Phantom Daggerboard and Shakedown EP 24
At the tail end of last fall we managed to get the Phantom on the water for a little bit of a shakedown sail. We learned a few things:
1) Greg can't remember general sailing terms when speaking (we already knew this.)
2) The landing we launched from is well protected by a generous bed of weeds.
3) The daggerboard STILL vibrates.
4) Stopper knots are a thing.

Making a Dinghy Boat Trailer from a Harbor Freight Utility Trailer Part-2
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.3 года назад
We finished off the boat trailer conversion by fabricating some support bunks, adding support at the front for the bow, and covering any contact points with fabric to protect the hull. Next up: sailing!
Installing Inspection Ports - TSS EP 22
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.3 года назад
We installed two inspection ports in the Phantom 14 (similar to a Sunfish) in the holes we cut earlier to see inside the hull. We used butyl tape to seal them, since we'll be taking them off eventually in order to repaint the boat.
Making a Dinghy Boat Trailer from a Harbor Freight Utility Trailer Part-1
Просмотров 24 тыс.3 года назад
Harbor Freight doesn't make a boat trailer anymore, but they DO make a small utility trailer that's perfect to modify into a trailer for a Phantom, Sunfish, Laser, or any other small dinghy. With a few pieces of steel from my local metal yard, and some scrap wood from the kid's swing set, I'm going to make a functional little trailer to get our Phantom to and from the water.

Repairing Phantom/Sunfish Sailboat Deck - Two Sons Sailing EP 19
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.3 года назад
With the deck/hull joint epoxied, we set about repairing an area where the lip of the deck was damaged. It largely required some TotalBoat fiberglass and epoxy, but eventually it will need additional fairing to bring the repair up the the same level as the rest of the hull. Rigging Compac-19 from Slip to Sailing - Two Sons Sailing Ep 18

It's been a summer with no wind, so I took the camera along to do some sailing in the slip. This is the process I go through to get the Com-Pac 19t ready to head out sailing. Sailboat Deck/Hull Joint Repair (Phantom/Sunfish) - Two Sons Sailing EP 17
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.4 года назад
We've made some huge progress on Max's Phantom sailboat (basically a sunfish clone.) After an eternity of scraping and picking silicone caulk out of the joint, we were finally able to adhere the two properly. We used a thickened 2-part epoxy that fits in a caulk gun called Thixo, which REALLY simplified the process. Check us out on Facebook for more frequent updates: TwoSonsSailing...
Removing an Outboard Engine in the Water - Two Sons Sailing EP 16
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.4 года назад
There's nothing worse than missing a day of sailing because of a bum engine. We had to pull the outboard off our Compac-19 sailboat because it was idling rough and would cut out. It was the first time we've removed the engine with the boat in the water, so we were all a little nervous about it. Luckily, the 4hp engine doesn't weigh much, and we were able to time it with high tide, so everything...
Galley Pump/Faucet Restoration - Two Sons Sailing EP 15

The Fynspray WS-60 galley pump/faucet in the Seward 24 was old and very tarnished. We stripped it down, and with progressively finer sandpaper and polishing compound brought it back to a brilliant shine. These old pumps are pretty much solid brass, so there's a lot to work with even if they look really rough.

    I just purchased a 1984 Compac 19 as my first sailboat and this was helpful. I haven't taken it out yet, it's on the trailer where I'm going to practice raising the mast and rigging. Just a suggestion, but when raising the sails, one should raise the main first, then the jib. When lowering, take down the jib first, then the main.

    • @twosonssailing
      @twosonssailing Год назад

      Best of luck, it's a fun project! Heads up that the HF trailers are powder coated, and pretty thin stock. Lots of grinding, and the new tongue that I used was thicker than the material I bolted it to. Not impossible to do, but it would come with its own annoyances.

    Hey sir, I just scored one fo these for 150$. I am VERY confused about the spars. Theres 1 black ring attacked to the two aluminum spars, it looks like it fits over the black spar that steps into the boat. Are there supposed to be more? If so, what are these things called?

    • @twosonssailing
      @twosonssailing Год назад

      Maybe we'll do a rigging video! The Phantom (like most Sunfish clones) is a lateen rig. The mast (single pole) goes into the boat with the halyard up and over the top. The spar with the ring on it is the lower of the two, with the ring around the mast. The halyard goes to about the middle of the upper spar, with the sail between the two.

    A good place to get graded bolts is at a farm supply store. I'm not sure what's in your area. They usually cary metric and standard bolts for tractors and farm equipment. Good call on beefing up the tong material. Those harbor freight trailers are cheap for a reason.

    I wish you learned welding... I am getting ready to make similar to this, welding would help in some parts of the build

    • @twosonssailing
      @twosonssailing Год назад

      It hasn't made any of the videos, but I can weld. The biggest reason I didn't weld this was because I started with a trailer that was powder coated. I would've had to strip off the powder coat and the finish never would have been as good as the original. The new tongue is also significantly thicker than the original frame, which would have been a pain to weld. If you weld a trailer, you really want to hot-dip galvanize it AFTER you finish welding, and I didn't want to mess with that.

      It's just a mild steel welded tube. I'll need to keep an eye on it for rust, but the rest of the trailer is just powder coated steel as well.

    Exactly what I was looking for. Our 5hp Tohatsu needs minor maintenance (impeller & lower unit oil change) but I'm not going to haul my Catalina 25 just to pull the outboard. Instead, I'll back into the slip as you have done, tie off a safety line and get a strong dock neighbor to help get it onto the dock. It's a little heavier than yours and my replacement 6hp that I'll put back on the boat is even heavier. Thought I might have to rent some kind of hoist, but I think this is doable. Thanks for posting the video!

    • @twosonssailing
      @twosonssailing 2 года назад

      The trick on mine was that the lower outer tube unscrews, but that wasn't evident just from looking at it. If it's REALLY stuck on there I'd try a strap wrench. It's thin walled, so I wouldn't try pliers or anything like that.

    Hi. Just curious, to what max speed have you taken this trailer? Some "sellers" of this trailer state 45mph max but it seems many people are going beyond that with no issues. I want one, but not if it has any issues on the freeway, up to 65mph. Thanks

    • @twosonssailing
      @twosonssailing 2 года назад

      I double checked, and it is true that Harbor Freight lists the max speed of the trailer as 45mph. I've had it on the highway without issues, and I suspect that making the tongue longer makes the trailer more stable when being towed. I wouldn't want to go cross country with it, but it seems ok. You might check the speed rating on the tires to see what they're rated for.
