  • I saw this Reynolds Wrap non-stick foil and thought it might be something to use against the small hive beetles. I dug the Small Hive Beetle theater out of storage to do a quick test for both you and I to watch, do I need to tell you who wins. Only Neverwet can stop the Small Hive Beetles they can walk and crawl over everything else.... Please subscribe and like my channel it helps a lot.

Your welcome Michiwood, I am inching ever closer with each test to the perfect anti SHB combination because I hate these SHB as much as everyone else.

      Hi Scott,
Thanks, every test that I preform gives beekeepers a little more information about these pests, plus what results they can expect from products that are already on the market. I hope your bees are doing well...

Jeff, a quick question. As I recall, your design calls for three strips of flashing on the sides and back of the bottom board and one strip to complete the encirclement on the front lower edge of the brood chamber. Why not put all 4 strips on the bottom of the brood box, or build up the sides, back of the bottom board a 1/4 or 1/2 inch or so and add a full width strip of wood the front of the bottom board to staple the 4th strip across the top of the front? I have gathered all the supplies including the stainless staples. When I build out my beetle trap, it may become apparent why you designed the three strips and one. I am toying with putting a mason jar with #8 hardware cloth in the lid, and drilling a hole in the middle of the bottom board hoping the bees will "herd" the small hive beetles into the jar that I will fill with mineral oil to drown the little bastards. Thanks for your continued work in this area!

      Hello Chip,
Use the updated version of the Beetle Barrier using the 3/4" wood rim with the 1/8" hardware cloth ramps, this proved to be the best design, that video is also posted.
Using the Neverwet Beetle Barriers with screened bottom boards and an oil trap tray like the Freeman is the ultimate SHB prevention. Mason jars with oil will add some small degree of killing SHB but nothing like an oil tray can do. Good luck..

      Hi Carole,
Your welcome and the different materials a SHB can walk on is a real eye opener. It doesn't matter what type of a barrier that is used in a bee hive if its not coated with Neverwet or some other hydrophobic material the SHB can crawl right over it.

That's what I said also, Neverwet is the only material that stops them.
