I've got to admit my Castmaster (I've never heard of them either) 8kw is really easy to either have defra or not. Its a simple lever, you pull it down to allow full range of movement. It's under the fire so a long screwdriver or similar is required. It's much better without it.
Hi Gabriel, I don't live in a Smoke Controlled Zone and my heat 5kw 45 inspire has a 5 inch flue , can I remove the Defra control ? Or would I have to have a bigger flue ? Thanks , one more question, if I had a 150mm would it be better than the 125mm or is the 125mm flue the optimum for that stove . Thanks Gabriel, great videos
6” flues are always the best thing, but not always possible (depending on how big and bendy your chimney is). Legally you require a 6” flue to remove DEFRA.
And that small amount of opening with defra fitted is enough to stop a fire lasting all night is incredible. Does all fuel burn quicker in defra stoves because of more airflow? Some say eco design the fuel can last longer but how? Can you only remove the restrictor on certain models?
Stoves with the DEFRA kit fitted will always burn faster, than without, because they’re allowing more air through. The argument comes in when you consider whether burning at a hotter rate means that you transfer more heat into the room. Of course the person running overnight isn’t usually bothered about top efficiency, they tend to be focused on the convenience and comfort of the stove being lit in the morning and residual heat still spilling around the house.
