Review of the Wham Bam Flexible Build Plate System for resin printers.
I have had multiple resin printers over the years, but never tried using a flex plate on any of them. I can't believe I waited this long! These things are AMAZING!!! I will never run a resin printer without one ever again!

    Wow Yes it is possible to get a Flexible buildplate on my Saturn 4 Ultra. I just received my printer 2 days ago, and after the first print I was almost regretting my upgrade from my Mars. Especially because you can't submerge the Saturn Ultra 4 buildplate. I was so used to popping of the flexplate while buildplate was still mounted. No mess no hassle. Ps. It is slowly turning into a decent printer. Many people have reported having really good success converting the machine to use beacon instead of the load cell. The extruder on the other hand is still a bit of a mixed bag. Some people are getting extruders that work great, and others have one like mine which just doesn't work good at all. I know Peopoly has made a few changes to the entire tool head so it might be better now, but I don't have one of the new ones for testing yet. If you are ok with doing some tinkering, the printer does go on sale for $1599 quite often, so it might still be a viable option. I plan on making an update video eventually once I install my upgrade kit. Just haven't had time lately to mess with it

    The biggest weakness of this printer is definitely the load cell. The numbers that it reads can vary a lot when it's probing. I still get decent first layers and the prints stick, but I feel like it could be more consistent instead of varying between too close and a bit farther away. I think the second is that it uses some specialized parts. Like the load cell. Or the cabling. If the printer goes down, you need to get the replacements shipped instead of pulling spare parts from your other printers. They ship quickly, but it still takes time. I had two things fail on my printer and it took a week each for the replacement parts to arrive. I find it weird how I don't need pressure advance. Every time I try that test, I don't see a difference big enough to warrant setting this value. So it's been at zero ever since I got the printer. You do need to pay attention to the filament that you buy. The printer advertises amazing speeds, but I've found that if you don't use filaments designed for high speed printing and you try and push the limit, the filament starts blobbing like crazy once the printer goes overdrive and then the blobs start ripping the print. The y-axis has some nasty vfa on my printer. I plan to use the instructions on the peopoly wiki to tune it but I haven't tried it yet so I don't know how successfully I can remove the banding. That being said, I believe that the linear motors should be capable of this since I have no vfa on the x-axis. Overall it's a fun printer and it's my main one right now since I have some bigger prints to make and this printer has a larger build plate than my Voron.

  • @oleurgast730
    @oleurgast730 Месяц назад

    It is interesting all of the issues seem having nothing to do with the linear motors or it´s drivers. Imho Peopoly should have sold a XY gantry with drivers to replace the gantry a Voron 2.4 350, Trident 350 or/and Vcore 3.1 500 instead releasing a complete "beta" printer. It would have not only been cheaper, but also much more intersting for the still big group of tinkerers. You could combine you favorite bed, bed kinematic, printhead etc. For load cells: They have a massive temperature drift. I do not know how klipper handles it, but a few years ago I have seen a github project were a microcontroller sampled the load cell very often (about a thousend times a second) and constantly updated the middle value. The controller gave a signal on its output the moment the measured value deviated from this middle value for a certain percentage. A quite simple solution, if I remember correctly it was an ATiny chip. It´s quite good to use a seperate microcontroller for such real-time task instead using a multitasking OS. Sadly I do not find the github project at the moment. But I think the problem isn´t the loadcell itself, but the way the values delivered are interpreted.

    What complicated belt tensioning have you had to do on the Bambu? Curious, I have over 5000 hours on my x1c and have only had to tension belts once, and it was like 5 minutes to do so.

      Some people have had relatively good luck fixing the belt tension, but spend enough time in various forums and you will find that most people have a very difficult time with it. At present time - I am upset that I seem to be accounted as a "Beta Tester" when my unit wasn't a beta unit- but a mainstream sold unit. It's good I get similar support, replacement parts and the like - but it's horrible if you .. want to print and there is an issue, after all - spending hours disassembling and then replacing parts or reassembling screws, is timely and pretty frustrating. I wouldn't say it's horrible, but I also wouldn't call it good. It is solidly just "meh"... I can usually get 28 to 34mm/s of volumetric flow with the standard melt zone (which is way better than most other printers on the market), but it struggles to actually get the flow started. Peopoly is working on a new revision so I'm curious to see how well that one performs. On top of that there are multiple groups within the community that are working on custom solutions to replace the extrusion system on the Magneto X. I can't really give many details on either one just yet as I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to share, but what I can say is while these things usually take a bit of time, there are a lot of really smart and talented people working on it and they are actually making some pretty solid progress so far.

      If I remember correctly, they had originally started showing it off back in August 2023. It was supposed to have been released sometime in November or early December but they quickly realized that they had a lot more work to do than they had initially thought. That's why we really didn't hear much from them after September. I think the main problem just came down to Peopoly not having the required experience in FDM to produce something as complex as the Magneto X. The overall building blocks of a good printer are there, it just needs a lot of little tweaks to get everything working as it should. Given how complex the Magneto is, I think Peopoly did an overall decent job, but they really should have done more internal testing rather than dump that job on the pre-order customers. @makerscorner93 2 месяца назад

      Yes there are other options however SD card is a pain in the butt and means no remote starting of a print, LAN only mode as I had mentioned in the video is not as secure as most people think as Bambu Lab has been caught in the past still scrapping data from people using that option, and while FTP is an option, it is not one that many people are even aware of. I used to use FTP but found it to be slow and generally unstable. Don't get me wrong, I love my P1S but I will never blindly overlook obvious flaws just because I like a particular machine or company.

    • @AwwwSnapperz
      @AwwwSnapperz 2 месяца назад

      @@makerscorner93 I have to disagree. When the printer is in LAN only mode it does NOT leak/send out data. I have run checks both at the router level as well as wireshark. You can check it yourself. Heck if you are extra paranoid you can disable net access from any modern router at the client level. I dont blindly believe any company or any person who hasn't shown proof of their assertions, so I ran my own tests. Whether you are on a Vlan, normal router or one that is completely disconnected you can run Lan only mode. I frequently do it at local trade shows with a pocket router with no net access. There was a ytuber saying much of the things you mention and he was incorrect but he did it on a site that knew he was nowhere near an authority on the subject. and he could not answer let alone prove anything as network traffic can be at the very least monitored even if you cant view its contents. Even the crew behind x1+ who had access to far more of the inner workings confirmed what I already knew. You can run the printers without Net access, it does not send out data unless the user initiates it, and you dont need the cloud for it to work.

    That sucks you went through all those problems. Every printer I have purchased over many years went like that. Except for the X1C. But I did wait to get the X1C until after it had been out for a year. I don't think I'd ever be an early adopter on any 3D printer again. Too annoying. I just want to print. Thanks for sharing your experience. Maybe in a year, the Magneto will be "worked out" enough for me to get one. I do love the idea of what they are going for.

    • @makerscorner93
      @makerscorner93 2 месяца назад

      I normally don't like doing the whole early adopter thing, but I wanted a larger format printer, and couldn't resist the pre-order price. I feel sure within a year the Magneto X will be in a much better place. Considering Peopoly has never made an FDM printer before, the problems we have been having so far are a bit expected. Working on this printer has brought up old nightmares of dealing with my Tevo Tornado! Not a pleasant experience to be reliving!

    • @dudea3378
      @dudea3378 2 месяца назад

      Seriously, the X1C is the only FDM printer I've had that worked perfectly out of the box, and I also waited a year after release to buy it. I'm afraid that by the time the Magneto gets the kinks ironed out, a new large format printer with tool changer will be available. Hopefully Bambu's upcoming XL printer will have linear rails and a tool changer....

  • @russbarrow

    Seems like a lot of startup issues that can get cleaned up as orders increase. I think this printer belongs into the large format space somewhat justifying the price. I am curious who the manufacturer of the linear motors. I thought Peopoly mentioned the potential sale of these motors in the future. That would suggest that they are the manufacturer (which seems very unlikely). any ideas?

    • @makerscorner93
      @makerscorner93 2 месяца назад

      Some people had asked if they would consider selling just the motors. The response they all got was the very corporate "we will take your suggestion into advisement". Translation, probably not gonna happen.

    I was worried about this. I wish they had just released the linear motors in some common sizes and let the community have their way with them. Releasing a whole printer just risks tarnishing the whole system or killing the company because of simple mistakes. I dunno maybe that wouldn't have worked but this is less than ideal.

      You are correct, there wasn't much showing the actual machine. I've had this printer for a few months now and unfortunately don't have much footage of the printer actually working. For that matter, there isn't much footage from anyone of the printer working due to all the issues we have been having with it. Peopoly recently opened up sales to the general public and I just wanted to get some actual information out there for people to be able to make an informed decision if they decide to purchase a Magneto X. I have two more videos planned for the Magneto X in the coming weeks which will have much more footage of the actual printer.

    It is interesting my printer arrived in May and has be very reliable and robust. In an industrial setting sending data to a cloud isn't an option. It appears the washers were not on my load cell no clicking or under extruding. The only issue I have had is not being able to get abs to stick however my enclosure just shipped so hopefully that helps that issue. If peopoly did make changes and push them out that quickly it would be impressive.

    • @makerscorner93
      @makerscorner93 2 месяца назад

      Peopoly has actually been pretty good at making changes in a very quick manner. It would not surprise me if they did manage to make changes and push them out that quickly. I did not have any clicking from the extruder in the beginning. It happens over time from the vibrations causing the set screw to come loose. They may have already started adding thread lock to the set screws before your printer shipped out to you.

    Great review, I am actually looking at this printer as an option still to replace my X1C (I want a larger frame and not have to send my files over the other side of the world). However, I need reliability as even after a year 3D printing by myself, my tech skills only go as far as changing the nozzle/printhead.

      @@AwwwSnapperz I should have worded that better. It is true you aren't forced into using the cloud, but the majority of the people using those printers aren't aware of that. The overwhelming majority of people are very basic users who might not realize there are other ways to start a print. I will be more careful in my wording next time.

    Oh you're the one working on the cooling thing, I'm really looking forward to that because <redacted> that 48v power supply fan noise. A solid covering of the highs and lows so far. I've been good after replacing my load cell and toolhead board, but haven't printed a lot that isn't calibration prints since that. Hoping to do a bed mesh at my normal PLA bed temp and printing some other actual things this weekend. Once I've got that baseline I'll definitely be looking at some of the .cfg updates that folks have put together. Also will see how changing probe accuracy to .025 goes. It really seems a bit hit or miss with the QA on units that have gone out. As you said there's been plenty of people with issues, but some folks have been having a good time with theirs. Other than the possibly self-inflicted loadcell sensor probe issue I've been okay, fingers crossed that holds. I have my corner screws tight until the springs weren't springy any more, I'll keep your tension tip in mind if binding issues show up as I print taller things.

The .cfg video will most likely be coming out next Friday. Want to make a few more tweaks to mine before recording that video. QA on the Magneto X has been super hit or miss. I agree there are a few lucky ones that got printers with zero problems, but the majority of us were not as lucky. Heck I'm thankful that my problems are on the easy side of things! There are some people who have had to completely disassemble their printers multiple times already!
