Rockhounding Help Arrives! Unravelling The Mystery Of Agate And Rock Formation
Rockhounding with special friends, Jared and Sarah from @CurrentlyRockhounding, we examine and elicit their help in understanding how the chalcedony and agate and other rocks on the claim site formed. Agate formation and rock chemistry is a complex subject. Although we do not have all the answers in this video, we made progress towards understanding the vast geologic and rock variety on this single mountain. This is a very special video for me and Shadow as we have watched Currently Rockhounding for years and have always considered it our favorite Rockhounding channel. Mine, because it is a wealth of rockhound knowledge. Shadow, because Jared and Sarah also have a wonderful dog that is of...

When I started along that long path of astronomy image processing on both the Stargazers lounge & the Cloudy Nights forum I sometimes got offended because the critiscm was sometimes so scathing it made me quite mad & I did get upset. Over a period of time I came to realise that people were being brutally kind to help me improve my processing eventhough it felt they were rubbing me with sand paper, so harsh the critique which was sometimes given. The images you have presented in this video need a lot of work- they lack detail & colour balance. Those two aspects alone would improve the final presented images immeasurably. There is no green in astronomy images- if you see green your colour balance is wrong. There are tools in most processing packages that will help you with this. There are more advanced tools that will improve star shapes & detail that can be deconvolved in images. Time would be well spent seeking out the Adam Block tutorials to help you with the basics then build from there. I'm no expert in processing but I have got better with time. It is better to present one average image than 10 that frankly look pretty awful as brutal as that may sound and before anybody criticises me for writing this you can see smaples of my work here- some images are bad, some better and others quite nice- it is a progression over a period of time. See samples here www.astrobin.com/users/Pyrasanth/ I wish you good luck on your learning curve.

I am ashamed to admit I have not watched one of your videos in quite awhile, for that I do apologize. I liked one of your early videos, do not remember which one now but in reading the comments I saw Jared's. I am also a follower of his channel, have been for a time now. In that early video I had been reading the comments and I saw Jared's, thought he was rather rough on you! He was right though, a little on the sharp side but that is Jared. He is a reader, a lover of books and generally knows his rocks. It really surprised me to see this video, in a good way. I am happy to see this as I like both channels. I need to get caught up on both channels too, especially your astrophotography. Astronomy was an early love of mine. Good video, thank you.

Hi John! Great question. I tumble and polish a lot of the samples. Somehow they end up in the pockets of visiting friends and family members, which makes me happy. I also display the larger, more unique pieces within my home here and there. And the big rocks are displayed or incorporated into the landscape around the house. I also give a lot of rocks away to others who want to tumble them, etc. Have you explored tumbling? It’s a fun hobby. I watched a RUclips video a year ago or so made by a British fellow who gathered rocks on the beaches and tumbled them. I don’t recall where exactly the beach was, but the rock tumbled and polished beautifully. Thanks for watching. Love your channel! Cheers!

It really was a very special day. I live in St. George, UT. The site we were at is just about a 30 minute drive North. On the day we shot this video, I was shooting with a new DJI Osmo 4 and DJI mic that comes with it. I’ve since shot another video with it and had the mic properly paired and I’m super happy with both so far. Previously I was using a GoPro Hero 10 which I also liked a lot. But the new DJI Osmo 4 has a much bigger sensor and is far better in low light. I shoot a lot in low light as I do astrophotography too. The GoPro, which is super in so many ways, is not good in low light. I think I’m rambling beyond your original question, but I hope this helps. Do you ever get this way?

Love the scenery, reminds me of the Nev/Utah border. Did it turn out to be agate, chalcedony or somethingaltogetherdifferent?

Definitely chalcedony and in the agate category. Jared’s video is posting Sept 5 and we will all learn more then.

sometimes scientists have to choose their work or research subjects based on what will grants be sponsored for versus what they're actually interested in, hence geologists working for oil companies instead of investigating how cool minerals form.

Thanks Charles. Identifying rocks is really hard sometimes. And sometimes they are a bunch of different things making it a real puzzle. I do my best but admittedly I don’t get it right all the time. But sometimes we do! Lol
