Stop Ignoring This Part of Software Engineering

Writing proper requirements is often overlooked, but it is a crucial part of software development. By writing and analyzing software requirements we can catch bugs early, when the cost to fix a bug is low. Fixing bugs in the late parts of the development cycle can be very expensive and nerve wrecking. In this video I will teach you once and for all how to properly formulate software requirement...

I feel like this is the new wave of people in programing. The point of Github projects is not about getting hired. The value of posting projects publicly like that is different. Yeah, sure, some companies can be interested in checking it out, as if it is your portfolio. But that's a collateral effect. They interested in it not because that's where you ask them to hire you but because of its original value.

I was a software engineer for 10 years. There are good jobs in tech, and there are bad ones. There are A LOT of both. I do think software engineering is unique compared to a lot of office jobs in that it involves a lot of technical problem solving and research. If you enjoy problem solving every day and doing research on the job (even when the task at hand is nearly a death march), then you won't mind the job that much. Personally, it's not my cup of tea. Also, whether or not your management is bad is independent of whether you work in an office or remotely. The quality of the management determines how stressful the job is.

I've had several jobs before and I can't complain, sitting in the comfort of my home or anywhere else I choose, doing 8 hours of work at most (sometimes less thanks to meetings), on a fixed schedule, with great pay and benefits I'm sure there are absolutely shitty dev jobs out there that drive people mad and for good reasons, but it's not every dev job for sure

for the first point, i do not care about how computers work but i care alot about what they are capable of. i fell in love with the idea to automate things, no need to know how computers work, at least not to the insane degree you learn it ina university to do that. I did go to university and learned it, but my day to day job and my private projects don't use 90% of the knowlege I gained there. programming is about many things. I also fell in love with working from home, it saves me a ton of time and enables certain things, that were otherwise impossible. For example having my cat in my kap while I work. It's little things like that, that keep me motivated too

It's like the difference between math and literature class. To get good grade in math, you need to be good at math and get the answers correct. With literature the teacher has to like you and his opinion has to align with yours. Software Development looks like math, maybe in private projects it is, but once you get into the workforce it's rather the latter, like the literature class where you have a bad day when people don't fancy you appearance, rhetoric or don't align with your opinions. And then they freak out. "All this hard skills I needed to learn and now we crap on that with social games and irrational hypes and opinions and who likes who". In short: Office is mainly "human factor".

I think the issues ARE specific to software development. It is the combination of creative work and pushing us to fit into a rigid system that makes it really stressful. How do I know it? I became a penetration tester after 8 years of swdev, after the next 2 years I became a project manager. Software developers are exploited of their dreams, that's all. It is an awful perspective as most of good devs are dreamers.

Yes, you are totally on point. It is something different then working at coal mine - which in my country is not that bad, you can retire after 55, paychecks are actually bigger then SWE (subsidized by gov), and many other benefits. But coal mining is just a job, like the job I have around the house to clean my house, to mow the lawn etc. It is a physical labour, sometimes very tiring. But the mind is unaffected by it.

The industry sucks - Agile was a mistake, and we need to talk about it, thing what we do - Non-techies sucks have should be filtered more, we should have techie good with people in leadership position - A degree should be required tho, it was the status quo and it WAS working, we also need to talk about it Also you're missing one point, the current state in North America is due to the Section 174 of the TCJA change that begun in 2022 > required to capitalize and amortize R&E expenditures > no longer immediately deduct these costs in the year incurred > Domestic R&E Expenses: Must be amortized over a 5-year period > Foreign R&E Expenses: Must be amortized over a 15-year period > Amortization begins at the midpoint of the taxable year in which the expenditures are paid or incurred That change made it complicated and more expensive to recruit us. Trump pushed for that change in 2017, factually speaking. There is another factor, the economical one. Many companies have a loan on their commercial real estate and they can't afford to default which explain - return to the office trend - hiring freeze - dependent on interest rates We have multiple bubbles in the same time, that specific one is about 1,2T$ in the USA. We can talk about those things without complaining. People in leadership position will never be hold accountable for their bad leadership, a corporation is just a neo-feudal structure, go back to work wagie!

All totally correct and fair. There isn't really any other industry where you can teach yourself a skill and get good enough to interview and land a job making salaries as high as they can go in the tech sector. Like you said you can't watch RUclips or read a few books that cost £30 on Amazon to be a nurse, doctor, engineer, teacher, therapist, etc. They all takes years of training so even with free education those professions are *still* very "expensive" in terms of time. This isn't just limited to programming but most jobs in the IT sector; system admins, network admins, devops, even senior level IT support jobs can pay a damn good salary in many companies if you find a way to become a niche subject matter expert for something they heavily rely on. But like you said it's still an office job and some it comes with all the same baggage and office politics. I think why "IT people" find this difficult is because so many "IT people" be it programmers or sysadmins or devops or network engineers they are all a bit weak/poor/atypical on the social aspects. Many lack the soft skills that make life much easier to navigate the modern office and so they quickly get frustrated and that further compounds the "geek tech person" stereotype who always complains and often belittles their users (or lusers as I have heard way too many times over the past 20 years from IT people). The truth is IT jobs are *easy*. We get to work in a nice, mostly comfy office (depends how good your AC/heating is in the summer/winter), sitting at a usually decent desk with a decent chair. You don't have to physically stress yourself walking around like if you worked in a store or warehouse or restaurant, etc. We have it on easy mode for most things. When our biggest complaints are "we have too many meetings" you gotta ask yourself how bad do we *really* have it? The answer is an uncomfortable "ehh not very hard really". And even if you don't earn the mid-six-figure FANG (or whatever the current acronym is) salary chances are you do still earn higher than the median for what is a pretty easy job over all. Sure we have stressful days but who the hell doesn't?! Too many people in the IT world are fragile little drama queens with poor social skills and are too damn entitled to realise how easy we have it. Damn I need to rant there didn't I 😂 Thanks for the video, I needed to get all that out lol.
