Congratulations to Dr. Taylor and your staff along with the Human Jukebox. This along with a few years back becoming only the 2nd HBCU Marching Band in history to perform the Rose Parade for a 2nd time, performing 5 Superbowls, 4 Sugarbowls, the bowl game of two other colleges, and the Legendary Band Director Dr. Isaac Gregg's being honored in The AA Smithsonian Museum in Wash D.C. There's some serious history with this band program. I honored them. HBCU Pride!

I have watched war and thunder even their latest showcase. The movements they incorporate are kinda similar to east coast drumline. The best drumlines are cold steel and NSU.

Why is it the PWI bands have no competition. Is it because they are at football playoffs on TV? DCI finals draw 40,000 during the summer and that is the basis (DCI) of PWI marching band philosophy. Personally I went to JCSU undergrad and A&T in grad school was Allstate in high school in 1969 and arranged music for National R&B acts in the 80’s and did marching band arrangements for high schools and colleges in NC. Because of integration now after 50 years, really good black musicians are going to PWI schools like in NC,UNC-G has the best music program in NC.

FAMU, sir. Not only have they performed several times for the FMEA, but Drs. Foster AND Chipman have both served as FMEA President for multiple terms, including just last year. A quick RUclips search would give you several stellar FAMU performances…check them out!

TALK YO TALK!!! Band Directors answer a CALL TO SERVE!! We have to have the hard convos and put in the work to prepare our future music instructors and band directors. At the end of the day, our African American culture demands that we do a better job of educating our own. Marching Bands are just a bi-product of what your music program is...or should be.

Good show. I was in and out while on back-to-back meetings. So I went back to listen uninterrupted.

I was trumpet player in college.Staff arranger at NCA&TSU IN THE 70’s. This was a no win situation. Band director wasn’t prepared . He did not have options given the variables of going from parade to concert. The musical style of parade was not replaced with concert attitude. Repertoire was suspect. I listened to Ohio State Monday and the sound was incredible. I do think Valley , when they found out they were going to be inside should have conferred with the event audio engineer and got a plan to prepare a indoor formation and probably cut the size down. They had a day to plan and they were not prepared for their performance to be broadcasted.

Me and my #13 and #16 (Spring 85 Zeta Nu) had sons January 1996 with my son kicking it off on 1/11/1996. Me and #16 had our 2nd child (me a daughter and he another son that's in the NFL) about a month apart in 1999. 😎

I think context is important with the clip for this performance. I think they got hit with a hot shot gun mic on one person. Plus yes as a musician you need to know your performance space and how to pay attention to how the space will effect how you are gonna sound. Know when to push and when to use the fact that you have number so you dont have to.

The trumpet section has serious issues... one guy waz playing the wrong notes horrribly. I plsyed trumpet in high school..

It's up to us to push our concert ensembles just as hard our Marching Bands. Some of our schools have horrible concert settings. Small concert halls, poor acoustics, substandard concert equipment, etc.

That performance went exactly like I would have figured it was going to go with this particular program. But hey "exposure coins" right?

If I'm correct, those type of platforms are by invite once an audition has taken place. Multiple HBCU concert bands have been invited to Jan Fest at University of Georgia.

Yeah , I agree. This doesn’t deserve a blackballing, if that’s the case there’s other things more alarming or deserving of that conversation. When were the plans changed? Cause of it was changed super last min then I can understand what was negative from the performances, I still don’t agree but understand. I believe the event was change for reasons other then weather and also security but that’s just me.

Wasn’t just weather because the weather was worse in 1997 when southern , TSU, Famu went. Security was a big factor “allegedly”

I think the band director should have given direction to how they would perform once he found out that it would be inside. They are still students learning the process to performance. This falls on the band director.

Shame on these young adults for supporting this racist klan leader at his klan parade. They made the choice to perform. Each student could have stayed at the university and did some community service in honor of The great Dr MLK.

Morris Brown concert band performed at GMEA way back when. SCSU has performed for SCMEA, but i think it was small ensembles. My bigger issue is that our music departments don't go to our state conventions to showcase our majors or our other ensembles besides marching band.

I still wonder if anyone will care a year from now who was part of this. Was there anything that wasn't paid for by them?

You hit it right man I think it was a microphone issue on top of them playing loud inside and probably those instruments was cold as hell

I just don't see how a band director lets that touch a national stage without reigning in those trumpets. I know it can't be the first time Bonds heard them like that. Screaming for the sake of arrogance and sacrificing the sound of the group should've been worked out IN high school. Even the damn bagpipes sounded better and they physically cannot hit certain notes 😂 But I'm glad they made the trip, regardless. Hope the kids had an amazing time.

So, this is only for bands within the state? I've seen bands from other states perform for similar organizations. I'm not really sure why Southern or Grambling have not been in this one. Is it by invite only? Is there a bias against HBCUs? We don't see a lot of HBCUs promoting their non-marching ensembles, could this be why this could be the case? Maybe we need to start taking our stage bands to different open performances and events

Thanks for sharing this on your platform and sharing the significance of it on a grand scale. I was surprised to read this was the first time an HBCU performed at the LMEA. AEA 🤟 And to hear that you believe it is the first time any HBCU performed at any state Music Educators Association convention is even more surprising. I'd be curious to know why this hasn't been an interest for any of us, while also encouraging the current Director of Bands to enter their excellent symphonic and/or concert bands to perform in spaces like Music Educator Conventions.

To your point though, I personally don't believe many of our programs either have not registered to perform or may not have been invited to do so. I know that the larger programs may get invited to perform depending g on the state. Some directors might not register to perform for other reasons tied to the "One Trick Pony" theory. Thank God for social media though. Also, I'm anxious to see the fall out or lack there of, after the upcoming National BOTB event at the Kennedy Center.
