats. Only stop to fill water bottles. Eat everything.
Thanks, great advice.
Hot legs, cool heads win bike races. West Head is a tough races. The rollers are taxing and burning matches is something you need to do thoughtfully. The only time you want to be near the fromt is either if youre going to attack, it makes sense for YOU to respond to an attack or around the final set of cones in prep for the sprint.
This is a big part of race craft I am working on (both indoors and out), knowing when I should respond to an attack, or when I should let others, or trust that the bunch will bring it back.
@ModerateCyclist its a fun journey and helps once you know the regulsrs in your grade and their strengths and weaknesses. After a while, you'll watch guys go off the front and know if it's a risk or not. A lot (especially in lower grades have no clue and will do stupid stuff that just doesn't make any sense. Have you done any crit racing? Hart and Heffron are both good. beaumont rd to a much lesser extent. Have been racing on and off from about 17 (now 52). I did a Hart race in C grade last summer (had only been back on my bike for a couple of months after a decade off) and watched a really strong guy for the grade sit on the front for just about every lap for the first half of the race. He was first second or third wheel for the first 15 minutes. He was shot for the second half. I don't know what he was doing, but it wasn't bike racing ;)
No crits yet, but watch this space. I think it’s a pretty common pattern for new guys to lay down a lot of watts (like me) before they learn a more efficient tactic.
To the question, NO, really not even.
Haha, similar power profiles, and equally hard to get a break to stick 😜, otherwise you are totally right.
LOVE THE FOOTAGE AND THE METRIC OVERLAY. what softwear did you use for the overlay?
Thanks mate. Software is “Telemetry Overlay”, they have a free trial you can play with.
Well done for taking the plunge, and for finishing. DNFs are not uncommon in your first few races. To get results, do as little as possible for as long as possible. Save your afterburners for the end of the race when everyone else is feeling it... lol :)
Thanks mate. The last two laps were a struggle, but I refused to get dropped. Good advice. Definitely going to conserve more energy next time.
Coast To Toast. Great effort. Sub 10 min is the magic marker.
Yeah man, 10 is a tough barrier. 9 is my next goal.
Still the hardest, best bunch ride that Aus ever had, The Whittlesea Express! The train departed from 30 Howard St Reservoir, home of the Sansonetti brothers, so many came from all over to join the hardest Sunday training ride in Aus. The Hammonds would come over, Terry Stacey came from Warranambool, Phil the dill Anderson was a frequent guest, Gary Sutton came from NSW to join in. It was nothing to see 60+head out. of course by the top of Kinglake mountain, "The Mount", that had thinned considerably! Pussies would go down Beach Rd, those who were serious about training bought a ticket on The Express!
This is a really cool story. When was this?
How far away do you find the indoor FTP from the outdoor one?
My power is very similar indoors and out. 20m was 302 for this race, vs. 296 for something recent and similar on Zwift. I think if your numbers differ too wildly it’s one of two things. Either your not working hard enough outside, or your trainer is not calibrated correctly.
@ Now that I think about it, I believe the former is true. I find myself not working that hard particularly when I ride solo. But with a fast bunch, I always ride at the right intensity. Thanks man.
It is very easy to ride at a casual pace when riding solo. I noticed that about myself recently and have been making a point to replicate the constant power sensation from Zwift when I am riding on the road. It really improves your numbers.
@@ModerateCyclist I thought about this a bit more in my ride today. I believe there are two areas of struggle for me: 1) I am quite capable of producing and sustaining good power at elevated levels but can’t produce and maintain the same power on the flat or in descends. 2) I have not trained my neuromuscular capacity; thus, I do not have much explosive power to close the gaps. As such, I need to incorporate a lot of muscular low-rpm endurance and sweet spots, as well as sprints, to improve these areas.
To your first point. I was struggling here too. Structured training helps (either indoor or out) something that keeps you accountable for pushing harder than feels natural.
Yeah, your first 10km was a domestique work for others but great situation awareness, ideally in this kind of race, if you can maintain being 6-10th rider all the way would be perfect, never go to the front unless you are in a break away group.
If only I was with a team for this one. I think that is good advice, 6-10 seems about right.
Great Vid. Thanks. Your nunbers are so impressive! I'm new to these parts....what is the actual name of the main Strava segment on McCarrs?
Thanks mate. My power has come a long way this year, feeling strong. The segment is call “McCarrs Creek Rd”. I will add a link to the description.
Another entertaining video. I like your persona. Also, Since Covid I rarely do the office thing anymore…..😉
Thanks mate, I really appreciate the positive feedback on these videos. I can’t believe I used to go in 9-5 everyday. It’s a shame so many employers are force people back.
I loved doing Crit races here in Southern California. Health has sidelined me but still miss racing.
That is a bummer. Do you manage to get some Zwift in?
@ still ride just not at high levels.
Well done on another great vid ben. I was on that ride with but dropped whenever the watt bombs came down. Keep up the good work on the channel.
Thanks Howard. I think we had a chat on way down from Berkelo. When the boys kick, it's hard to hang on. Good riding with you.
Very cool. What sort of tech did you use to cobble all the stats together.Looks like you could make a clip just on that.
It's getting easier to overlay data onto video. Companies like DJI and Insta360 are building it directly into their cameras these days. I am using GoPro and need to utilise a third-party app called "Telemetry Overlay". It's fairly painless once you get your video / Garmin timecodes aligned.
To me it looked like you took way to much wind and responsibility the first 20 km
ah, your conclusion as well 😉
Yeah man you are 100% right. Trying to be too much of a hero. Lesson learned for next time.
New subscriber. Love the content 👍🏻
Awesome! Welcome and thanks for watching. Nice seeing people in the back catalogue.
what was your NP power? comparing to NP from Zwift ?
298 NP for this race. 306 for something similar on Zwift (shorter and less elevation but smaller bunch). But 356 NP for the first lap 😜
OMG,that is some powerfull output right there!
Thanks mate, riding on the shoulders of giants for this one.
wow....never mind how big the 1050 is....get a load of how long your arms and legs are 😅😅did Factor build you and massive bike to fit you and the garmin?.....just kidding. Another great vlog. Thanks
😂 I mean yes they are definitely longer than average. But I think there is a little bit of Fisheye assistance in this one. Thanks for watching mate.
Great camera placement and angles on the front and back of the bike.
Thanks Brett. Footage came out alright for this one. Need to tune the camera setup to be more race streamlined and able to capture the full duration.
I bet it’s nothing like 😂 riding indoors
There are more similarities than you think, but definitely very different.
@ you can say that again I enjoy going out running I’ll happily run 45 miles for fun on a Sunday but you mention the word treadmill I’ll run in the other direction don’t know what is but they are the work of the devil 😂
Riding indoors requires the right stimulus. I enjoy structured training and racing indoors because it is engaging and intense enough that you don't have time to think.
Horrible music choice
Savage 😜. All tracks or some? What would be better?
@ModerateCyclist The first one. That horrible British rap music. Yuck. As the video went on I realised the music selection were all free tracks you found somewhere 😅
@ Haha, ok, maybe not for everyone. I like it because she chants "Danger" leading into the verse. Felt fitting. You have to have a license for any music you use on YT. I use a service called Epidemic Sound. There is a link in the description if you want to check it out.
@@ModerateCyclist Yeah YT is pain if you play copyright music, so lame.
Get over it, Jfomo.
Reckon you need a minimum FTP of 5w/kg to be able to keep up with these guys.
4.0-4.5 is probably enough. You will get dropped on the all out efforts, but it’s plenty for hanging with the bunch. Similar to Cat A Zwift racing.
Attack zone 😂 wtf
Forced intervals 😜
Loved the McCarrs segement my favourite too. Yeah the MWCC guys are a rapid bunch. I couldn't keep up with them and went to the Cammeray Roadies instead much more social pace for us athletically challenged FOB's
Such a great segment. I have heard good things about the Cammeray crew. Thanks for watching.
