That happened to me last year. After I cleaned up the hive and set it up in anticipation for some bees I ordered a swarm moved in. May have been the bees that moved out.

That was good luck with the swarm, there is nothing better than getting "free bees". I have had hives in the past get one or two Wax Moths but nothing like the hundreds in that one, hopefully never again...

What was the time laps from when you checked the hive to when you found it this way?

It was quick, about 2-1/2 to 3 wks. after I pulled the suppers off. I just overlooked the reduced activity at the entrance before the hive absconded. These days everybody needs to keep a close eye on their hives population and signs of trouble.

A question about the never wet, can bees walk on it, i dont have bees or comb in my hives but i put syrup feeders out and am already seeing hive beetles.

No crawling insect can walk on the Neverwet surface. You don't have any bees or comb and your getting hive beetles to a feeder, you had better be prepared for a onslaught of hive beetles when you do get your honey bees. You probably have a neighbor who has hives that are breeding the hive beetles your seeing. Good luck, you are in for a hive beetle war......

Jeff Willard thats the thing there are no hives near me, i think they followed the bees, which is how i found your videos. I then proceeded to fix them. My hives were n the garage and it was shut and i found a dead beetle on the outer cover in the morning. Do shbs mark a target, either with some chemical or pheromones to attract mates.

A hive beetle can crawl through 1/8" hardware cloth, so once the beetle smells the scent of the bee hive there not much you can do to stop them from getting to your hive. Once inside the hive the beetles will emit pheromones to attract other hive beetles, plus they sense that the hive is weakened with little defense. I have read that some beekeepers use hive beetle bait trap stations on the perimeter of the Apiary as a first line of defense. I have caught swarms in my traps that were filled with hive beetles and others had just a few or none. This will be an on going battle with hive beetles that will never stop.

Jay you are probably right but they almost explode when you poke them, I'm going to stick with good old fashion worms.....

This is how you explain to people why your honey is so expensive.

You are so correct.... With the cost of bees, hives, frames, foundation, tools, extracting equipment and labor its a wonder honey isn't $15.00 an pound. With all the cheap imported honey and its dubious ingredients plus the big food processing companies are willing to buy it to increase their profit margin, that makes for a tough honey market for the U.S. beekeepers to compete in.
