The Kitchen Part 2
Work on the Kitchen continues. The house in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily is coming along with other projects running alongside this one. Our aim is to have the essentials sorted. Roof & Ceilings are done (kind of), Electric is on (kind of), Water is on (kind of) so that leaves the Kitchen, Toilets, Boilers for hot water, Securing the Windows and Doors that are falling out and then a laundry are. The biggest projects after that will be a Power Wall and Solar system.

Work progressing on our new house in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, Italy. For those that are here for the first time, we've sold up and relocated from the UK and purchased a house / ruin in Sicily that hasn't been lived in for 30 years. The roof is leaking, no electrics or water and very overgrown. It's a DIY project in progress and we are trying to do everything ourselves rather than rely on local...

Back under the UK clouds. Our home in the UK is now all packed up, well mostly. Barbara and the girls have just flown back to Sicily ahead of my departure. The race is now on to pack what is left, leave a bit for me to live off of when I return in a few weeks for the second load of our belongings. Drive from the UK to Sicily and return for a second trip. Maybe a third. My good friend Garry has ...
Short Summary

Well we are coming to the end of the Summer in the Kasbah, Mazara del Vallo, Trapani, Sicily, Italy. It’s been a mix of holiday and working on the house that we purchased in April. I have a good understanding of what needs doing and its a fair amount. This trip has been about cleaning and inspecting the damage. Now it’s time to crunch the numbers to see if I can resign from work and if we can m...

Time is short as we hope to move to Sicily towards the end of the year. Our family have purchased a ruin, lo...

Unboxing a few of the essentials that I'm going to need to work on the house over the next few months. We've purchased a ruin in the Kasbah. A very old part of the city within Mazara del Vallo Sicily. The house has been sitting empty for 25-30 years and is in a bad state, but we are not letting that get us down. It's a fixer upper as they say. Most of the work will be DIY and we plan on filming...

    I don't know how it works in the UK, but in Italy the electrical and thermo-hydraulic systems must be installed and certified by a professional technician, you shouldn't do it alone, on a bureaucratic level you could run into serious trouble

    Can you use a concrete blade on you circular saw and cut a channel both sides and then just jackhammer the middle to create your channel? I prefer to have my sink in front of the window, giving me a view for the amount of time I spend in front of it but with these old houses and retro fits, sometimes compromises need to be made. I must say that method of old wiring gives me worries, but I guess stone doesn’t burn.

    Those are stick built in place cabinets made out of real solid wood. Good quality. Shallow? Yes. I have similar cabinets in my kitchen. I find the shallow upper cabinets to be very convenient as things don’t get hidden in the back and forgotten. It also makes it easier to grab them. They go all the way up to the ceiling so yes, I keep a folding footstool in the kitchen. I understand your reasons for replacing them. I just hope you don’t regret it years down the road. Unfortunately with stick built in place there is no removing to use elsewhere. I see your counters are very low. The wife of the previous owner of my house was 6 ft (183 cm) tall so my counters are higher than average, but I have learned to live with them. I’m building a center island on wheels with a butcher block top for my comfort. Rather than modernize my kitchen I worked with the existing cabinets and tile, tiled the floor and added a vintage stove and microwave hood. I installed a small dishwasher, but lost a cabinet storage space. That is why I’m adding an island on wheels. There is a shallow cabinet right next to the stove that is the perfect size for spice jars. The more I live in my house (1922) the more I understand some of the design decisions. I love the orange tree i. The garden. You can have fresh orange juice every day. You can prune it to make the oranges easier to pick. Really looking forward to when you have the time to get back to the garden.

      It was such a great idea to move. We are now several months in and the kids picked up Italian in about three months whilst at school. They are 7 and 9 and have absolutely love the lifestyle. School here is from 8am to 2pm with lots of home work. I still only speak a few works of Italian but am getting there. I could have chosen to work through to retirement for another 20 years or sell up and move and semi retire now. Def made the right choice.....

Was amazing watching the coastguard and sister ships pull up alongside - guess they sent an SOS. Fire was contained in the end and we managed to limp into a close port (Naples) on the second engine.

    • @MovingtoSicily-xh9yz
      @MovingtoSicily-xh9yz 12 дней назад

      I'm planning on putting something together to explain the process we followed. The best option and one we took was to involve a UK based Italian lawyer who handled everything for us. In essence, apply for residency within 8 days of arrival at local police station and fill out a ton of paperwork. Easiest options for you would probably be a long stay Visa, then after 5 years you transfer it to a permanent residency. Or look at the digital nomad (some regions only charge 2-5% income tax fixed for ten years).

  • @kenhunt5153
    @kenhunt5153 Месяц назад

    A digital nomad visa may be worth looking into. You need to show proof of income from it ~ €28,000/yr. Maybe your adult kids could be your ticket there? Working under the table in Italy is fround upon if someone reports you. The short term rental idea is better.
