Not 100% Highland/Not 100% Lowland: Frontier Clans
The more I study the Scottish clans, the less I find things fitting into the tidy boxes I had previously arranged. The Frontier Clans don't fit well as Highland or Lowland clans. This is a topic that deserves a lot more scholarly attention. Which clans would you consider to be those of the frontier?

I dabbled a bit in the history of my paternal ancestors. Seems we were a border clan, and reivers as well. As lairds to the valley of Mickledale, that somehow ended, and, along with Elliots, Douglas', and other clans, were unceremoniously kicked out. The head of our Clan Little, David, died leaving no son, and the clan died. There was in the last few years, applications successfully for a clan society. Now we have our coat of arms back, and strangely, a tartan, which is kind of different for a border clan.

My grandmother's ancestors were MacGregors (MacNee). They were employed by the Laird McNabb, based in Killin. Family connection was broken when the family settled in McNab township, Ontario, ca 1825. Highland clearances. They were tough and resilient people. They spoke Gaelic in the home. The MacNees worked in forestry, laying out roads and harvesting the white pine. Some of them ended up in the Oregon area, working in the big trees of the temperate rain forest. Like what covered the highlands two thousand years ago.

Could Ulster be considered a part of the frontier? My Fleming ancestors were a part of the plantation as early as 1612, having crossed the 12 mile stretch from Argyllshire. Musterrolls from 1630 make a point to include what men were armed with.

I was out Hiking by Tyndrum last month, got talking to local shepherds, who told me the area was a melting pot of local magnate clans, MacDonald, MacGregors, Clann Donnachaidh (Duncan / Robertson) and Campbells from Glenlyon. There is a pass near to Beinn Achaladair which was a cross roads of access to Glencoe, Glen Lyon and over to Rannoch which was heavily fought over. I'm from Clann Donnachaidh. Much of it was about raiding.

Not exactly on the frontier though, they all spoke Gaelic in the early 1800s didn't they? My grandmother's people came from there about 1825, settled the McNabb township in the Ottawa Valley. Archibald McNabb was from Killin, east of Tyndrum. They all spoke Gaelic.

@@StuckInPeg exactly, and Gaelic was spoken all over Scotland at one point, there are even more Gaelic place names in Angus or Fife or Aberdeenshire for example than there are in Lewis. The borders was the real frontier. I also have family from Strathorchy, but also from Rannoch. I live near Aberdeen, but going to Canada this year, Vancouver. I am an American descendant of Simon Frazier who came to America in th1800"s. During the Jacobite war and after wards we were known as the fighting Fraizers and known as fierce fighters. A little history of their exploits in North America, I thought you might enjoy my ancestor Simon Frazier (a different Simon from the one in your story yet a descendant of his) on May28th of 1808 mapped out part of western Cananda and America (at the time they didn't have a border set dividing these two countries yet). thus, there is a river and valley named for the Frazier's. Some had children with the Native Tribes there and bought their sons home to their families in upper New York and Virgina. Interestingly some of us are of mixed race. The Lummi Natives are still in that area and live on the west coast of Washington state and southwest Canada. I had the joy of meeting my Native American Ancestors when I lived in Bellingham Washington. In the archives of the Bellingham library is a great deal of information on Simon Frazier.
