Varroa Mite fogging treatment, new formula, better coverage, kill and control varroa
Просмотров 29 тыс.3 года назад
This new Varroa Mite fogger formula is so much better than the old Vodka and mineral oil mix that I came up with. This new formula is a true Varroa fogger not just a mist. 7 pumps (4 on the bottom 3 on top) of the Burgess Fogger there will be 1 Tbsp. of fluid and in that Tbsp of fog juice there is 4 grams of dissolved O.A. You can always increase the O.A. amount to make it a stronger solution b...

Did you ever added thymol to the mix? Any experience with less glycerin? Great recipe, really transforming my way of treating bees. Thanks for sharing!
I only use O.A, I never add anything else. Less glycerin means less fogging effect inside the hive. Glad to help....
Oh boy do I have a major update on this process. Someone had bought some Dish Gel that they would use in their dish washing machine and didn't care for it for whatever reason. I read the label, and it said that it "Dissolves tough food particles.". The label also says NOT to mix with bleach. So, I loaded up a tote with about 80 sheets of old plastic foundation and dumped a couple of cups along with hot water and let soak for 3 weeks. !! WOW !! When I triple rinsed the batch, most of the debris was released and in solution. I then soaked in bleach solution for a week. Guess what? No pressure washer required. They easily sprayed clean as a whistle with a Turbo Jet nozzle. Which begs the question,; what is the strongest soak solution? Obviously, a scouring agent is a big improvement. Maybe lye soap?
I'm using the Black Flag version of the Burgess. For whatever reason I was getting nothing like the amount of vapor shown here. I switched to MAPP gas and am getting a fog quite like seen in this video. Hope this helps somebody.
Thanks for the tip!
Wow Bro you are working way to hard at beekeeping! Just make some beetle grease and put it on top of the end bars every time you see a beetle! This easy trick will make every beetle and mite leave the hive! The bees will eat it and move it all over the hive and no nasty critters will want to stay in the hive! Let's keep beekeeping easy and fun to do!😁
It's been two years. Are you still sold on this method?
This past Spring was zero varroa in the capped drone brood. Yes, I'm staying with this method.
This video has been up for two years now and I was wondering if you are still using this method and if you continue to have posative results. Would adding Thyme Oil help ior improve results?
Yes, I still use it and yes I have very positive results, last late Spring inspection there was no Varroa in the Drone cells. No, I wouldn't add anything else.
@@jeffwillard2417 Thank you
I like your setup and I can see some very solid, physics based advantages but, you never point out the reasons the copper pipe setup in the up-down-up-down configuration is not as good as yours. Please explain. Thank you.
Well let's see; fewer valves, gravity self-draining to one location, compact design, quicker to make and that's just a few.
Thank you for sharing!
You're welcome, I hope it works as good for your as it did me.
Can I substitute Mineral oil for vegetable glycerin?
No, it's not the same.

You're welcome!
I have tried the recipe a few times but am not getting the fogging that you do. Let the fogger heat up way longer than u did in the video. Could it be the glycerin not being high enough quality? Any tips?
Unscrew the tip and clean the hole by using a piece of wire, I use a tool with multi-sized cleaners for carburetor jets. If the tip hole gets a little plugged it will make a difference. I believe all food glycerin is the same. good luck.
Jeff it’s nice to see your video again. Been missing them….we will be extracting our honey in four weeks… I could watch them work all day. Just love my bees! Moe
Sounds great!
Hello, does this work for stableflys aswell?
The one time we did this the bees fought and killed each other. Does that not usually happen?
This is great! It helped me make a decision to buy a plastic foundation instead of a wax foundation! Thank you!
Tanglefoot spray. Nice. I've used the tub style that looks like honey-butter. I once had a bad problem with gnat-like pests. I noticed they liked to land on string or skinny sticks like skewers or similar form. I applied some tanglefoot with a popsicle stick onto a wire to hang near the garbage. At the end of the day the wire was covered. The tanglefoot is super sticky. I use Isopropyl to remove it from the fingers if needed.
Good stuff
Just finished processing 2,200 pounds of honey from 88 boxes---used the electric bread knife for all of it. Keep a back up in case of overheating or breakdown. Will add the foot pedal next season as my hand got tired on the trigger.
Ronald, you really put my idea and the knife to an extreme endurance test, I'm glad it worked out so well for you, 88 boxes you got to be honey sticky and tired.... Where are you located?
@@jeffwillard2417 Pulled boxes on Tues, Wed, Thurs with really good help. Extracted on Friday and Saturday---with more good help. I use 7 frames in 8 frame boxes (I'm 5'6" and 150 and 65 y.o.). The bees cleaned up boxes and wet cappings on Monday and Tuesday. Gathered dry cappings and treated and stored frames yesterday. Cleaned and stored supers early this morning. I try to keep the sticky mess to a minimum---but can't do much about the heat---which along with humidity, has been oppressive. Now I make up overwinter nucs with the dark comb that was in some supers. I'm in Richmond, VA.
If you were so inclined, you could make an “X rated” deer fly catcher - if you know what I mean…….. great. Thanks.

Teaspoons, cups, Fahrenheit! Apart from that, great video and really interesting insights into the use of glycerin. I havent seen a fogger like that over here in UK. I use a battery driven model that uses a plug of oxalic powder per hive.
Glad you enjoyed it!
hello Jeff, I'm very excited to try your anti-mite formula. I have a quick question, do you have to use a thermal fogger? if you you prepare your solution and wait until is not so hot for the bees and use for example a regular atomizer, would this work? Thank you so much for your help.
Hi Maria, This video is an update on a new and improved fogging formula and method, it will answer your questions. ruclips.net/video/pzSS9XXYWU4/видео.html
Excellent! Going to pick up an affordable one here (unfortunately not popular enough to be likely to bump into them at a thrift store).
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great to see a new video from you! Capping cleanings. Your comments are turned off.
Thanks Mike for letting me, it's turned on now.
Awesome thanks
Your welcome....
How long do you "fog" them for do you use the entire jar for 1 hive?
Hi Jason, This video is now outdated there is a new formula with much better fog coverage, this is the one I always use. Here's the link; ruclips.net/video/pzSS9XXYWU4/видео.html&lc=UgzNN2pvH9E0uYnaar54AaABAg
if you use the burgess fogger you will need to use a medium sized mason jar to hold the liquid. If you try to use the container that comes with the fogger it won't work. Because the liquid in the container will not be deep enough to reach the bottom of the intake valve on the fogger.
You are correct, that's why I use a pint glass jar. It is on the fogger in the video.
jeff could you tell me the exact flex lines you used at inlet from compressor & why not use same 1 at outlet?
Sorry this one slipped pass me. I used 3/4" single braid hydraulic line, with a 3/4" pipe thread swivel on one end and a fixed fitting one the other.
They make 180 degree copper fittings to save a little time on the soldering.
Great idea !! Thank you for your video ….
Glad you liked it!
When I die I want to go quietly in my sleep like my grandpa did. Not KICKING AND SCREAMING like the passengers in his car.

Brilliant!
Thanks, but watch the newest video on my channel the fogging formula is even better!!!
Simple to the point good job, thanks for posting.
You're welcome!
Are you still using this technique with success? Looking for a new way to treat mites other than just the oxalic acid cause I have a couple log hives that just have little holes in them for entrances and my vaporizer won’t fit in the hole but my fogger would I usually just treat with mineral oil but this would be much better
A big yes I'm still using it, my bee inspector was here a couple of weeks ago and went through my hives, we talked afterwards and said that he popped out a bunch of drone cells and did not find one Varroa mite inside, so yes this may the best treatment for Varroa. It's very effective, easy to apply and the equipment is inexpensive, I'll never switch to anything else.
Sounds good enough to me how often do you treat?
@@KentuckyCoyoteoutdoors Once a week for 4 weeks. Try to start before August (peak Varroa population) and again in the fall before it gets cold.

I have used double the bleach and dawn, soaked for weeks and it did not work, nothing worked but the pressure washer
The Clorox is just a disinfectant, I've mentioned it several times to reduce it to 1/4 to 1/2 cup per tub. The Dawn Dish detergent and not some copy of Dawn always worked to soften the cell cups to pop right out with the pressure washed. The video proved it, I don't know what else to say..
Great idea and great results! How long did you let them soak?
I let mine soak for two weeks to really soften the wax. I also started to only use 1/4 - 1/3 cup of Clorox to kill any virus or bacteria that may be on the foundation.
Thanks for the reply!
Your Welcome
Is your video on the simple ant-proof hive stand still on RUclips? I couldn't find it. Thx.
Yes it is, ruclips.net/video/FeKmeV0NzMc/видео.html
Thanks for the video. Did you have to put something between the foundation to allow the solution to get to the mess on the plastic?
No just keep them loose fitting in the tub.
I tried boiling water, mine don't have any recycle marks to be sure of the polymer I took a guess that they would be made out of polypropylene because of the hardness and flexibility and PP is standard for things that need to be durable, chemically inert, and sanitized with hot water, but they softened and shriveled in less than a minute (Both for a full plastic frame and a foundation from a wood frame). So they certainly are not PP [maybe wax would have a hard time sticking to PP?] I might try a few modifications on the detergent recipe, I have the supplies and reasonable chemistry knowledge. My pressure washer is in storage right now so if I can get it to spray off with a garden hose nozzle, or just to loosen in a day rather than a couple weeks then I'll try to remember to update this. Temperature can make also a big difference in some chemical reactions, generalized they say 10c/20f doubles or halves a reaction rate. With fats, being just below verses just above the melting point can be an order of magnitude difference, which is why soap is made with melted fat.
How long does the coating last before you have to recoat?
I've made more update and design change videos on this. The spacer designed worked the best, you may have to recoat every 1-2 years.
Spot on my man 👍🏻
Glad you think so!
is the use of Clorox/Dawn safe to use with honey foundation?
It would be ok, just reduce the Clorox to 1/4 or 1/2 cup, air dry and rewax with a 4" X 3/8" nap paint roller.
Would be great if you made a drawing to show what you’ve done .
You'll need to watch all the videos to see how this design has changed.
Jeff thanks for the video. Next time please type up or show the containers of the ingredients big enough so I can read the labels? I saw Mineral oil and Skol Vodka containers were they used in the mixture? Thank You.
The video tells how much of each ingredient is used for this new mixture. The alcohol and mineral oil are not used in this mixture, they are there for demonstration of the older formula.
I've been using your method for 3 or so years now. Works very well, thank you!
Rob, you are most welcome, I'm glad it was a help to you.
