How Social Media is Ruining Our Shame and Guilt Emotions
Просмотров 9211 месяцев назад
Jake Wiskerchen explains why social media is ruining our shame and guilt emotions. Historically, shame and guilt existed to appease our tribe when we did something wrong. This was needed when our tribe was a handful of people or maybe even a hundred people. Social media tricks us into believing that we need to appease the needs of a digital tribe of thousands. This is simply unattainable and ne...

    This was very helpful and exactly what I was missing. I’ve been doing some self healing and diving deep into my belief system. I always wondered why disgust was part of the basic emotions because I had a limited understanding. Thanks for clarifying

    The content of this video is clear and understandable for a regular person like me. Would like to have you do a podcast style with another speaker, that way you don’t have to carry the whole thing by yourself. Thanks for making the video, this one and the “disgust and contempt” video helped me understand things better than I did before, I appreciate it.

    I am one of those young adults with toxic, shame, but it wasn’t forced on me from the outside, I did it to myself. I was diagnosed with autism at the age of 16, so before that, no one knew why I was having strange behaviors. People acted like my feelings were wrong, and sometimes didn’t even believe me when I told her I was feeling a certain way. This gave me a huge complex where I convinced myself that I was a horrible person so the way that I felt about things, not just autistic. Now that I know the cause, it should be over, but I still feel like I’m not a good person. it doesn’t help the people repeatedly tell me over and over again on the Internet that I’m sorry about grammar, I’m blind and using speech to text. horrible.

    Amazing insight. Personally, I hold tight to my beliefs without showing contempts to others. I believe that each person, personal opinions and believes are a small part of the bigger picture, therefore, they cannot contradict, only add up to the truth. sorry about grammar, I’m blind. Don’t you dare try to label me!

    I really love your Emotional-functioning series. It helps me see that negative emotions are not annoying experiences we need to get rid of, but are actually carriers of specific information for our own benefit. We're always busy with "getting rid of" instead of being thankful for our emotions and listening to the information they are trying to share with us. Big thanks & 2 questions: Can sadness also be described as the emotion of "not having" or "Lack"? And Can inauthentic behaviour lead to sadness since you do not honor your actual wants/needs/desires and thus, in some kind of way, lose connection to yourself? Thanks again for the vid, truly helpful :)!

    • @jakewiskerchen9536
      @jakewiskerchen9536 4 месяца назад

      Thanks for the comment! Yes, I think you're right on both counts. Pulling the lens back a bit regarding the "lack" or "not having" can point to unconscious expectations that remain unfulfilled. It's why I am a big believer in self-awareness and trying to identify blind spots, as well as introjections (a Jungian term for unquestioned beliefs/assumptions), as often as possible. This puts us in better control of our behaviors so that we get our needs met more often. Regarding the second part, I absolutely think that if we continue to walk away from our True Selves - as in, the way God made us to walk the earth and do what we're called to do - then the more psychiatric distress we will encounter. This is another Jungian concept, wherein the more disturbed we are, the more our psyche (soul/Self/essence) is prompting us to take a look within and strive for better alignment. At the core, emotions help guide us to that end. Related: because sadness is defined as unmet expectations and shame is defined as failing to meet someone else's expectations, I do think that self-shame is an experience of failing to achieve one's own goals/dreams/desires/expectations. However, we are wise to be honest with ourselves in evaluating whether those are truly our own, or merely introjected beliefs from someone else, such as parents, culture, religion, etc. It's an ongoing journey...

    this was SO interesting! Will need to rewatch a few times to really soak it in. I'm one of those young adults consumed with 'toxic shame' as they say, (diagnosed with AvPD, I'm an adult child, unemployed, feel disgusted by the idea of other people having to know I exist, etc etc) but all the "stop feeling shame" stuff never rung true even though I can identify it as my problem. This is because exactly what you point out - the emotion is not like an appendix to be removed. It's important. I see examples all around of people who should be ashamed of the ways they make others feel, but aren't (at least not consciously) , and they would probably be happier, more positive people if they weren't so high on thier pride. The uncomfortable truth is that some parts of my shame is reasonable and appropriate, and the idea that I have to dismiss that in order to progress seems off; Too all-or-nothing. I don't like feeling pressured to see things as more positive or negative than they are, I to want to be able handle things as they are. People on this subject do always add the disclaimer 'well some shame is good' but it's pithy and dismissive, so it's a releif to hear someone talk about that without brushing it off. It quells that "but what about -" flag up in my head. It makes a lot more sense to examine shame with an eye on what it's for in positive terms, as a drive for reconciliation, rather than just seeing it as this all-encompassing negative pressure to be escaped.

    How do you find your unconcious??

    • @jakewiskerchen9536
      @jakewiskerchen9536 2 года назад

      Because there's no real "arrival" point, the discovery of one's own unconscious is ongoing. One way to find blind spots though is to notice how you react emotionally when something is pointed out to you. For instance, if you find yourself getting reflexively defensive at an idea (reflexively, meaning you don't know why but you definitely feel anger or fear), that's probably an area of your unconscious that needs examination. Practicing self-awareness of this kind can help bring more insight and less reactionary responses when beliefs are challenged. Great question!

    After watching dozens of interviews that Holocaust survivors have given I have come to appreciate the value of gratitude. Anything I have in my life I am truly grateful for. Even for the small, insignificant things like having a clean towel to dry myself with or soap to wash my hands with or clean and sanitary water to wash in and drink or dishes to eat off or even the ability to wash dirty dishes because at least it shows I had dishes to eat off in the first place.

    Most of the time people are talking about what something appears to be or "seems like" or "seems to be"when they say, " I feel like...". It is a lazy habit that people have gotten into such as "uptalking". They may say "I feel like...." because they have lost some of their vocabulary.
