Where abouts do you send your reels for repair/service?
Hi, I don't actually know yet. My friend Tony at Murthly has a contact I'm going to get from him. Thanks for watching 👍
Another great video! I'm actually fishing Waulkmill (Goldcastle) on Friday and wondered if you had any tips for someone who's never fished there before (or fished the Tay for that matter) and who's relatively new to salmon fishing!? I've struggled to get hold of the ghillie Harry to ask for advice on flies, setup, etc. I was just planning on taking my 14ft rod (biggest I've got) and hoping that my solid wading skills will allow me to cover water with a floating line and 5ft intermediate or hover tip. Any suggestions on fly size and is it a good idea to also take a spinning rod to cover some of the deeper bits? Thanks in advance for your help!
Hi there, thanks for watching. Absolutely it's best to take a spinning rod as you'll be able to cover aome of the slower parts of the beat which are well worth fishing. Your rod and line set up is bang on and I would say a size 10 or even 12 fly, not too heavily dressed, cascade, park shrimp type fly and also some small black ones like executioners, munro killers etc. Hope that helps. Good luck 👍
@@scottishoutdoorlife thanks so much!
Your welcome. 👍
Thanks for another excellent video Ian. Pity you lost that grilles but as you well know that’s how it goes..at least when you hook a fish you know your fly is the right one and your fishing properly. Always next time, well done though
Thanks Andrew, yes the right fly choice that night. If only we hooked something everyone we went out. Wouldn't be so much fun of suppose. 👍
well done , loved the shot of other angler, he had the silhouette of the lough TAY monster....
🤣 yes he got pretty wet I think. He's a nice guy it was a shame. Cut his night short. Thanks for watching 👍
Hey, how come casting upstream? I usually do straight across or a bit down.
Cast upstream and wind back quick. Very effective on the Tay and permitted. I would check as its not allowed on some smaller rivers as there is a higher chance of foul hooking one.
Thanks for watching 👍
You’re welcome!
Some flow in that river !
There is in that bit, worth the wade though. Thanks again for watching 👍
Why don't you use a Ambassador Multiplying reel? Use one in the 1960' & caught three salmon in five days on a Devon minnow!!
You can't cast as far with it. Perfect for the Devon or a floating Devon, trolling, worm etc but not as good as a fixed spool for distance. Well done on your catch, I'd love to have fished back then. Thanks for watching 👍
Enjoyed that 😊😊😊
Thanks 👍
Just hooking one makes it worthwhile do you use a sink tip at this time of year.
Hi James. Yes I use 5ft of slow sink tip and sometimes change to intermediate in the lower water. Thanks again for watching 👍
Another great wee video thanks and unlucky with the Grilse! Seem to be fish around at least!
Hi thanks, yes there's a few about this year. This will be the first fish from the higher returns in 2020. Hopefully it kick starts something 🙏
Im looking forward to fishing Waulkmill on Wednesday, looks like there are plenty fish about just now. Doesnt look like you need to go down too deep to get to them, maybe 10 foot intermediate tip?
Hi, I would say even a 5ft intermediate tip now. There's a few fish starting to hold up in the beat which is nice to see. Thanks for watching 👍
@@scottishoutdoorlife thanks 👍.
Lots of water good to see we got none with a weeklong heatwave on the way with no rain of any amount forecasted.Shame ya lost it but ya had one so that counts in my books,,,
Thanks Billy, we could do with keeping this water low another week or two to let numbers build up at the bottom end. I had the best of it certainly. 👍
Another great video, shame you had another one get away. I don't like going that far out in a boat never mind wading 😂 thanks for sharing 👌
Thanks for watching again Chris. Just used to it I suppose. Doesn't feel that far out. Yeah another one away, that's grilse for you though. Lose more than you land unfortunately with grilse. Tight lines 👍
If you hold your rod tip high you will avoid a lot of drag and get the fly a bit deeper ,if thats what you want
Hi thanks for that. I was trying to show how you can get the fly to move or how it reacts to rod position. Thanks for watching 👍
What G of toby were you using mate? 2 stunning fish👏🎣
Thanks Andy. 28g Abu toby. They sit higher in the water when reeled in quick. 👍
@@scottishoutdoorlife thanks mate i'm on the Tay tomorrow🤞🎣
Whereabouts? Good luck 👍
@@scottishoutdoorlife thanks mate, i'm out on Dalmarnock hoping to snag my first salmon on the fly😂
Good luck
Dont think i would be casting under they power lines
Been fishing there since I was 10. They're a lot higher than they look. 👍 thanks for watching
River irvine last year saw one caught none
It's definitely harder work atm but there's still some fish to be caught. Hopefully you get one or two this season 🙏
@@scottishoutdoorlife I might do, I've bought a permit for the ayr instead lol. Also doing days on the esks and dee
You'll bump into one or two for sure then. Good luck for the rest of the season 👍
Whats the dressing for your orange fly seems to be working for you?
Hi John, not named it yet so probably do a video of it showing the tying of it. Can't honestly remember it all off hand I'll need check the exact names of the material. Two seasons ago it accounted for about 50 fish between myself and a friend. Thanks again for watching 👍
Good stuff, unlucky Grilse can be tricky like young upstarts lol
They certainly can. Lots of head shaking and soft mouths 🤣
Shame those two never stuck for you. I finally managed to get one to stick this year. A bit bitter sweet though as it took the fly too deep so it couldn't be returned. On rhe bright side though my wife was delighted and I'm allowed to go fishing a bit more. Video of that one will be out in a few weeks.
Thanks Toby, well done on getting one to the bank. Unfortunately some just don't go back, at least your wife was happy. 👍
@scottishoutdoorlife first one off the club water this year. That's me had the first sea trout off the inverurie association and now the first salmon off the Beauly club water.
Well done, perseverance pays off. Your flys got to be in the water.
Why were you casting up the river have the rules changed
Hi, not sure what rule your referring to, in Scotland this is a very effective way to fish for salmon and there have never been any rules to say you can't. Thanks for watching 👍
lovely fish
Thanks
Hi can you recommend a spinning real and rod please thanks.
Hi I use a Daiwa Whisker 10ft spinning rod, I would definitely have another. Thanks for watching 👍
A fun grilse you bys are doing good lots of water an a few fish on the go we got no water some of our rivers are closed with no water in the forecast.
Hopefully you get some water soon Billy. A few fush around here but could do with a few more. Thanks again for watching 👍
No luck but lucky man getting asked on for a couple of hours.
Thanks James. Yeah very fortunate to be asked down. Out next week for a day so hopefully get inenor two. Thanks again for watching.
Hi what Rod and line do you normal use
Hi thanks for watching. I normally use a 15ft Loomis NRX and a Rio Long Head Spey Floater. 👍
Unlucky Iain, grilse can be so frustrating
They certainly can. I find I lose more than land but they're good fun none the less. Thanks for watching again 👍
Lovely fish but since so rare I personally think knackering them and putting them back is dead wrong. I have put my salmon rods away for good, for me it’s only trout now.
Thanks for watching. I respect your decision. I personally don't think many end up dead, or we would see them in the rivers, especially on the smaller ones.
@@scottishoutdoorlife one of the Ghillies on the Tay told me that since they introduced catch and release they have had a high number of baggots, but that can be countered by playing a fish hard and putting it back after it expends all its energy.
I would disagree with that. When fish were plentiful there was always lots of baggots long before catch and release. I think they recovered quickly, sometimes fish are caught twice or three times over a period of time and fight the same each time. If they didn't have any energy left they wouldn't fight at all. Everyone has theories but the truth is we just don't know so much about them.
Where was your net??? Nowadays we must be very gentle with these Salmon, not to stress them or put them onto the rocks, pebbles, as they damage them! So please bro no more of this. and more of landing them with a net, please!😢
Thanks for watching. I carry a net where it's awkward to land them. I don't carry one normally as much of my wading is in deep and fast flowing water and cause me to go off balance if the current catches it. I always keep them in the water and am careful with them, sometimes if they touch rocks then for a few seconds then I don't think in the grand scheme of things it's so bad. 👍
My man strikes again...well done mint fish, mint video...oh you need a new spinning reel😂😂😂
Thanks Adam. I certainly do. Thanks for watching again 👍
That reel sounds like a corncrake with a soar throat but it did well with the 18pounder well done.
It does, it's really annoying.. thanks for watching 👍
What a stunning fish, well done! Great to see it released safely on its way! I always find it interesting that there invariably seems to be a correlation between overhead cables and lying fish! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, yes it must be the electrical field or something.
Great video again. Good to see a few fish about. Heading upto Cargill for a couple of days in a couple of weeks time so hopefully the run continues.
You should do ok there. Thanks for watching 👍
Cracking fish!! The joy of salmon fishing, you never know when your in the right place at the right time!!
Thanks, definitely
What a belter well done. Certainly time for a new reel that one is sounding like a corn crake 😂😂. Tight lines for the next trip.
🤣 new reel purchased, I'll sort out tomorrow
@scottishoutdoorlife good stuff. Still catching more salmon than me this season with a reel that's making noises 🤣.
Yeah thanks toby, already got a new replacement for Roan and hopefully another few on the bank soon 👍
Looks magic 👍 👌 🏴
It was a cracker and 👍
That is a proper fish there ar one ar to more fish this year will done u will catch bigger one next time 😂
Thanks Sandy, definitely agree there's a few more around this year. Thanks for watching 👍
Another nice fish Ian,your certainly getting a nice total Please buy a new reel😂
Thanks Stuart one or two now on the books, double figures I think. Roan has a new one I've been using just now, it's a dream compared to the old one. Having a think which one I'll get.
Nice fish great water...
Thanks for watching again Billy. It certainly was a cracker 👍
Nice one Iain , my Shimano made the same noise I put some grease in the gearbox it seems to be ok now.
Thanks so much, I'll just need to figure out how to get into the gearbox now 🤣
Cracking fish and she fought you all the way! Lovely to see such respect and admiration for your quarry and understanding of your beat.
Thanks Colin she was a cracker. A proper fish. Fished the beat for around 30 years since I was 10. It's like a second home. 👍
@@scottishoutdoorlife 30 years? You look older than 40! Wish I was still as young as that...
43 Colin, was very lucky to help out down there during summer holidays.
@@scottishoutdoorlife Some of the opportunities that we had don't seem to be around anymore. Such as you helping on the river or me shooting crows for the farmer which led to me being allowed to flight ducks on his ground. We don't seem to see or hear much of things like that now as everything has a price.
Well done a cracker,I watch all your videos fantastic,🎣
Love the way you give the fish plenty of time to recover….to many people just unhook and let it off
Totally agree. They gave us the pleasure of catching them, the least we can do is make sure they get away OK. Thanks for watching 👍
That was a very short fight but as the mouth was locked it's no wonder. quite big fish for there so a good catch indeed:)
Hi, yes also explains the fact it went crazy. They often do that when the mouths are locked shut. Thanks for watching 👍
Love to watch your videos over breakfast mate 👍 I live in Luncarty and would appreciate if you could tell me who to get in contact with regarding Permission on permits. For the stretch now Luncarty. Thanks
Hi thanks for watching. The stretch just above and below the pipe is on Fishpal as Luncarty beat. The ghillie is Bob White. Fishes well from this bank 3ft or higher on the Ballathie sepa gauge. Fishes well in low water from the stormontfield side below the willow tree especially. Hope this helps 👍
That's great thank you. And do you have a seasonal permit? As I see your down there quite a lot
I fish Walkmill beat a lot, not Luncarty. I'm lucky I know a lot of the guests and they invite me down.
Makes up for all those blank days .its why we keep going back .
Exactly David, hopefully this recent run of fuah continues 👍
I meant spanker
Thought that🤣
Congratulations Iain what a spanner of a fish. Quite a few rivers up this way seem to be picking up, long may it continue. Thanks for another excellent vidio
Thanks, yes the rivers seem to be picking up a bit now. Long may it continue, tight lines 👍
This is great news, what a fish. Congratulations mate…. Great show of fish. May long it continue 🙏🏻
Thanks again for watching, yeah it's been a decent year so far. Hopefully one of two more to be had yet. 👍
What a Lunker!! 😅😅👏👏but your spinning reel is in it's death throes, or it needs a lot of TLC. I've had Bass and Redfin take lures as long as themselves! 😳
Hi thanks for watching, it was a cracker. I bought my son a new one and I'm using it just now, I'm taking my time buying myself one. Doing some research.
