Good for you to illuminate that a customer may get several very different quotes for the same job, different fitters interpretating regulations versus circumstance differently. Always useful to get multiple views if at all possible. And your video flags up why not to be surprised if different solutions and prices are proposed. Many may think there is a right and a wrong way to install, as there is with, say, wiring a plug. Your video helpfully explains why safe stove installation involves many factors. Well done.
As a long serving firefighter ive seen some dodgy jobs mainly by diy and general builders. The mdf resin clad gas hearth used for an open fire probably the worst. The fire ended up in the cellar below. Would debate whether some hetas fitters are up to scratch but to a complete novice entertaining doing their own fit please take advice.
Hi Gabriel and your lady wife behind the camera, great video as usual, so much to take in its a mine field. I dont yet have a wood burner, ive never owned one but im buying a new build bungalow and having a full glass room pergola fitted so there are air bricks running under the property front, back and sides, the pergola room will be 6mtr wide x 3.5mtr deep, im hoping to install a wood burner in the outer LH corner of the glass room (furthest from the property), quuestion 1, do i need to follow building regs as its not part of the house ? The ground is concrete slabs so far and glass walls and roof, the roof will have a metal plate installed for me to feed rhe flue through. Is there anything i need to follow ie flue height or more distance from laminated glass ? Sorry its a hugh question but thanks for reading
If the pergola required planning permission then it is subject to Document J. If it was just put up in the garden and didn’t come under the application then it is exempt (a bit like a caravan etc).
Hi , Gabriel, I am installing my wood stove myself, Building Control will be coming to inspect the installation, it is a Heat 45 Inspire, the instructions show 300mm from the front of the door to the edge of the harth but the regs state 225mm for a closed door wood stove , Can I go for the 225mm or do I have to go by the instructions that say 300mm ? Could building control refuse to pass it if I go for the 225mm ? Thanks Gabriel PS what does the Heat 55 state in the instructions? As it is a higher kw and a wider door . Thanks
The building inspector decides, so they can require whatever they choose (pretty much). Typically (if asked) these inspectors will always err on the side of caution and suggest whichever is the larger distance, but if not asked, I’ve known them pass all sorts of things. Having said this, don’t forget (as the installer) you also have a duty of care and responsibility, so the decision also lies with you.

Still got the paper sat on the stove 👌 let us know if it ever ignites.
Not yet, but it did go brown when I got it a bit hotter. 😬
I am supplying vermiculite board from China, very glad to get knowledge on stoves from your videos.
Glad to help!

I installed my hearth on the top of my hard wood floor but I have met the minimum thickness requirement. And my fitter didn't complain. Am I good?
Your fitter is in charge, and presumably nothing has burned.
So you must be “good” 😆
Hestia = Goddess of the hearth from Greek Mythology , Just telling you something you probably already know ,
I had connected fire, but I didn’t realise “hearth” was the correct term. Thanks
I always thought she was goddess of fire 🔥 😆
