My family have been manufacturing, designing and selling stoves for generations. I started my own stove company at 21 and enjoyed a lot of success with it, until my wife got ill and I sold my company to care for her and our 3 children. I handed my company to my brothers and father and I now make videos about all things stove related and a few other projects just to keep you entertained. I've no idea whether what I make is of any use or interest to anyone, but I've always wanted to do it. I love making things and stoves are in the blood!
I'm very lucky to have a family with a good reputation in this industry, and I have a wealth of knowledge and experienced built up over generations, which enabled me to help thousands of people get the best product for them. My reviews are independent and as unbiased as I can make them.
Also check out my other channels, which are all about wisdom, success and making things:

Thanks!

This is a fairly silly video, where I attempted to get Amy's feedback on our new product: TheTortoise Stove SackTrucks. Needless to say it didn't go well, and me and Amy ended up laughing through, what really has become a slightly strange obsession of mine! HNY to you. Must take a look at Woodwarm before replacement baffles and bricks bankrupt me on my HH 8KW Multi 🤤
Hi what are the exact differences of the bignut 5 and peanut 8?
Literally 2 small bricks on the sides of the firebox. That is literally it.
@TheTortoise thanks for the reply. So how can they say one is 5kw and the other is 8kw if its literally just 2 bricks. Would the 8kw still be the better option in this case for an open plan downstairs in an old stone house?
I agree that outputs are being manipulated. Overall I think the better buy is the 5, as it’s literally the same stove with 2 bricks (that you can remove), it costs the same and you don’t have to have an air vent fitted (as long as the bricks are fitted 😅).
@@TheTortoise I know it's a little bit more expensive but would the parkray aspect 8 be a better choice?
New to these, and doing research for a cylindrical wood burner stove for our extenstion going up this spring, ready for next winter. Which would you recommend for an easy to control, easy to keen clean black focal point wood stove please? This Woodford Carlton, the Archers Vulcan L or the over the top Scan 67? Or are there any others to look at please?
@15:24 "Innovation/Creativity" = Common sense 😊
My upper fire brick cracked into three pieces so I bonded them together with fire cement. A year later and they're still fine.
Still can't beat a open fire 🔥🔥
Getting a log burner installed in a few weeks and was wondering what wood species would be best in general to use and give the best heat etc. Is Ash a good choice or better to have a mix?
Ash is a great place to start.
@@TheTortoiseI have some Ash already so that would work well. I have a good amount of silver birch and some cherry and sycamore with some other species. Would a mix of those be best or just Ash?
A mix is great. Silver Birch is spectacular, because the bark can be used as a firelighter too. I’d definitely be stripping the bark, as you won’t need kindling or firelighters!
@@TheTortoiseYes Ive heard a mix is good. Not a bad idea stripping the bark as can use it for kindling etc and firelighters.
He may not like 'governments' telling him what to do, but unfortunately 'regulating' is usually the result of cowboy builders and charlatans not caring about the safety of others. Unless you watch this or similar video's about chimney science, then people are vulnerable to cowboy builders. When it comes to safety, then regulation is essential, if you came into my home to quote a stove installation, then you said 'i don't like government telling me how to do things safely', then I would look elswhere. Great video by the way
Sadly, they know nothing about woodstoves
the ash cleaner is a beautiful thought out piece of kit and works
Merry Christmas Tortoise and missis Tortoise and children aww bless is that small baby going to be a stove fitter ? Out of interest , I have seen these ECO stoves , that have all the heat insulation properties built into them …… give off heat for 12 hours and maybe burn again in the evening for the next days heat ? It says that they also have kits to heat water , however in my case I was wondering if the claims they suggest ( 12 hours heat after the fire goes out ? Interesting have a happy new year and keep the videos coming 👍
Can you review the Esse 105? There are absolutely 0 reviews of it anywhere
Masonry heater?
Do you prefer clay firebricks or vermiculite fire bricks? Any differences other than cost
Vermiculite has some advantages, but if your stove has clay bricks as standard, then I would like the longevity of them.
@TheTortoise some are broken and wanted to replace them. Wasn't sure if one was better than the other for the cost. Seems like Clay is Lil more money
If the stove is made with vermiculite then I would definitely stick with vermiculite. It’s certainly the more efficient material.
Happy Christmas to the three of you. Is that an aluminium can in the fire? Interesting to see the draw pulling the flame of the candle towards the fire. There are few channels that I see an new video notification and make time to sit down with a brew and watch. This is one of them.
And to you! Thanks a lot.
As an Army cadet in the 70s coke tins were steel or a heavier metal than aluminium , we used to sit round the fire and put our drinks cans when empty on the fire . In our tents we would dig a hole and retrieve the cans at the end of the night to put in the hole , cover it back over and it was like central heating 😃 happy days
That’s awesome! I once heard that this can prevent soot build up in a chimney, so because there was a lot of argument around it, I thought I’d test it over time. Sadly, so far I’ve noticed nothing of any note.
Gabriel, will you please review the termatec tt20. This is now the third year I'm running this stove and when I say run it I mean pushed probably more than most people in the UK ever would. This stove has been used virtually all day , every day for the past 3 winters. Yes in my 3 bedroom semi detached house I am able to 99% of the time , heat my home using wood only. Have a great Christmas & new year 😊
That sounds awesome. I will definitely give them a bell in 2025!
@TheTortoise thankyou Gabriel, I'm by no means saying it's the best stove on the market but what that little stove has done for me is certainly worth recognition 🙈😂 I must say though, after running the stove for 2 years with no external air feed and this winter it has the direct air kit fitted, I will never have another stove without this fitted , it completely changes the stove. All the best for the new year!!
Are you all mad! Not getting your point over .
Merry Christmas from the CZ....love your stuff, keep it coming and Good Luck with 2025!
Thanks, you too!
Happy Christmas to you and yours
🎉👍
Baby tortoise is so cute. Merry Christmas.🎄
Thank you! You too!
I've enjoyed your videos all year Gabriel. Merry Christmas and happy new year to you and the family.
Same to you!
Happy Christmas and congrats on the little one. So glad Woodwarm won stove of the year. As you know I have the discontinued Fireview 4.5kw, a stove built for life virtually. 13 years constant use heating my narrowboat home. Most parts lasted 10 years like firebricks, rope. Only replacements are stove door ropes, Firebricks, inner glass as crazed. Grate bars themselves good but link bar needs replacing to get riddling grate working. baffle plate slightly warped in bottom middle but still functional and incredibly thick. All in all if ever I sold my boat would buy another Woodwarm in a heartbeat. A purchase for life virtually. All parts all available and delivered within a week of ordering.
Wishing you a very happy Christmas 🎄🎅🏼😊
And a Happy New Year!
Have a great Xmas with your family, love your channel.
Could not agree more I have tried many stoves but I always come back to the firebug in my own house, the only challenger to this award is the new Archer stove that should be your next review
Right on, I’m looking forward to it!
Merry Christmas!
love your passion!
Happy Christmas 🎄 💓 💖
Merry Christmas to you and your family 🥃
Hi, great channel, thanks for taking the time. You obviously review top end stoves which would stand frequent/ heavy use. I’m looking to install a log stove in an external office/ workshop space. Have you any plans to review budget stoves and flues that would be used infrequently and purchased on a budget?
Great suggestion! I definitely want to cover every area, so no doubt it’ll come!
Usually I'll gauge how warm/cool the room/space is at the time of having no flame(s) present. If I feel like I'm in need of more warmth then I'll pop on a log and go from there. If, however, the space is way too hot then I usually leave the coals/bed to simmer down longer and will reload a little while afterward. Saying that, I literally had to do a full relight only 5 minutes ago due to me not keeping a proper eye on my stove. Mind you it was easy enough due to the sheer amount of heat still present within the stove itself, so it was much easier than having to do the usual 'cold start' in a morning. I love your videos!
The Dunsley Yorkshire boiler stove is better at 80% efficiency and 😂is defra approved. The DY is a downdraft combustion design so you can stoke it up with wood without increasing emissions. .
I don’t think Dunsley have made a boiler stove for 4 years?
Sod that I will stick to my dovre 250 far easier and less swearing 😂.
Yea this one is a hell of a bugger to pull apart 😅
I have a woodford lowery 5x, great stove, what temp is the maxium you would let it get?? on my flue thermometer the highest I've gone is about 260 c
260°C is nice and hot. There shouldn’t be any reason to exceed this, you’ll generally find stoves just become greedy if they’re reading this sort of temp on the flue.
Hi mate have you ever experienced a tiny bubble in the stove glass? No damage will it weaken the glass anything to worry about?
I may have, but I can’t remember it ever occurring. I’ve certainly never heard of this as a catastrophic issue, so hopefully it’s fairly minor/just an aesthetic issue.
Thanx for the info. Currently looking to have a log burner installed. Was wondering if I could burn peat in a wood burner with a 316 liner
Peat is better suited to 316 because it can get very hot. Do go careful with peat, as it’s a common cause for warped grate bars etc.
Yes without a liner you will get smoke coming through the worn mortar between bricks on old houses smoking the room out.😢 so yes fit a liner in old houses.modern houses usually have a pipe liner anyway so should be ok.
I saw today that brick in my stove is broked and it have a vertical crack. And I was wory about it and I go to find something about it. I found yours video and I see that it isn't so big problem as I tought. Stove is one year old, and this is the second season we're warming up to it. Thank you 🤗👍.
A awful (awful) stove. Avoid avoid avoid. Very tricky and if not absolutely perfect conditions you’ll have more smoke in your room than the chimney. It’s utterly pathetic compared to my Chinese import that I had for 18 years that was excellent. More poorly made British rubbish. Total waste of 1.3k. Not that any of this is the you tubers fault!
Very helpful - thanks for the video.
Beautiful. Does this stove come with the faceplate?
What do you mean by the “faceplate”?
@TheTortoise Meaning the metal frame that goes around the fire box.
These stoves don’t really have trim plates. The stove itself creates covering plate over a 16x22” fireplace.
@TheTortoise I'm confused. Where did the metal frame you placed around it come from, custom?
Oh I see. That’s a piece of slate. I have several cut to different sizes, so I can fit different inset stoves to the fireplace. Generally you would properly build it in, but I’m cheating a bit.
Inspired by your video I just replaced my faulty rope seal. But now I can't close the door which seems to be sitting just a little bit higher so the door catch doesn't fall within the cut away at the side which allows it to turn! My burner instruction books says there may be a misalignment after resealing etc and advises tapping the hinges! Help!
Sounds like you’ve got a Villager with welded hinges? The design of those was to adjust them by literally hitting them with a mallet. However the main latch does also have some adjustment.
Hi There.. I bought your kit.. great quality.. I'm just wondering the silicone black glue you supplied only takes 30 minutes to set... ??.. reason I ask is I thought I had read somewhere to leave the 48 hours before using it.. what would you recommend?.. cheers.. Rob
I’ve tested just leaving it for an hour with no issue, but some will wait overnight to be on the safe side.
Ive been watching a few of your videos, and you seem to say they are all marvelous... Im looking for a multi fuel 5kw..just however burning wood....what would you be putting in your home ???
Different stoves have different purposes. Like cars, most stoves are good and have their place, but their place does vary. First have a think about: What’s your main fuel? Whether it will be used just for the evening or more seriously? What styles you like. Once you’ve got some answers to that, then it becomes much easier to find the right stove.
Very useful video. Answered several questions I had as I was getting ready to install.
gas is 1.8m min for c/o alarms so expect its the same c/o rises so you want it high up
We have one and our gas bill is £8 per month amazing and British made wonderful tank you so much 🐬🐬🐬
Excellent Video, Much appreciated...
We have the bigger Clock Blithfield 5 & absolutely love it. It’s a fab stove indeed. Love your channel Tortoise
